Do any of you own anything made in the US?

Well, I have a Toyota Camry so I guess that qualifies.

3. 1996 Ford Contour
Good little car, still going strong. Our other two cars were made in Canada and Mexico.

I thought this Dell I'm on was, maybe, but no, it's Malaysia.

I see another one! A framed Charley Russell print we got in Great Falls.

6. We own a Mercury Sable wagon, which was indeed made in the US.
Almost all of my cosmetics and skin care products were made in the US. The ones that weren't were made in Europe (specifically EU countries). I have a wool coat that was made in the US in the late 80s, and I'm still getting a lot of use out of it. I also still have a Foot Fixer foot bath that I bought in 1990 and was made in the US---and it's still going strong.

15. My car, a Ford Focus,
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 02:14 PM by mycritters2
my shoes, everyday shoes--New Balance synthetic walking shoes
dress shoes--synthetic pumps by Natural Bridge, Capps Shoe Company, Lynchburg TN

my socks--Wigwam work socks, Sheboygan, WI

my pots and pans--Lodge cast iron, Pittsburg, Tennessee

my dishes--McCoy pottery, Roseville, OH inherited from my parents

My preaching robe--Murphy Robes, St. Petersburg, FL

Probably other things, too. I try to be careful about this. I buy a lot of clothes secondhand, some made off-shore, but at least my money doesn't support sweatshops directly.

Still, it's hard to avoid buying foreign goods. They're everywhere. Like, why does Kroger feel the need to sell apples from New Zealand?!! As if no one's raising apples in this country.

Buy local, buy union. That's what I try to do.

17. I didn't realize February was American Apple Season
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 02:25 PM by GirlinContempt
To be clear:
Apple season in North America is fall. You know, September, October, November.
Apple season in New Zealand is our 'winter/spring'. January to May.

People who want fresh produce year round have to expect they're going to get it from countries with different growing seasons.

or year round. Also, eating seasonally available foods is healthier, giving one a varied diet over time. Me, I buy local fruits and veggies seasonally, dry them and store them for use in winter.

Yet, somehow, I bought Granny Smiths from Southern Illinois, and Red Delicious from Michigan just last Saturday at the local Aldi.

For a look at the variety of apple growing seasons in the US, take a look-see:

http://www.usapple.org/consumers/appleguide/guide.cfm#braeburn

Here's an Illnois orchard that ships all winter. Next shipment, February 12:

We really don't need to be wasting fuel shipping foods from halfway around the world.

24. Isn't Michigan frozen?
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 03:16 PM by GirlinContempt
I don't doubt some places have them stored, but they aren't growing apples in Michigan in February. Further south, I'd buy that.
All northern locales I've lived in have local produce in season, and imported produce off season. Be it imported from Southern California, New Zealand, or where ever.
Seasonally available fruits and vegetables being healthier or not, I don't really care one way or another. People expect to find things in their grocery store in and out of season, and that means importing.

http://www.usapple.org/consumers/storage.cfm
I'd be interested to find a study that compares storage & chemical costs (and pollution) to transportation costs (and pollution).

25. I don't mind eating stored apples. Better that than wasting fuel.
And again, there are places in the south that have them fresh and ship them at a lot less expense, financial and otherwise, than shipping from offshore.

And people demanding things that must be shipped long distances is how we got this trade deficit. Americans are spoiled, and it's hurting our economy. We really don't need to ship apples from New Zealand.

It would be helpful if Americans stopped confusing what they need with what they want.

I even have old vintage stuff that say "Union Made." or LIGU (Ladies International Garment Union) A lot of vintage stuff also says made in USA.

Alas, you won't see any of those union made labels anymore.... :(

I really need to go to some of those "US made" websites and direct my purchases accordingly....

Most but not all of my hand tools, my switchblade, my Mag-Lite. I rent, so I didn't have a say in the appliances. I have a hideous gold-colored armchair from the '60s. I assume it was made in the US.

Sad, isn't it?

Car. Mercury Sable.

House. 1950's brick ranch.

Art in the house. Purchased from local artists.

Guitars. American made Fender strat. Also, a custom made hollowbody tele purchased from local luthier.

A guitar amplifier. Handwired Blues Pearl tube amplifier and one of the first production models.

Computer was custom configured and assembled by a local computer store.

I like to shop farmer's markets and buy locally grown fresh produce when it is available.

I have two dental crowns - both fashioned and made locally.

Gas logs in the fireplace. Manufactured locally.

Bird toys. Designed and assembled locally.

Several handmade quilts.

A handmade checkerboard.

Some handmade furniture - notably a small desk.

Stained glass fashioned by a local craftsman.

Glassware from a local factory.

I ***LOOK*** for opportunities to buy American made products - provided they are of good quality and reasonably priced. For the most part you can't find this stuff at any of the big box stores. But then I prefer not to patronize the big corporations.

edit for spelling.

27. Guns. Telescopes.
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 03:37 PM by Deep13
Marlin carbine, S&W revolvers, Ruger 0.22 pistols, various 0.22 rifles. Sig and Beretta pistols were made in Germany and Italy. Two Discovery brand Newtonian telescopes made in CA. One DIY (by the last owner) 5" f/12 refractor with D&G lenses. Televue 101 refractor. One scope with Discovery mirrors made in my adopted hometown because I made it.

I'm sure there are other do-dads around the house. My "antique" furniture. Some hand tools from Sears I got in the 1980s.

Car was made in Germany. Actually, the house was made here.

Almost forgot: two original Peter Max paintings.
