12. The greatest song on a great album...
In April, my duo is playing a suite of Reed's "...Says" songs: "Stephanie Says" "Candy Says", "Lisa Says", "Caroline Says I", "Caroline Says II" (with a little "Happy Birthday, Caroline" thrown in)
It should be good if we can do those great songs justice

10. Zombie by the Cranberries
It was quite sad when it came out...
If one allows ones own imagination to paint the video using todays images from the Iraqi war...

When I see and hear this video I visualize the bastard republican senators on the House Floor fighting to keep the Iraq war going. (If you watched C-Span during the debates you know what I am talking about). I contrasted that image with the images I have seen right here in the Democratic Underground which show the horrors depleted uranium has done to the babies being born over in Iraq right now. I SOOOO wish I owned a Mac so I could take you there.

Go watch the video and paint your own mental images over the existing one and see...:

16. "Someone to Fall Back On," Jason Robert Brown.
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 01:01 AM by deadparrot
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ECpTC4FtIDQ

I’ll never be
A knight in armor
With a sword in hand,
Or a kamikaze fighter;
Don’t count on me
To storm the barricades
And take a stand,
Or hold my ground;
You’ll never see
Any scars or wounds -
I don’t walk on coals,
I won’t walk on water:
I am no prince,
I am no saint,
I am not anyone’s wildest dream,
But I can stand behind
And be someone to fall back on.

Some comedy -
You’re bruised and beaten down
And I’m the one
Who’s looking for a favor.
Still, honestly,
You don’t believe me
But the things I have
Are the things you need.
You look at me
Like I don’t make sense,
Like a waste of time,
Like it serves no purpose -
I am no prince,
I am no saint,
And if that’s what you believe you need,
You’re wrong - you don’t need much,
You need someone to fall back on...

And I’ll be that:
I’ll take your side.
If I’m the only one,
I’m used to that.
I’ve been alone,
I’d rather be
The half of us,
The least of you,
The best of me.
And I will be
Your prince,
I’ll be your saint,
I will go crashing through fences
In your name. I will, I swear -
I’ll be someone to fall back on.
I’ll be the one who waits,
And for as long as you’ll let me,
I will be the one you need.
I’ll be someone to fall back on:
Your prince,
Your saint,
The one you believe you need
I’ll be - I’ll be
Someone to fall back on.

18. "Too Far Down" -- Husker Du
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 01:09 AM by Common Sense Party
I'm down again
And I don't know how to tell you
But maybe this time I can't come back
Because I might be too far down

I wish for real
That I could turn it on and off
Like hot and cold and up and down
Because I'm down again

I'm too far down
I couldn't begin to smile
Because I can't even laugh or cry
Because I just can't do it

If it was so easy to be happy
Why am I so down?
All I can do is sit and wonder if it's going to end
Or if I should just go away forever

When I sit and think
I wish that I just could die
Or let someone else be happy
By setting my own self free

And you don't want the emotion
Because the taste it leaves is for real
But nothing's ever real until it's gone
And I might be too far down

And is this just another thrown away
Or is this the end of the whole stupid road
But you wouldn't want to know how I feel anyway
Because the darkest hole is at the end of the road

I'm down again
And I guess I'm not the only one who dreams
That there's not any way to tell you
Because I might be too far down

19. "Here Comes a Regular" -- The Replacements
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 01:10 AM by Common Sense Party
Well a person can work up a mean mean thirst
After a hard day of nothin much at all
Summers passed, its too late to cut the grass
There aint much to rake anyway in the fall

And sometimes I just aint in the mood
To take my place in back with the loudmouths
Youre like a picture on the fridge thats never stocked with food
I used to live at home, now I stay at the house

And everybody wants to be special here
They call your name out loud and clear
Here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one here today?

Well a drinkin buddy thats bound to another town
Once the police made you go away
And even if youre in the arms of someones baby now
Ill take a great big whiskey to ya anyway

Everybody wants to be someones here
Someones gonna show up, never fear
cause here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one who feels ashamed?

Kneeling alongside old sad eyes
He says opportunity knocks once then the door slams shut
All I know is Im sick of everything that my money can buy
The fool who wastes his life, God rest his guts

First the lights, then the collar goes up, and the wind begins to blow
Turn your back on a pay-you-back, last call
First the glass, then the leaves that pass, then comes the snow
Aint much to rake anyway in the fall

Another from Nick Cave - "As I Sat Sadly By Her Side": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__MOjSyLgNc

(if you want beautiful melancholy, very few songwriters do it better than these three, IMO)

24.  Always on my mind & Angel flying too close to the ground
Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind

Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm sorry I was blind

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your
Sweet love hasn't died
And give me
Give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied
satisfied

Little things I should have
Said and done
I just never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind....

~~~~~~~~~~~
Willie Nelson-
Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground
If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing
And hung around a while
Tried to keep your spirits up
While you were feelin' down
I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
Fly on, fly on past the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up
Than see you down
Leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
Eva's voice was extraordinary on this recording, and it is both sad and melancholy that she is no longer with us.
27. That's one song where...
...knowledge of the life of the artist really adds to the poignancy. Sting's original was quite nice, but it's hard to listen to Eva's version while realizing that she would die so young and just before finding an audience. :-(
28. Eagle on the Ground by Billy Joe Shaver
I'm not a country fan by any stretch of the imagination. But this song about his son and his son passing away, is just brilliantly haunting and sad in it's own right but made more so by the back story that the guitar and music track is his son's playing that he had recorded before he passed away.
