I've been to Kauai twice, when I was 12 and when I was 17. It's kind of a fantasy of mine to have my honeymoon there, at some point in the indeterminate future when I actually get married. I can't think of a better place, honestly.

Kauai is so beautiful. I was there on my honeymoon 18 years ago. I hope to go back someday and take our kids. The one of the pictures of a mountain near the end, is that one called "Sleeping Giant?" I remember seeing a mountain when we were there that looked like a giant's profile laying on top called "Sleeping Giant."

...prepare yourself, if you haven't been to Kauai for 18 years. It's not loved to death yet, by any means, but they are not preventing growth either. In fact, one family gave a huge parcel of land (specifically to be preserved...between Kapaa and Hanalei) to the park service. Unfortunately, it was sold to highest bidder and they are building multi-million dollar homes on it. They also built a huge condo complex in Kapaa itself (this year), which has really upset the locals (because that is where they live)...and one of them told me it was built on sacred burial ground. Anyway, it is following the ways of the other islands...and, eventually (like everywhere in the U.S.) it, too, (sadly) will be completely over-developed. One of the things I would be very active in, if I did live there, would be trying to preserve open spaces. It's a hard battle to fight, but someone has to do it!

You know, my husband sees turtles (Hono) *every* *single* *time* we go to Hawaii. One woman told us it's because Hono is his guiding spirit! :-) I think my guiding spirit might be a butterfly...because I always see those!

57. Well, the Nene have made a bit of a comeback...

..considering there were about 25,000 before the arrival of Capt. Cook, and less than 30 birds (thirty) by 1951. It's sad, though, that the only place they live in the wild is the Big Island. :-(
