HELP! Dentist dilemma: Incisor tooth bonded in 10/06 is still VERY sensitive!
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 10:03 AM by Radio_Lady
The bonding replaced other dental work done thirty years ago! That filling was crumbling. There was no sensitivity then and the dentist said there was no decay.

The tooth was sensitive almost immediately to cold and pressure at a low level.

I went back to the dentist a week later and he tried a yellow waxy desensitizer which washed right off. It was supposed to fill the dentin tubules, but it didn't work at all. I've also tried over the counter Orajel products and with mixed results.

Now, the dentist wants to remove the filling tomorrow.

What could this be? I guess some people are allergic to the bonding resins, but I've never had any problems with bonding materials.

Anyone information you can share TODAY would be gratefully appreciated.

Is there a website forum for tooth problems???

1. Sorry, haven't had anything like that...luckily!
But, I'll give this a kick in case someone else has.

Hope it gets better soon! :hi:

3. Whenever I get a crown
that tooth is sensitive for a while. My dentist gives me a prescription toothpaste that works wonders on sensitivity. Think Sensodyne on steroids. ;)

Did he replace an amalgam (metal) filling with the newer tooth-looking stuff? I noticed a bit of sensitivity when a couple of old metal fillings were replaced with that stuff, but it went away. Maybe that's the problem?

 RL. Dentist visits aren't very fun for me either.

5. I've been using Sensodyne for years, as well as Gel-Kam which is
a flouride rinse with analgesic properties. I also have gone through an OTC product from Orajel -- advertised as an advanced tooth desensitizer that "relieves painful sensitivity up to one month." Suffice it to say that the product did not live up to expectations.

The bonding the doctor did in October 2006 was a replacement for another bonding in that tooth which was 30 years old and crumbling at the edges. The tooth was fine for years with the older filling!

Thanks for posting and commisurating...

I'll be in the chair at 9 AM Wednesday. Please send a good thought or two.

In peace,

Radio Lady

4. Ouch
Tooth pain is one of the worst pains I think. I've had problems with generalized tooth sensitivity (to hot, cold, sweet, etc) and that responds somewhat to use of Sensodyne toothpaste. I've also had the kind of sensitivty I think you're describing -- my dentist has told me this is from having work done that irritates the root. I've had to have root canal on 2 teeth but I've also had others that eventually calmed down and stopped aching after a couple weeks or so. Good idea to see the dentist. Hope s/he gets to the bottom of it and you feel better soon.

6. Good to hear your story, Connonym. Maybe I should try to tough it out a bit longer.
But it's been since October that I've had to contend with this.
