2. Yeah, but when school's close, parents have to stay home.
Sucks for those that are stuck working and trying to get stuff done.

6. Also sucks for those who don't get paid for
taking time off every time a school closes. I don't know how parents do it. I wsa the youngest girl so there were older siblings around when we didn't have school. It's not like they actively watched me and my younger brother but at least my mom wasn't breaking the law by not being there when school was cancelled..

18. Oh yes, we here in MD love to overreact...
One time when I was in high school, there was the threat of a "blizzard", so they closed schools for the day. And all it did was rain.

Did I get out of work today? Nooooooooooo. HMPH. At least with schools closed traffic was light, and the roads were fine.

here in the Atlanta area. And the shelves are cleaned out of bread and milk.

They close schools here for two inches of snow.

... because the temp. was expected to be in the teens. No snow, no ice, just cold temp. That's pretty lame.

maybe a late opening, lucky bastards...lol

When I was in 6th grade, we got a foot of snow. THEN we got a week off. I just think it's sad when they give kids the day off and all it does is rain...lmao.

Gotta love MD...especially AA county... :eyes:

We had an inch last week. Same thing. Schools closed. I stayed home from work because I knew even though I could get there, they wouldn't need me.
We had 2 patients out of 8-10 show up.

I lost some money, but it was a nice break. Of course, my kids are grown. :-)

32. When I was in 2nd grade in Arkansas, we had 4 inches of snow one day
and they didn't cancel school. But the only kids who made it were the ones from the immediate neighborhood-- there were 7 of us who made it to my class, out of 25. We played games all day. Then a few years later, there was an inch or two of snow, and the roads in town were passable, but the roads east of town, where the hills began, were worse, and a bus had an accident. So after that, they started canceling school if there was even just a threat of snow.

11. My children had Mon and Tues off because of cold weather. No snow.
It was tragically cold (-5 to an 8 degree high) but I've never seen that in my life. It's still just as cold today, but they all went back.

17. They did that once when I was a child many moons ago
It's probably because they can't properly heat the schools. That was why they did it here. Kinda funny though. We lived a few blocks away from the school (in Georgia) and my mom just bundles me up and sends me on my merry way to walk there just like every other day. A very kindly janitor at the school drove me home, saying I was the only one who turned up! We had only been in GA a couple of years - we moved from Missouri where it actually does get cold :)

Today and yesterday are just as bad, but they didn't cancel school. In fact, I think the wind is blowing harder today.

21. No, just MD snow paranoia
The schools catch crap either way. If they close and it turns out the snow stops they look bad, but if they don't close and a single school bus has problems the parents yell.

15. Lawsuits
At least in my area the Board of Ed is paranoid about being sued. They figure if it's the least bit slippery out that in the event of an accident. They will be sued by the parents for not closing school. And to think my cousin in Maine thought it was normal for the school bus to have chains on it.

16. I heard this yesterday, and I have to say I never knew it before: some of the bus
companies use a gel-type fuel, which freezes at the extreme cold temps we've been having (as low as -7). So, even though there's no real snow, they have to close schools because the buses won't start. And if you somehow managed to get them started, there is no guarantee that the fuel line won't freeze up while the buses are en route, and cause them to stall out in the middle of the road, suddenly and without warning. Our district is geographically very big and very rural. Having a bus stalled out on some back road with -7 temp could become a problem for the driver and the kids very quickly. So, I guess it's all for the best.

Although, my boss and I were laughing yesterday because when we were kids they NEVER called snow days - those schools were open and those buses ran no matter what! Kids today are such weenies! ;)

29. When I first moved to VA, I was absolutely shocked that the
school buses didn't have chains on them. That was standard issue in CT.

Then I found out that the macadam used to seal the roads isn't nearly as thick, so the chains would destroy the roads in no time.

In 1995, we had a blizzard here that shut down the schools for three weeks. Because of the buses. I didn't care. I only had one in kindergarten and I was pregnant, so it was easier for me, actually.

23. 7' of snow has fallen in parts of Oswego.
Now this is some serious snowfall. My son was going to school there two years ago and he said that the snow depths were unfathomable.

Lake Effect Lowers Boom on Oswego
by R News Staff
Published Feb 06, 2007

While snow has only been an occasional nuisance during Rochester’s bitter cold streak, parts of central New York have been buried.

Up to seven feet of lake effect snow covered parts of Oswego.

That is not a record. Parts of Oswego County measured twelve feet of snow just two years ago.

As of late Tuesday, the snow was beginning to taper off on Lake Ontario's eastern end.

And that has to be well-timed. Pretty much 4+ here to close schools if it stops well before the start of school.

26. A few inches shut down the university I teach at today
Having lived in Indiana and Boston before (where we had maybe a total of 4 snow days over something like 14 years total), it seems a bit weird, though I suspect it's because most of the faculty and staff don't live right in town...plowing is a bit slow even here in town, so I can just imagine how it must be in the outlying areas.

27. Minnesota: Land of stoic and stubborn Germans and...
Scandahoovians.

For my kids to have a snowday would mean we had two feet of snow, or a major ice storm, or *maybe* -30 below temps. My youngest son was out at the bus stop Monday morning when it was -17 with a -35 windchill.

About ten years ago, the then-Governor called a snowday because the windchill was -40 or so and he was concerned about kids waiting at bus stops. People, mostly parents, raised hell about it!
