What is, the best rivalry in
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 07:23 PM by petersond
sports? Any sport that is....I'm sitting here listening to some talking head who thinks the Duke/NC basketball rivalry is the best...

So, Loungers, what is the biggest sports rivalry?

For me(unbiased opinion, I'll try!)

1. Baseball-Yanks vs. Bosox...I just love seeing the interaction, although I don't like either team persay, but the entertainment value alone, is staggering sometimes.

2. Football-Dallas vs. Redskins

3. NBA-Lakers vs. Celtics...need I say more?

I'll stop there...but which rivalry, is the top one?

On edit:I think I wasn't clear, my choice, were beyond my regional bias...they in no way reflect what I think is the "best". for me the top rivarly is A's vs. Mariners...each time they meat up I have a severe dislike for the letter A!

5. You're probably correct.
Honestly, I think the same can be said, though, for most rivalries. Something along the lines of "all politics is local" ... all rivalries are local.

8. They all are, somewhat
although there are some teams that have a nationwide fan base, and some rivalries that suck people in beyond their normal fan base.

I think the Yanks-RedSux rivalry is a fairly decent example. Many baseball fans (of other teams) get involved in that one, especially if it's a playoff game.

10. I'd like to revise and extend my remarks ...
... to say I meant mostly college rivalries. I agree that some professional rivalries have a wider appeal, but I'm not sure many college rivalries extend as far beyond local/regional interest as the networks tell us they do.

unless said college rivalry happens to be a bowl game, or at least have bowl implications.

16. yes, but what is the best?
I tried not being biased in my OP, because imo, the best rivalry to me, is A's vs. Mariners!....or Seahawks vs. Chiefs/or Bronco's...

Which rivalry, is the best to you?

In my op, I was trying to generalize....basically my second favorite rivalry's, besides the ones I care about...:D

18. College football
I think Oklahoma/Texas rivalry is unique because it is played in front of a 50-50 crowd of crimson and burnt orange clad fans (who happen to hate each other). The Texas state fair adds to the festivity of the game.

Also, Army/Navy is a fierce rivalry.

24. OU/Nebraska has lost its luster
I've felt that it declined after Switzer left. After that OU wasn't really competitive until Stoops was hired.

The formation of the Big 12 cemented the demise of the rivalry.

I was at the '85 OU/Neb game and the end around play to Keith Jackson was the most exciting play I witnessed during my undergrad years at OU.

23. Bears-Packers is the main rivalry 'round here...
and especially now that there's two interleague series every year- Sox-Cubs is turning into more of an actual on-the-field rivalry.

I've read really horrible things about that match-up. NOt so much on the pitch but what happens before and after the game.
