Poll question: avocado poll
How often would you eat avocados if they were available fresh all the time and weren't so blasted expensive?

Just trying to figure out if anyone else loves avocadoes as much as I do. Guacamole counts, but only if it's real, not that sour cream stuff with green food coloring in it.

1. I buy a 4 pack at the grocery store every week
Costs less than $3 and my wife and I mix one into our salads three or four times a week. If I buy them one at a time they are over $1 a piece.

3. I wish I could get them here that way
I bought three yesterday and they were $1.69 a piece. I usually won't pay that much for them, most I ever pay usually is a dollar and twenty-nine cents but I just had to have them, lol. Nice bar code. :hi:

28. This would be a good time to post my guacamole recipe...
It may seem a little nit-picky, but it's actually an easy recipe.

Easy and Great Guacamole

1/4 teaspoon salt
1 lime
1 large or 2 small cloves garlic
1/4 cup green taco sauce - not red
4 large Haas avocados, very ripe
Fresh tortilla chips

Use only Hass avocados - do not use Fuerte, Bacon or Zutano avocados. Pinkerton avocados are acceptable if Hass are not available, but the results are best with Hass. When fully ripe, the avocados will be completely black on the outside, and soft but not squishy.

Squeeze juice from the lime into a bowl. Cut the squeezed lime peel in a few pieces, and drop into the lime juice. Add salt and mash lime peel down. Allow to sit for a few minutes to let the lime oil come out of the peel. Then discard the lime peel.

Use only fresh garlic. Mash the garlic with a garlic press, then add to lime juice mixture. Add the green taco sauce. A can of diced mild green chiles can be substituted for the taco sauce. Use a stronger taco sauce if you want it more spicy, but do not use red taco sauce or red chilis, as they will ruin the bright green color of the guacamole. Stir mixture until thoroughly mixed.

Cut avocados in half and remove pits. If there is any brown flesh on the inside, cut that away. The green areas in the same avocado is still perfectly usable. Using a knife, dice the avocado flesh while still in the shell, then scoop out with spoon and into the lime juice mixture.

Add diced avocado to the mixture, and stir just until it blends in. It should still have hundreds of tiny chunks of avocado throughout, it should not be a completely smooth paste. If you are a salt fiend, taste the guacamole and if it is not salty enough for you, add 1/4 teaspoon more salt. But the tortilla chips will also supply salt. Do not add cumin or any other seasonings. Do not add tomatoes!

Cover tightly and refrigerate for one hour. Serve within 4 hours of making it - it will only last one day. Serve with the freshest tortilla chips you can get - go to a Mexican bakery if possible. This recipe never fails - set it down at a party and watch it vanish within minutes.

Enjoy!

"4 large Haas avocados, very ripe"

did something to me, lol. It sucks because there are no 24 hour grocery stores around here. :(

Are you anti-cilantro in your guacomole? I love cilantro.

32. No, I love cilantro. I confess I have put it in my guacamole, and it's good.
I think I added that comment to a later version of my recipe, but I must have just now posted an earlier version where I said no other seasonings. A little cilantro does enhance it, but you have to be careful that the cilantro doesn't overwhelm the other flavors. Avocados have a subtle flavor and the lime oil flavor is crucial to the recipe. Can you make me some too?

36. I would caution against buying the avocados from Chile, though. Because,
I bought some Hass avocados from Chile last week, and the flesh turned out to be gray, stringy and flavorless, even after ripening them in a warm corner. It was nothing like the buttery smooth green flesh of Hass avocados from California in the summer. Unfortunately the avocado crop here was damaged a month ago - it got down to 25 degrees one night here in San Diego. Not only did a significant number of the fruit freeze solid, but millions of the trees themselves have since died. In the local news they keep saying that consumers won't see any change in the retail price of avocados this summer, because the crop is going to be augmented by avocados from Mexico. But I'll believe that when I see it. The growers are going to have to recoup their losses somehow and I predict that the retail prices of avocados will be higher for a few years, just because of a few nights of sub-freezing temperatures here in January. Another casualty of climate change...

40. You can grow avocado plants as houseplants, but they won't bear fruit indoors.
They won't bear fruit unless they reach full, adult size, and avocados are tender, tropical trees that can die in sub-freezing weather. So unless you have a greenhouse that is large enough for a mature tree, or you live in a climate where freezing temps are rare or nonexistent, it's pretty much impossible to grow them to fruit-bearing size. Even in San Diego County (the "Big Avocado") they are usually planted on hillsides, where cold air drains away from them, and not on valley floors where cold air collects. The news keeps saying that in spite of the huge losses last month, the retail price will not be higher this year, so let's hope for the best!

41. That recipe sounds great!
I used to make it with just avocados and a little Pace Picante Sauce mixed in, nothing else. But I'm going to try your recip sometime. Up here, avocados are expensive, or else too rotten to wanna buy when they go on sale. I have bought the Costco bag a number of times (approx. 5 big avocadoes for approx. $7.50 or more) and sometimes I got weird ones --
---stringy all throughout BLECH!
---BROWN on the inside even though they didn't seem overripe at all from the outside
---peppery taste that left my tongue sore for a couple days (SWEAR to God this happened -- I became afraid of avocadoes after that figuring they are genetically modified or something.)

. . . . . I miss them though. Is it supposed to be better to find those 'organic?' Or is there such a thing?
