Rumors at the workplace have my ulcers going.....
Ugh.. Just gotta love this * economy.

So far this year we've had two rounds of layoffs, and we're millions in the hole compared to plan. Believe it or not, the news just got worse today.

Based on sales projections for the 3Q, we will be $30 million short out of a planned $47 million for the year. To compensate, and the source I get these from has been right on every time, there will either be another 10% layoff or a 10% pay cut across the board.

Where's the TUMS and Maalox!

:grr:

5. From what I hear....
...they're leaning towards the 10% pay cut. I don't think I can absorb that loss...not being a single parent.

4. You wanna know something worse
my company is actually making profit in this environment, yet we've still had 3 rounds of layoffs and the office is starting to get sparsely populated. Right now I've got 4 cubes all to myself.

11. BE PREPARED!
I had 3 layoffs in my airline career, about 2 years each.
The first one caught me flat-footed, socks down, and knickers around my knees.
Car loan, mortgage, outstanding debts on 3 credit cards.
It changed my whole way of living.
The only loan I have is my mortgage.
Credit card (1) gets paid off EVERY month.
Pay your debts down as much as you possibly can.
Shop grocery specials.
All that standard stuff.
But the main thing is pay off all the debts you can.
Get the lowest interest rate possible for those you can't.
You can write off home equity loan interest.
Become a lean, mean financial machine.
Good luck.

13. Good for you.
I was raised by a single mom and I can identify.
After the first layoff our official family motto became "Hope for the best, but plan for the worst".
That won't get you in trouble.

14. Get your resume together.
If you think the company might lay you off, beat them to it. Put our your resume, send out feelers, take some action.
When I got laid off they telegraphed it a month in advance (they weren't the brightest bunch of managers, hence the layoff. By the time the layoff rolled around, I pretty much had another offer.

Don't just wait for the man to hand you your ass. Get going!

15. You get tons of sympathy from me, really
:freak:

Don'cha suspect that this whole "economic downturn" crap is just another excuse to put workers in their place? I've never bought into the myth that just because I have a post-graduate degree and a professional license that I'm *anything* other than working class. I HAVE to work; I'm only one or two paychecks away from welfare, just like 99% of the other wage earners in this country.

The bosses know it, and they have no shame about exploiting it.

Just today, I was called into my supervisor's office for a reprimand. My crime? LEARNING ON THE JOB! (Gasp, Horrors!). I'd actually been caught reading books during my break, and abusing my computer privileges to sign up for free on-line courses, and using my credit card to purchase medical texts.

Never mind that any employer with a lick of sense would encourage his or hers workers to get educated on his/hers own time.

Thinkers are dangerous to these petty tyrants.
