A lively Mardi Gras today in the French Quarter
I got there early and left early but had a good time. Weather was great. Crowd was big if not great. Nudity to a minimum (but its still early in the day.) Beads were flying. The Bourbon Street Awards show for best costumes (drag, leather, groups, show) was a site to behold. All the boys were dressed to the nines. And the religious zealots were out in force spewing their hate early and often.

Some of the costumes:
- Lots of astronauts in diapers
- Sex Machines
- A chick magnet
- lots of pirates
- the whole cast of wizard of oz
- rubber plant man (covered in condoms)
- almost naked guys
- almost naked girls
- lots of body painting
- one guy dressed as a urinal
- lots of marching bands in the quarter

and of course the politicians were trashed unmercifully. Another good time was had by this old fart who can't hang out all night like in the olden days.

3. Hello Dear
The old guy can't hang with the kids anymore. Its only 3:30 in the afternoon, I'm home already and pooped. I probably walked five miles in and around the quarter (over and over). I had a great time and everyone was enjoying themselves. I wish you were here too.

I'm going to check out NOLA.com for pictures of the festivities! I went to the afternoon parades when I went to Mardi Gras in NOLA a few years ago. I also attended parades in Mobile, AL, home to the first Mardi Gras celebrations! They have a womans krewe there that throws Moonpies but, thankfully, not RC Colas! Those could hurt! ;)

:hi:

7. I had to chuckle
at the drag queen show on Bourbon. The local stations were covering it but the Emcee, (a scantily clad female) was cursing profusely much to the delight of the crowd. Everybody was a motherfucker this and a motherfucker that and constant gay jokes and entendres (is that a word?) She did a "fabulous" job. News directors will have an editing smorgasboard with that bunch of video.

There is a krewe in Slidell that throws moonpies but they have been having pretty severe membership issues since the Hurricane.

This year's Rex Queen is a student at the University of Georgia.

11. Cool! UGA is being well represented at Mardi Gras this year.
Being queen of Rex is quite an honor!

The drag queens sound like they were having a great time!

I'm going to wear my best Mardi Gras beads and eat some King cake tonight!

4. Anyway you spell it is fine my friend
I had a good time for all at DU. Although the real fun starts when the sun goes down and I'll be nowhere near the quarter.

Mark your calendar - Mardi Gras 2008 - 5 February.

6. Maybe next year...
then again, I was in the city on Twelfth Night (the official beginning of Carnival season), and even attended a party held at the home of a former DUer. The traditional king cake was served, and so, technically, I broke the string of 16 carnival seasons away (shame on me!)

I am, however, happily streaming away:

and wearing some of the beads I picked up off Bourbon St. the day of the Saints-Eagles game!

9. Um...I don't think I'd go as a urinal.
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 04:56 PM by trof
Not unless I wanted to get wet.
;-)

On edit: Like I always say, it's better to pissed OFF than pissed ON.

13. I recall
several years back when Jeffrey Dahmer was all the rage. A urinal paled in comparison to the creativity that year.

This years costume was almost too complicated. A urinal and a beer keg combination on the guys back. Let your mind race.

12. Have you ever seen the judges?
A bunch of friends of mine have been going down for years. One day they set up shop outside a cafe and judge womens breasts complete with black robes and powdered wigs. They stamp them approved and hand out certificates. Another day they parade and one of them is in a straight jacket being led by a leash.

If ya see em, say hi from ears.
