Why in the hell is snopes.com the end all be all
Absolutely no other source recieves nor warrants this blind faith. Besides a dictionary or thesaurus, we question everything. Think about it. We take everything with a grain of salt, television, radio, magazines, essays and even encyclopedia entries. Everything that is except SNOPES FRIGGIN DOT COM.
Why is that?

1. Do you have something specific in mind, or just a general

beef with snopes?

It's been more than a year since I peeked at snopes, but they seem to do a decent job of explaining why they draw the conclusions that they do--as well as being pretty quick to use the "unverifiable" category, meaning they don't seem to feel compelled to make judgement unless they have some justification for making it.

But any person or group can be swayed by mistaken evidence--snopes as well as anybody else. I was under the impreesion that they got a lot of feedback questioning there conclusions or offering other evidence.

2. Because they debunk RW bullshit like no one else does.
That's why.

4. Because they investigate these urban legends
And provide rationales for their conclusions.

If it were some guy with a website just saying "aww I think that's bullshit," it would be different.

5. Because they source everything that they say
If you'll notice, there's a bibliography at the bottom of every entry showing just exactly how and where they came to their conclusion.

7. I even question the dictionary and thesaurus. They were published by rich white men.

8. I use it all the time
Sick sick sick of stupid credulous BS emails from my otherwise intelligent friends warning me about rapists who use tapes of crying babies to lure women out of their house, promising that calling #745 will automatically summon the police to my broken-down car, asking for donations of postcards for dying children, or claiming that Barack Obama is secretly a mulim sleeper agent.

I have to send these idiots somewhere, and snopes.com is short, succinct, well-referenced and written in language they can understand. And usually right. Maybe if I were MIHOP I might dispute it as a good source, but for simple, easily-disproved rumors, it is easy and credible.

9. Snopes is the place where all the little lies are refuted...
... and the one big lie hangs over the place like a smothering fog: That we are rational and free.

Snopes is a high citadel of cultural imperialism.
