cooking emergency question: Help!
I have a recipe for skillet chicken with rice, that involves cooking the rice in chicken stock for 15 minutes

S.O. brought back "Success" rice from the market (it didn't even occur to me to tell him "NOT instant rice" - and besides, he wouldn't have known the difference).

Can I take the "Success" rice out of the bag and use it, or not?

1. Please define what "Success" rice is, then we can help.

Is it already cooked? Something you microwave? What?

4. Is it just rice, or does it have other shit in it?
Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 07:18 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I'm sorry, but I really have no idea what the hell "Success" rice is.

Is it already in the bag and cooked, and the water just warms it up? Does it absorb the water? Why does it even need to be in a bag? What?

8. I don't know. It's just "Success" brand rice. Dry in a bag.
You stick the bag in water.

I have no idea if it's already cooked or what - that's why I'm asking. Maybe someone fami8liar with the product will be able to help here.

5. I would boil the rice in the chicken stock rather than water.
If it is the stuff I'm thinking of.

Either way, I think it will be great.

7. Success Rice:

Cooking Directions - Microwave
1) Remove film from cup. Place cup in microwave and heat on HIGH for 60 seconds (cooking time for 2 cups is also 60 seconds).
2) IMPORTANT: Remove cup carefully from microwave taking hold of cup from the side using an oven mitt or potholder. DO NOT PLACE HAND OVER TOP OF CUP WHEN REMOVING. CAUTION: Cup and steam will be very hot.
3) Stir rice and pour onto serving dish or eat right out of the cup. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
Microwave ovens vary so cooking time might be different. REFRIGERATE UNUSED PORTION AFTER OPENING.
Cooking Directions - Range
1) In a medium-size saucepan, add 2 quarts of water and bring to a boil.
2) Carefully place cup in boiling water.
3) Allow sealed cup to remain in boiling water for 5 minutes.
4) Remove cup carefully from water using tongs or other utensil.
5) Let cup set for 2 to 3 minutes to cool.
6) Hold cup with pot holder and remove film carefully. Caution: Steam will be very hot.
7) Stir rice and pour onto serving dish or eat right out of the cup. Serve immediately … Enjoy!

10. I understand this -- what I'm asking is "can I substitute it"
I wouldn't have purchased it myself.

I would have purchased just plain old regular rice.

I'm trying to avoid a trip out to the market in the cold with dirty hair.

9. OK, if the recipe says "add cooked rice" dump it in then.
I really don't think it's gonna matter much.
Bon appetit.

13. P.S. Yeah, it probably has 'other shit' in it.
It'll still be OK.

16. On second perusal of the website, maybe no 'other shit'.
Wow, I got to say "shit" in two posts.

14. The recipe calls for uncooked rice
That's the problem. The rice cooks in the skillet in the chicken broth, and it's supposed to cook for 15 minutes, then add the chicken, then cook for 5-10 more.

The Success Rice in the bag says it should boil for 10 minutes.

21. Just use it like regular rice and only cook it 10 min
instead of 15 before you add the chicken. Take it out of the bag. It'll be fine.

15. I bet it says this on the box:
Out of the Bag Preparation

Success Rice can also be prepared "out-of-the-bag". Empty uncooked Success Rice into medium saucepan and add 1¼ cups liquid (such as water or broth) per bag. Bring liquid to a boil and reduce heat to medium. Cook until liquid is absorbed, about 10 minutes.

I got that from the website. So, yes, you can use the chicken stock.

20. So add the chicken after maybe 5 minutes of cooking rice
Because regular rice would take about 20 minutes to cook, so the chicken is being added about 5 minutes before the rice is finished cooking.

23. I went to that website and found the conversion
1 cup "Success" rice does not equal 1 cup regular rice

So I used more, and it came out GREAT

Thanks again!

18. Instant rice...like
Minute Rice or Uncle Ben's instant rice ought to work...it's the absorption of the stock that counts, not necessarily how long it cooks...just don't put it in as early if it's instant rice.

If it's the kind of rice that's pre-cooked and in a bag, then I doubt it. It might absorb some of the flavor, but not very much.

Send him back to the store.
