Post a pic of your favorite adult toy
I just love my SR71 spy plane. It comes in handy when I need to pick up something from Paris and I only have a couple hours to spare.

I am not going to sully my fun thread by
a) Making some juvenile remark about guns and compensation issues
or
b) Ask what practical applications there are for a pseudo-assault rifle

No matter how tempting it would be to do those two things

7. Gun enthusiast that I am, I have a hard time calling guns "toys"
I support your right to own that rifle, but I do worry about the label. Yes, it can be a lot of fun to shoot off one of those guns for recreation - I'm guilty of it, too. Feels great perforating that paper target with an MAK-90, though. But we must never forget, even for a moment, that guns, high-powered model rockets, etc. are serious business.

9. thus the term "adult toy"
Fast cars, and spy planes are dangerous as well, but they can be fun for responsible adults who are safe and professional.
I also like whitewater kayaking, but I would not rec that you try it if you cant swim. That could be just as dangerous as an untrained novice "playing" with a gun.

I remember being a kid and looking at things that adults did for fun and looking forward to being an adult myself. Unfortunately now everything has been "childproofed". Vegas is now family friendly! Isn't there anything that only adults, responsible ones at that, can do for fun?

no, mine is on its way, and will look exactly like that.

it is a Lotus Exige S. Hand built in Hethel England, one of the best handling cars on the planet, and a blast to drive. It gets it's performance through light weight, not a huge motor. The car weighs 1900lbs, contrast that with most cars that weigh over 3000lbs, most significantly over 3000lbs.

I cant wait for it to get here, and for spring to come. :headbang:

not in relation to other cars that perform similarly.

This one is $64,000, to get comparable performance you would have to spend almost double that just to start, up to almost 1 million bucks just to get the same performance. All while paying more for gas, insurance, maintenance, etc...

this one, with its 1.8 litre toyota motor is as eco-friendly as sports cars get.

Ducatis rule for style, but they're really maintenance pigs. I really like the Magna, but it's not exactly an all-day bike. It gets pretty "buzzy" around 75 mph, but the best thing about it is that it's paid for.

Sometimes when we are fishing for king mackeral we are 12 or so miles off the coast. No land can be seen at all. It's something. Almost spiritual.

But I think this qualifis me for at least runner up status. May I present to you the horn officailly kown in elitist music cirlces as "The Overgrown Bubble Pipe" & known to the ex-marching band weenies as a Bass Clarinet.

It's actually got a very deep, resonant and rich sound-- much like the cello to the clarinet's violin. I bought a used one some years back, got my chops back, picked up some sheet music and now jam in a band that covers all the AC/DC tunes (not really... I never picked up sheet music yet)

As far as "toys" go, this would probably be mine:

That's my "new old" Sunfish. Everything but the hull is from a small wooden kit sailboat my sister and I built with our dad in the early 1980's, using marine plywood and Minifish (small Sunfish) sail and hardware; I was about 13 at the time. We raced that boat for a couple of years in a local class, then used it for pleasure day sailing for years. I kept the boat when I married and moved to Florida, and we sailed it some down there as well. Unfortunately, that hull became unseaworthy due to rot a few years ago, but the Minifish bits were still in good condition in our garage.

Then I noticed a couple months ago that one of our neighbors had an old 14' Sunfish hull (a late 1980's AMF/Alcort) buried under a bunch of junk in his back yard. The boom and rudder of that boat were broken, the daggerboard was lost, the sail was in bad shape, and the hull needed some minor repairs. BUT I just happened to have all those parts from our old wooden kit boat, so I bought the old hull for $200, and here we are.

The hull still needs some fiberglass repair, cleaning, and painting, the current rudder is a bit kludged (a little dry-rotted, some added bracing to compensate, needs a new one at some point), and I am in the process of installing a 6" port in front of the daggerboard trunk, but the boat sails beautifully.

(And no, that's not our neighborhood...)

Also have this (not a toy, but it's still lots of fun, though, and probably most-prized possession):

No, that's not an AK-47. It's a non-automatic civilian gun (2002-model Romanian SAR-1, purchased in 2003) built on a civilian receiver and civilian fire control parts, while making use of an AK barrel, gas system, and stock set. The sight is a Russian Kobra collimator sight (unmagnified heads-up display, yes, I'm a geek), and the magazine is a Hungarian 20-rounder.

It's fairly low-powered as rifles go (just barely powerful enough to hunt deer with, if I were a hunter), but low power = mild recoil, and ammo is pretty darn economical for a centerfire rifle. Also can't beat that style of gas system for reliability, and I like the eastern European aesthetics. Best accuracy so far is about 2.5 arcminutes with optics, which isn't bad for a 16" barreled carbine with a heavy gas piston. It's not a 1-MOA rifle like an AR, but my local range only goes to 200 yards, and 7.62x39mm is at most a 300-yard cartridge anyway.

if so did you stain the furniture yourself? If so, good job. I just changed my furniture out to an a-6 tactical stock (like on my AR15) with a black poly Galil style handguard. I had stained the wood to a dark cherry and I didnt want to scratch it, but it looked a lot better with the wood furniture than the plastic tactical stuff. I might get another one so that I can keep it around for looks.

73. Yes, it's a Century...
but believe it or not, that's the original finish, even though I'd love to take credit for it. They have done some runs of SAR's with decent furniture now and then, but I have also seen some with bad finishes or practically no finish at all on the wood.

I bought that in 2003 from a gun shop in northwest Florida that catered to collectors and milsurp aficionados--racks of Enfields, Mosin-Nagants, Mausers, K31's, Russian SKS's. Could have gotten one cheaper from a local gun show (I paid $379 for mine, going rate was probably $325 at a show), but this one had nice wood, the sights and gas block were on straight, and the shop threw in an RPK magazine. In retrospect, I'm glad I bought the one I did, as it's been a good one.

Did you have any trigger slap with yours? Mine has just a hint of slap if it gets hot, but normally the trigger is very good (better than my mini-14). I might someday put a Tapco G2 trigger assembly in it, but it's not high on my priority list. A slant brake would also be cool, but I'd have to have a gunsmith do it.

74. no slap
When I first bought it, my cousin warned me of trigger slap. I ran a few hundred rounds through it and didnt understand what he was talking about. He claimed that I was ignorant and he ran 200 rounds through it and was pissed because it had no slap. The front sight had been bumped and cants to the left a tad bit, but the rest of the action is straight. I adjusted the front iron sight and I'm right handed, so the gun is accurate at the 100 yard range that I shoot at. I'm happy with the accuracy at 100 yards. I have scopes and a decent red dot on my bushmaster ar 15, and I use it for long distance shots..
The gun store nearest me just got in two cases of old Mosin-Nagants and has them for $125 each. It was so hard to not grab one, but the last thing I need is another caliber of ammo to stock.

77. LOL about the Mosins...
my wife bought me this one (Finn M39, receiver date 1905) as a Christmas present a few years ago, from the same gun shop:

It kicks a heck of a lot worse than 7.62x39mm, that's for sure...

79. I grew up sailing Sunfish as a kid ...
I've done everything possible one can do to a Sunfish, including sinking it, not easy to do.

One of our friends had the kit Sunfish, but everyone else in my parent's social group bought the fiberglass version. It is a very fun boat.

My mid-Sixties Traynor (made in Canada, eh) Bassmaster, with a circuit nearly identical to a Marshall JTM 45 and/or a Fender tweed Bassman. Found it in a thrift store for $40. SUUUUUUWEET!!!

83. My lame favorite

An 80GB iPod like the one I got about a month ago. I held off forever on getting one and I have to admit that I love it.

If I had the money, though, I'd go for the Ariel Atom roadster even though for me it'd be completely impractical. Curb weight is about 1300 pounds and yes, it's street-legal. They start at $35K and go up to around $45K, depending on options.
