1. How many beverage combinations are there on the Starbucks menu?
You didn't say it had to be a reasonable question.

4. No
My boss says it's 50,000. I think she's full of it. I think her evil corporatist overlords in Seattle told her it was 50K.

12. My college roommate was in Graphic Design, but back then it was done
with chisels and rocks. You'll probably learn some different techniques.

14. not to rain on your parade or anything, but
if the point is to be gainfully employed, you might want to do a little research on the job market for graphic designers. times are hard now that everyone and their brother has photoshop on their pc.

16. The same can be said for ANY field...
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 07:23 PM by HypnoToad
We're all in the same boat.

And I'd rather keep my mind on things other than suicide, thank you all the same... but if you're going to tell me which fields are dead, will you tell me which ones are opening up? Save for the military, I'll enlist (or attempt to) if I have to.

Besides, that "B" degree will at least get me a minimum wage job down the road. No matter if I have all the experience in a field, many employers don't give jack shit unless one owns a piece of parchment... even if the employee is otherwise a total dunderhead, the paper means more to Manager Microcephalic than experience or anything else.

Oh, everyone has a PC too. Hasn't stopped people from using PC repair services either...

17. hey, i'm just talking as someone who went to a top flight
art school. for that i am rewarded with a $500/month studio rent, and no hope of any real money, ever. it does stave off my suicidal tendencies, but...
i am pretty sure that a bfa is worth less than nothing. lotta mfa's out there doing catalog layouts. i guess there is a certain amount of generic, a degree is a degree.
don't get me wrong. college is good. you might find something that really winds your watch there. but getting paid for any kind of art related thing is a rare, rare thing.

20. Thank you.

Your grounding is venerable, but I feel I've got to try this. The courses I eventually take will include the gamut, from design to photojournalism.

But I've got to live to work. Working to live, as I am right now, compels the worst in me. But going back to school will be something to work for.

I will also look up science and other degrees as well... but it microbiologists can't get a job these days, it seems anything one does is not guaranteed. I'd rather enjoy life while I can, even if I say it's a waste at the end. I honestly don't know what to think, but if my boss got his position from a degree that's not related, but because it's a degree, that means the same applies for anybody.

23. true dat. a degree shows you can earn a degree.
i understand the need- ya gotta move forward, or you will just sink in to the mud.

and as soon as al is re-elected, he will get to work on rebuilding the middle class.
where are you looking to go?

29. Where am I looking to go?
Anywhere so I can feel happy for a while.

Not a bar, obviously - no booze or drugs or people who get intoxicated and want to bonk all night long... or at least until they pass out from a hangover...

35. is there a community/2 year college near you?
that is an awesome place to get started. not a lot of money, and mostly real serious folks. no rooms full of 18 year old space cadets. pretty practical curriculum, also.
most colleges will accept a 2 year degree in toto, and not make you jump through a lot of freshman hoops. and it will get you a lot of consideration from the admission folks. most colleges like older students, anyway.

good luck.

32. We all work.
We all pay bills.
We all drive.
We all battle with the utility company.
We all battle with the bank.
We all battle with coworkers.

There is nothing wrong with having some peace. Some have spouses, lovers, concubines, and so on. What's wrong with doing what one loves when possible, and I don't mean spouses, lovers, concubines, and so on?

Especially when a hobby or interest can be tooled for somebody else's vision. That is still work.

That's why I'm hard pressed to do many things on an entrepreneurial level; it wouldn't be work anymore.

15. Good for you!!
You do know it's a lot easier going back, don't you?

You actually GO to class AND pay attention (because you're not hung over or sleepy from 'crammin' &/or partying all night!). You do your homework and the prof thinks you're a genius because you can answer in complete sentences instead of monosyllables.

Anyways - way to go! I can't wait to hear all about it!

25. Indeed.
the Buddhists have a term called "Right Livelihood": that which brings true benefit to oneself and/or others.

Doing what one loves is definitely being in alignment with one's Right Livelihood.

You should get CS degree. Everyone in the world needs a CS degree.... It would be required by law.

Having thought about it and the job market, et cetera, what you said does make sense; anything from a cereal box would be just as relevant according to the executive suits. :)
