I have a co-worker who is. Doesn't matter if it's Pennywise or Ronald McDonald.

And what was that ?Stephen King? show with the scary-freaking clown??? That was enough to turn me off from clowns FOREVER!

But, yeah, clowns in general, just kinda creepy.

50. He's no Krusty, though!
I saw him at Johnson Creek Fred Meyer a couple of years ago and totally embarrassed my 17-year-old son when I went and got a hug and bought his book and got it autographed. When I got home and actually read the book I discovered that he's very Christian and (like Mr. Rogers did) considers his work with kids as a ministry. I got a hug from Fred Bear, also. My poor son.

I'm glad to know he's still "Rusty." In the 1970s my brother and sister-in-law saw Heck Harper singing in a bar. That just seemed so wrong to me!

8. Clowns are rarely clowns any more.
Clowns are meant to entertain people. They're supposed to smack each other around, fall on their ass, and make a crowd laugh. It's a young man's occupation.

These guys, for instance, are real, modern clowns...

Unfortunately, most people perceptions of "clown" is some creepy overweight old guy wearing pancake makeup and making balloon animals. There's nothing funny about balloon animals. I understand why people get creeped out by those "clowns."

24. I think they're spooky.
The "IT" character in a Stephen King series often appears as a clown.

Smurfs are pretty scary, too. Saw one on a People's Court episode. He sued to get paid for entertaining at a child's party, after the parents refused to pay. Seems the children started crying when Smurf walked in. The Plaintiff was a 6'4" Jeff Goldblum lookalike, who'd been painted blue and was wearing a white clown suit. I'd cry, too, if he showed up at my party.

25. Used to date a girl with claurophobia. Totally normal in all respects, above...
...average intelligence, very articulate, was able to suss out new social situations very well. In short: A normal person, definitely on the smart side.

Always been deathly fearful of clowns. Really and truly. As you say, does not matter if it was Ronald McDonald or Pennywise.

She reminded me that it was generally no less absurd than my fear of spiders. However, if there was a clown, a picture of a clown, a painting of a clown- anything, she would not be able to look at it. If there was a real clown present or nearby she would literally position herself so that I was between her and the clown.

One day she found my greasepaint and the whole relationship came tumbling down.

True story, except the part about the greasepaint.

I spent a large part of my childhood on Shriners Hospital. The decor always included lots of clowns (because of the Shrine Circus). I never thought they were particularly uplifting, or interesting. They were just guys with make up.

OTOH. The Shriners were my all-time heroes!!!!!!!1!
