Tiger kills girl at Chinese zoo
A six-year-old girl has been killed by a tiger at a zoo in Kunming in south-western China's Yunnan province.

The girl was posing for photographs with the tiger when it was startled by camera flashes and pulled the girl's head into its mouth, state media said.

Staff beat the tiger until it released the girl, but she had suffered a crushed skull and died in hospital.

The zoo has stopped allowing visitors to pose with its tigers for a charge of $2 (£1), Xinhua news agency said.

..little more at link...

5. Seconded.
I couldn't help but to make a joke (I have no taboos :( ) but in all seriousness, this is a tragic event.

I wonder if the tiger will be tested for rabies...

7. Anyone get the feeling that wild animals are getting more pissed at us humans?
Yesterday I learned that chimps are starting to use spears (not Britney) to hunt prey. How soon until they figure out those spears will work on humans too? Damn dirty apes!

Animals are evolving. No doubt about it.

So they can be on an even playing field with the hunters, for once.

We tried to get our city council to ban them but guess what... money wins again.

And that tiger will now probably be killed for being a tiger.

11. What say we get
a picture of the zoo staff with said Tiger.

It is a shame some one has to die to teach zoo staff that Tigers are predators by nature and react by instinct not reason.

19. Another Darwin award winner
Letting a child pose unprotected with a full-grown tiger, while startling the animal with a FLASH. Jeezus, what'd they expect was going to happen?

There are no limits to the depths of human stupidity.

22. The zoo has stopped allowing visitors to pose with its tigers
And they should NEVER have started. Tigers are WILD ANIMALS - this type of thing is inevitable if humans CHOOSE to be stupid about that - and it's NOT the tiger's fault.

24. I took a day tour to China
during a trip to Hong Kong. On the itinerary was a zoo visit in Shenzhen, ostensibly to see the pandas. (Not a fan of zoos to begin with, but...) Well, one of the stops was to offer a chance to pose with a tiger that was choke-chained to a stone pedestal. The animal couldn't fully raise its head, and on either side were women with sticks who would smack it if it moved. My friend and I, along with one other Australian couple, refused to get off the bus because the animal abuse was so obvious and offensive. (The Aussies approached us to comment on how disturbing the whole thing was, and how upsetting it was to see people clamboring off the bus for face time for their souvenirs at the expense of a helpless animal.) It still upsets me to think of it.

I recall glancing out the window to see a fat tourist sitting astride the tiger and waving for a picture. It made me sick. I try to focus instead on the Aussies who obviously had a heart and a conscience.

I hate-hate-hate animal abuse.

25. Nothing happened to me...
My wife and I had a picture taken with a lion and nothing happened, in fact I never felt that I was in any danger at all.

But now that I think about it, I might have felt safe because the lion was 4 weeks old and was more interested in the bottle of milk my wife was holding than mauling us.

to help out. There are so many place down here that have cats and they need volunteers. The guy that had these cats was a friggin crack addict so if it weren't for the volunteers they would have just perished. So I did not pay to have this picture taken. I used to help clean cages and feed and just spend time with them, (from outside the cage). There was another person in the cage that you can't see. Anyway her name is Yana, (she is a Florida Panther)

(And I'm dropping my strange paranoia about putting my picture on this site for now.)

I don't agree with keeping any animals in any cage but these cats were already there and they could not go back into the wild. And I would never go in with Lion or Tiger. They have all been moved and have a much better place to live now. But if anyone in the south wants to help out with exotic animals there are plenty of opportunities and the animals will love you for it. Just be careful.

I miss them all awful.

29. How beautiful!
(You AND the cat!)

I'm the last to flame those who do animal rescue work. You're heroes. And it's always fun to see pix of fellow DUers.

One of these days I'll suck it up and try some volunteer work with animals...but I'm afraid I'll freak when I see firsthand the results of abuse. Shoot - I cry at CARTOONS! (Scarred by "Bambi" at the age of 5, and let's not even talk about "Dumbo"!)

Meanwhile I'll just lavish more love on my 4 pampered puddy-tats (all adopted strays).
