9. I'm a believer and I can explain that one..
Maybe someone let some helium filled balloons free and they're reflecting light from the setting sun?

The Chicago sighting is much harder to explain.

5. Here's the story behind the video. Sceptics say it's UFO ballons..
Or lanterns.

The mysterious lights

WE HAVE extraordinary video footage giving first-hand evidence of the Archway UFO phenomenon which brought the area to a standstill.

Here's YOUR chance to decide whether aliens were actually hovering over Archway - or whether there was a more innocent explanation.

Amateur camerman John Zimmerman, of Bredgar Road, Archway, filmed the spectacle from a vantage point in Holloway Road.

The "squadron" of around 15 orange lights spread panic among passers-by who witnessed it at around 5.30pm on January 31.

People screamed - some fearing it was a terrorist attack. Police received 999 calls within minutes.

The lights moved in a southerly direction then hovered above Archway before disappearing and appearing again. The eerie display lasted about 10 minutes.

Mr Zimmerman, 50, said: "I was watching from Holloway Road. I realised I had my camera and started filming. They moved steadily and slowly, all at the same speed."

Experts from the Royal Astronomical Society and Met Office weather centre were at a loss to explain the lights.

UFO sceptics insist it was no more than a group of "sky lanterns" or "UFO balloons" - one-off miniature hot air balloons.

But all the eyewitnesses who contacted us are adamant the lights were NOT lanterns - because of the way that they moved.

Designer James Zafar, from Palace Road, Crouch End, who witnessed the scene from Bredgar Road, said: "It is something I can't explain but I'm sure it wasn't lanterns."

Now YOU can judge for yourself... watch the film clip by clicking below.

8. I use to take dry cleaning bags, straws and candles and make the lanterns
when I was a kid. The hot air from the candles would inflate the bags and off it would go. Very easy to make.

13. It looks slightly overcast
so dunno how those can be stars, although I suppose it's possible. The camera was moving so much it was impossible to tell if they were moving or stationary. The lens reflection was large and bright and the purple lines were odd, to say the least. Cheap lens?

Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 03:37 PM by Phoonzang
The huge, bright orange things were streetlights. The UFOs were the fleet of lights in the sky. For a second there I almost wet myself. B-)

Anyway, the video wasn't long enough and the sky was being blocked by those streetlights. Also, the guy didn't zoom in. I have no doubt that sighting happened but this video doesn't show enough for anyone to make a judgment

11. of course, I wasn't there, but
this is obviously swamp gas igniting and causing anomalous reflections on the concave surface of a temperature inversion in the lower atmosphere.

either that or weather balloons.

or maybe really big lightning bugs.

Notice how the position of the "object" depends on which way the person's pointing the camera.

You need a fixed point to focus on. Then you can see they're moving. :)

34. Flash the message..Something's out there....Everyone's a Captain Kirk.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14IRDDnEPR4

You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got.
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone.

Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, Something's out there.
Floating in the summer sky.
99 red balloons go by.

99 red balloons.
floating in the summer sky.
Panic bells, it's red alert.
There's something here from somewhere else.
The war machine springs to life.
Opens up one eager eye.
Focusing it on the sky.
Where 99 red balloons go by.

99 Decision Street.
99 ministers meet.
To worry, worry, super-scurry.
Call the troops out in a hurry.
This is what we've waited for.
This is it boys, this is war.
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 Knights of the air
Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a superhero.
Everyone's a Captain Kirk.
With orders to identify.
To clarify and classify.
Scramble in the summer sky.
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 dreams I have had.
In every one a red balloon.
It's all over and I'm standing pretty.
In this dust that was a city.
If I could find a souvenier.
Just to prove the world was here.
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.

:applause:

38. It looks like balloons..
right around sunset. Ever looked at a tall mirrored building at sunset and seen the top floors reflect light? I think that's what's happening here. The balloons are above the earth's shadow and they appear very bright because everything below is darkened. Maybe they were foil helium balloons, though even a light colored latex balloon could reflect a lot of light.

40. Mylar balloons
The reason they are reddish orange is because they are reflecting the sun as it set over the horizon behind the camera. They move slowly keeping their position relative to each other which is how they would act if wind driven. I would bet my last dollar they moved in the same direction the wind at that altitude.
