What do you guys think about covering gray hair?
When they first started coming in, it didn't bother me, but damn!!!!

Now those things are multiplying like crazy!!!

And my sister keeps teasing me, calling me an old bat

Does anyone here dye his or her hair? How about rinse?

1. Mine are ALL up front

and I am not shy about using horrid chemicals to cover it.

That said, if you wanted a more natural cover up, there are plenty of henna discussion groups out there.

THAT said, I could direct you to one of my favorite delphi forums, but you may become addicted to the other things the forum covers...I hesitate to recruit another junkie!

:)

16. It has come a LONG way from the "back in the day" stuff from the 70's
Here is your thread...I warn you

http://forums.delphiforums.com/mineralmania/messages/?start=Start+Reading+%3E%3E

Scroll the left hand column to the bottom, and click on the Henna Heads and Hairy issues. The ladies in there are FANATIC about natural products. No Chem, No Syn.

If that link does not work for you (it is a delphi forum, I think you can read without registering but not post), go to Delphi Forums, and search for Mineral Makeup Mania. Go to that forum, click the Start Reading link, and then scroll down to the Henna Header. WARNING...you could become TOTALLY addicted in this forum...you let me know.

2. My experience
I got my first gray hair when I was 13 and in the eighth grade. My gray hair became more visible during high school and by the time I was in law school, it was quite noticable. When I was about 25, I started getting my hair streaked dark brown to cover some of the gray. However, by the time I was 30, I had so much gray that I started using all over dye. That's 20 years ago and I'm still dyeing my hair. I always thought that by the time I got this old, I'd just let it go gray but now that I am this age, there's no way I'm letting myself go gray. MHO.

4. I've been coloring mine for some time now.
All of my gray is in big tufts at my temples. I'm naturally a dark brunette but always wanted auburn hair so, auburn it was. Now I'm getting to the point that I would like to go natural but my hair is so long, I don't think I'd have the patience to wait it out and I don't want to cut it so... I still color.

6. When I get gray hair, I will let you know.
For now, I am perfectly happy highlighting and lowlighting my dull, boring ash-blonde hair.

;)

I have no problem with coloring or not coloring your hair - to each her own. If you like your hair the way it is, leave it. If not, color it however you like it.

7. I dye my hair.
I have it done at a salon because it never looks as good when I do it, and I hate doing it. I started going gray in my twenties, so I'm very gray for someone in her mid-thirties.

8. I'm all for covering up the gray!
:)
I started going gray at 19. I've gone from very blonde to being a strawberry blonde. Not sure what color I'll do next but I'm having a heck of a lot of fun thinking about it!

11. There is a herb called Stinging Nettle, that helps to keep your hair from
going gray.

I use it, still have blond hair.

My Grandmother used it, never had gray hair.

There is nothing wrong with gray hair but I think using stinging nettle would be better using a dye.

28. Any health food type store or on the internet.
I go to Vitamin World myself.

You buy it in capsules, take one or two a day.

I have seen it reverse gray hair, the grayer the hair the longer it will take.

I started to use it for other reasons, the gray thing is just a add on.

work on?

I dye my greys (I went premature at 18) and it's a pain in the ass.

I would LOVE to solve it with a supplement! Tell me more...

From Clairol kinda honey blond to strawberry blond/gray.
After a week she said "Eff this."
Couldn't stand the roots.
She's honey blond again.

13. I color mine
I'm a natural blonde, and I started getting gray hairs in my mid 30s. Now, ten years later, My top is all salt and pepper but the back is a dull, lifeless mousy brown-grey. So yes, I color my hair and look about 10 years younger in the process. I think it's worth it to let a professional do it, at least initially, since they can match your skin tone and give you a more natural looking 'do. The last time I went was back in Nov. I recently touched up my roots with an organic dye. I'll probably go to the salon again in the summer.

When I get (very much) older, I'd like to look like Mery Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. I want that white, white hair.

others have beautiful gray hair.

17. I've stayed natural...
since the women at the place where I get my hair cut all marvel at the wonderful dark blonde/silver streaking. At long last, I finally have the streaks my friends used to tell me I should get. And it's free! Now the same friends tell me I should dye my hair.

:eyes:

I may color it one day, but right now I don't have the patience to sit there that long. And I'd be reluctant to do it myself in case the results were not good.

18. i let my color grow out last year so i could see what my natural hair color
had become, it ended up being about 50% grey and i lived with it for awhile. Looking back now i think if i had just gotten a different cut i would have stayed natural. Now i go every 10 weeks and get it cut and colored, the one bonus of all the greys is that when my hair is dyed those pieces look like they've been highlighted.

22. I don't dye my hair, but I don't rule it out down the road.
I've done colored cellophane rinses, around the holidays just for fun, but I don't do anything like that on a regular basis....yet. :D

I hear ya on the "multiplying"....it's almost getting exponential!

In my heart of hearts, I want to fully embrace getting older and all the accompanying side effects...but it's still pretty hard to do when you're staring at all that gray in the mirror and you feel so YOUNG.

Hmmm...

red no matter what color product I might put on it to cover gray.
I look awful with red hair.
I've been graying for many years, now, and it is a
beautiful cool color for my complexion.

26. Covering grey hair? Do you mean a hat?
Got to keep the head warm.

As far as dying hair goes, I'd rather not.

I've never liked dyed hair, except maybe temporarily for some theatrical thing.

27. I was born a blonde, and I intend to die a blonde.
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 08:07 PM by Shakespeare
My paternal grandmother cursed me with her prematurely gray genes--I've had streaks (expertly covered) since I was 25.

edited to add: I have a super-fair complexion, and if I went gray (or even streaky gray, as I am now), I would look completely washed out. NOT a good color for me.

29. I'm a guy with gray
and I'm keeping them all. I've seen too many men who use the Grecian Formula stuff, and they look like hell. Besides, I earned everyone of my gray hairs, so might as well show them off. FWIW, gray hair on a woman doesn't bother me one bit. My mother was prematurely gray, tried dying it, finally gave into it and looked great. Graywarrior is a hot number. Follow her lead. :-)

30. I've been dying my hair since I was 13 but
as soon as I start seeing grays I'll stop. I don't mind black roots but I do not like the look of white roots and dark hair. My hair grows quick and I'm too damn lazy to dye it every couple of weeks.

32. I wish mine would turn grey....
it would have to be flashier than my natural color.

My dear MIL has had gorgeous snow-white hair since her 30's. And my DH went grey during his 40's.

I like grey myself, but it's a personal decision...

Maybe you should try out a semi-permanent color if you want to cover it.
