As much as I respect the ACLU for all it does, I will never join again.

When I was a member back in the 1980s, they sold my name to all kinds of other organizations that bombarded me with fundraising mailings. I knew they got my info from the ACLU because there was a small typo in my name. This typo was on every single one of the unwanted fund solicitations that I received.

In addition, the ACLU sent me a mailing asking for money about every 2-3 weeks.

After a couple of years of this, I got tired of the endless fundraising letters, and wrote the ACLU a stiff letter telling them never to contact me again.

I don't think there's a bigger enemy of the radical right than the ACLU! They have overturned many hateful right-wing ballot measures. The right wing hates them because they are a threat to their rightwing agenda. Bill O'Reilly hates them because they make his stupid "culture war" harder to pull off. I used to dislike the ACLU years ago, but after finding out what they are really about, and how much the radical right despises them, I am definitely a supporter!

16. it's good for pissing off repub family members at family dinners

I had fun getting to whip it out on Turkey Day this past year and stick it in my conservative family members face who said that the ACLU was ruining the country.
It felt so good. 10$ is worth it. Plus, the ACLU does support civil liberties. And yes, they do send you tons of junk mail begging for more money.
I have my ACLU card right behind my NRA card and concealed weapons permit.

17. i got the "omg, you're an actual 'card-carrying member of the ACLU!" comment the other day...

i went to pick up my take-out pizza order, and when i opened my wallet, my ACLU card was sitting right on top.

The clerk said that, and i just smiled. I also showed him my membership cards for AU, People for the American Way, the HRC, and GLAAD!
