6. I flirted with Gladiator, and Conan the Barbarian
but I enjoyed Marv's story big time in Sin City...and so much work/effort went into Superman the Movie, its' mind numbing.....I'm a big sucker for big war epic types of movies, like Troy, Gladiator, The Patriot, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan....

Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 12:36 AM by FredStembottom
Ya know - I just really don't like much Japanese "anime'", but that one really got under my skin. Unforgettable!

Did you ever see Grave of the Fireflies? Terribly sad - and soooo good.

I was just put "Liberty Valence" on my Netflix yesterday! Always meant to see that but never did.

Ever since I saw it for the first time in 1982 it's been far and away my favorite film, and Ebert nails it here, too:

71. Wow! That was one of the most boring films I've ever seen.
I went to see it because Siskel & Ebert raved about it so much, and man was I disappointed, to say the least. I found it so boring. I did not find the conversation the least bit interesting, and I love good conversation. I think my mother is still ticked off at me for bringing her to see it with me.

77. I've probably seen it 15 times
Converted scads of people to it, too. About 10-20 (depending on the year) used to have a My Dinner With Andre party every year where we'd eat, drink, indulge in herb, and watch the film. And have long, sometimes "heated" (w/ laughter, of course) discussions about the points Wally and Andre brought up in the film.

106. One of my all-time favorites
I saw it when it first came out on VHS (I don't think it ever played in local theatres) and later watched it another five or so times when it played on HBO. It reminds me of the long ad hoc conversations I had had with my best friend in various bars and restaurants during the late '70s and early '80s. I was always Wally Shawn in those conversations.

60. I can't bear to watch "Titanic."
Maybe it's just me, but I _loathe_ films that seem as if they set out from the get-go to manipulate viewers' emotions. The historical facts surrounding the Titanic were perfectly adequate to stir compassion; I don't need some contrived love story to beat me over the head. Know what I mean?

Anything by Kurosawa is great. The Seventh Seal might be the best made film of all-time, I think Bergman was never better. The Treasure of Sierra Madre is my favorite Bogey film. The Deer Hunter is Michael Cimino's best work by far, a peerless cast. Strangelove is iconic. You have great taste, my friend, so I'll just stop at right with that. :)

53. My top 10:
The 10 must-see films:

"Tokyo Story" (1953) A universal story about family relationships and respect for the elderly that is just as pertinent today, and in any country, as it was in Japan in the 1950s. This film may change your attitude about your parents.

"Soy Cuba (I Am Cuba)" (1964) My choice for the best cinematography of all time. The camera floats effortlessly around the scenes and captures life in Cuba just before Castro's revolution - and illustrates why the revolution was necessary.

"Au Hasard, Balthazar" (1966) Enigmatic parable about the life of a mistreated donkey - is it a Christ-like symbol, or what? You decide. A depressing film, but extraordinarily well-made, and with careful interpretation, can change your outlook on life.

"Salt of the Earth" (1954) Re-creation of a true story about a strike at a zinc mine in New Mexico. This film is in desperate need of a remake with full production values.

"Psycho" (1960) One of those rare movies where everything comes together: the sleazy, run-down atmosphere, the dry, witty script full of black humor, the brilliant direction, camera angles and editing, the superb acting, and of course the unforgettable background music.

"Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" (1962) A macabre comedy-thriller about two sisters in a large house together, one crippled physically and the other mentally. Bette Davis turns in the performance of her career.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) Landmark science-fiction film that easily surpasses modern-day sci-fi in terms of intellectual challenge. Ponderous and slow-moving, it bores young moviegoers raised on the frenetic action of video games. But it dares to ask the big questions and leaves it up to the viewer to come up with most of the answers. The only sci-fi film to even approach this in quality is "Contact" (1997)

"Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" (1965) The best action-adventure movie, even with a shoestring budget. Memorable characters, a sassy script loaded with double-entendres and thrilling action all add up to a roller coaster of a movie.

"Five Easy Pieces" (1970) A great character study, and Jack Nicholson's finest hour, in my opinion.

"El Norte" (1983) The best film ever about the topic of immigration.

Also these are essential films:

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Fantasia (1940)
Casablanca (1942)
It's A Wonderful Life (1946)

84. Thanks - I admit I'm a little biased towards foreign films, because
they seem to "get to the point" better and more convincingly than most American movies.

86. Tokyo Story sounds particularly intriguing
Maybe because it's so close to home (or what passes for home these days). I wonder if it's available in an English version, since my Japanese still ain't so hot.

92. It does have English subtitles, but interestingly, they don't caption everything,
In the version I watched, they only added subtitles for what they considered "essential" to the storyline. So there are a lot of little comments made between the characters that don't get English subtitles on the screen. I just assume they are Japanese formalities. The VHS tapes of this movie have poor picture quality that kind of "flickers" like very old movies. And the sound quality of the VHS tape is not that great either. When Criterion made their DVD of it, they cleaned it up a lot. So I would strongly recommend renting only the Criterion Collection DVD of it. The film seems a little slow and long to some viewers, but I see it as building its case slowly and meticulously. It packs an emotional wallop, not from any one scene or event in particular, but from the overall impression it leaves.

59. Primer: only because I haven't ruined it by watching it and watching it and watching it
I am savoring this puppy. I've seen it twice over two years, still a lot of it doesn't fit for me yet.
Kind of like holding on to last Sunday's crossword until you fill out the last half dozen boxes. Kind of.
In general, movies have started to bore me. I fall asleep at the theater and at home. I suck.

68. A Clockwork Orange is my favorite.
Kubrik took such an amazing chance with hat filom. To ask people to identify with a monster as vicious as Alex over the prospect of having society take away a person's freedom of choice is as daring as it has ever gotten in filmmaking.

I love Kubrik and just about anything he has done. Close behind A Clockwork Orange is Dr. Strangelove.

I also absolutely love The Bicycle Thief. I think the scene where Ricci has to decide whether to take the bike is the single most powerful scene in the history of cinema.

Other favorites of mine include The Tin Drum and To Kill A Mockingbird.
