36. I have several items in my house right now made where I work
Which is in town. There are a couple other things that I could buy locally, but have not yet.
When I lived in the town that I grew up in, we reguarly had some snack foods and soda made in our home town. Our bathroom fixtures were made in town also. My grandparents also owned glass that was made in our home town.

37. I have St. Maries, Idaho's contribution to polite society

This is a Peet shoe dryer. There is none other like it in the world. Everyone here needs one.

The Peet shoe dryer was invented by Gene Peet, a North Idaho electrician who got tired of having to own five pairs of boots if he wanted to work outside in the winter. Before he invented this weird-ass thing, a logger had a few choices when it came to having dry footwear--understand that logging boots are made from very thick leather. He could put the boots near a fire, but that tends to ruin a pair of $150 boots quick. He could allow the boots to air-dry, which takes a week. He could apply a waterproofer like Sno-seal, but that shit almost never works. Or he could just suffer with wet boots.

The other shoe dryers on the market are little more than glorified hair dryers. The damage they can inflict on your shoes is phenomenal.

The Peet dryer is a little different. It works by convection. There are vents in the back of the unit, and 20-watt heaters in the bases of the two upright pipes. You plug the dryer in and warm air will gently waft its way through the pipes, past the little foot-shaped forms on the ends of the pipes, and into your boots. It won't damage your boots, which is more than I can say for any other method.

While it's gentle, it's still effective: you can soak a pair of boots in water for an hour, pull them out, shake off the excess water and put them on your Peet shoe dryer, and the boots will be completely dry in the morning.

Also remember when I said Sno-seal "almost" never works? If you put your shoes on a Peet Shoe Dryer for about six hours, they'll be warm enough to accept the Sno-seal.

The Peet Shoe Dryer is made in an abandoned Safeway store in St. Maries, Idaho, by the six native Idahoans who helped Mr. Peet found the company. Parts are not available but they're not really needed--my father's Peet shoe dryer is 35 years old and dries his shoes every day, and mine is 25 years old and still going strong. It contains the same high-quality parts as it always did--which consist of the plastic casting, two pieces of folded nichrome metal, four resistors and a power cord.

It's just a great product. Get one. They're available all over the Internets for about $45--which is less than I paid for mine 25 years ago.
