1. I know they at least tried pot...
Beyond that, I have no idea. They were partiers during the 70's so, who knows.

2. My mom actually asked my what pot was like.
We were visiting relatives in Texas when I was in high school and one of my cousins was a big pothead. We were with an uncle (not his father) and my cousin told our uncle that we were stoned and needed to stop at Jack in the Box for some burgers. Of course, my uncle told my Mom.

I found out later that my aunt smoked pot and offered my Mom and Dad some. My mom said she was curious but didn't try it.

Too bad -- doing bong hits with Mom could have been interesting!

5. that's a great story
kinda funny to imagine straight-laced parents getting stoned. I always knew my parents had done pot, but I recently asked my MIL and she laughed at the idea.

4. Both of them denied it
My father said that he never got drunk or high and neither should I. He was even a rock musician.
My mother also denies ever doing drugs but admits that she road in the same car with a good friend who would smoke pot on the way to school. My father, who is divorced from my mother, said that she was probably lying about never trying it.

6. No, but my mom asked me to score some pot for my Dad.
I am sure they never tried anything but had a conversation in the hospital with my mom when my dad was in for a slight complication from lung cancer. Now my 80 year old mom is a fundy, not born again but very religious. She is also a rushbot, bushie who's hero is Spiro Agnew.

She said he had no appetite and I mentioned that some people had used pot to help that. She told me that it was a great comfort to my sister when she was dying from breast cancer and asked me if I knew where to get some so he could try it when he got home. Unfortunately he never made it home again.

It was just so shocking and out of character tho, even under the circumstances I found it very funny.

7. Never bothered because I kinda figured it out on my own
My mom most likely never did anything because she didn't really party in college. My dad most likely smoked pot a few times but wasn't very into it. I don't think he did any other drugs. He always tells me that it was okay to do it back when he was in college but that I shouldn't because of the drug war. I can't argue with that logic, but it's pretty hard to get caught if you're doing it in someone's house.

8. my father smoked weed on a regular basis well into my adulthood.
My mom said she tried it but didn't like it. I think that and drinking were the only things.

9. I had to put "other"
My mom recently came right out and told me she tried pot, 20 years ago, when she was in her early 60's. She was being treated for Hodgkin's, and her doc gave her some to try to help the nausea. She didn't like it and it didn't work anyway.

BTW, she's been free and clear ever since, still going like crazy.

10. um, yes, legal ones
I'm a boomer and my mom grew up in the depression, and had a serious downer habit, all legal, back when they had to invent tranks to keep the suburban housewives quiet.

She moved on to much heavier stuff that they stopped making because it was so dangerous -- like Placidyl, recently referred to in an article about William Rehnquist's prescription drug habit.

There are probably lots of us that had moms who were depressed in the 60s and took lots of valium because they couldn't be a princess and eat bonbons in a big house.
I'm baffled about it.

11. No mystery in my house--they did everything out in the open.
It was standard operating procedure. My mom used to tell stories that started, "So I was at the Ozark Music Fest and we were all tripping when. . ." I was born in '71 and my parents were very into that post-hippie drug culture. It took all the allure out of it for me though, so I guess in the long run it wasn't as detrimental as one would think.

They did absolutely nothing else.

At least, that's the official story. 'Tis impermissible to question it.

16. No, and I'm 100% sure they never did.

Unless you include alcohol and caffeine as drugs, then they did, but that's all.

17. Never had to ask. Is alcohol a drug?
My mother was a drunk for most of my life. Sweet, irresponsible and should never have had kids. She was happiest working. My Dad drank almost as much when I was young then cut way down when he realized that his wife had no idea where her kids were most times. We ran wild. It was fun, except for having no one who made sure you had sox or underware or clean clothes to wear to school, life was free. Then my Dad found out.

19. Never asked, but if either one of them did it would have been Mom.
I was throwing back a few with my Dad once and the subject came up once. He said that if he knew then what he knows now he would have tried pot when he was younger. He seemed sincere, so I am guessing he never did anything.

Or, maybe he did everything but pot.

20. Just a note, those who answered with the number 2 answer have parents that are lying to them...
and those who think their parents DIDN'T try drugs are optimists at best. :)

By the way, my Mom's experience with pot was when I was over at my Grandma's and one of my Mom's neighbor's gave her some. She passed out for 12 hours or so, just fell asleep. My dad drinks Crown Royal, it takes him like a year to finish off a fifth of it.

21. i put other: I don't know if i think so or not...
Mom's sibs were/are all STILL old hippies, some of whom still 'grow their own'...
they've told me every other incriminating thing about mom that they could think of (including her 6-week marriage to someone before dad, etc...), so i'm sure that they would have let the beans spill on that, too, if any of them had any idea.

Yay for my aunts and uncle... keepers of embarrassing truths.

Dad was career Air Force, and he had a glaring alcohol problem up until i was 8 or so (after he'd retired from the AF)... my mom throwing him out for a week straightened him out 'til the day he died (17 years later). I can't picture him doing anything stronger, frankly.

If he was still alive, i think i would ask him, though. Unlike the relationship i have with mom (stilted at best... some bad history there), he and i could talk about anything. Heck, he's still the only one in my extended family who had seen all of my tattoos; Mom hates them, and kept trying to pressure him to have his one small one (a smiling devil face on his chest) removed. I think she'd still shit kittens if i ever showed up on the doorstep in a tank-top, and i've had all of them for 15+ yrs.

22. They said no, but dad was lying
I know my dad smoked pot. When we were little kids, he would go down by the creek to "light the teenagers' cigarettes", something mom and he would argue about. He said that if he was nice to them, they would leave his kids alone, which did seem to work. The punks were always nice to us, but he was getting high with them. We were not stupid.

When I was about 22, I had Christmas dinner with my dad the first X-mas after he and my mom divorced. He was really drunk, and pulled out a joint and said "look what I have". I told him, cool, light it up, let's party. He wouldn't, because I was his daugher (I knew he wouldn't when I challenged him to do so). He later gave me a hash pipe from India as a gift. He stopped drinking about 10 years ago and would never do such things now.

My mom never drank more than two drinks, and two vodka gimlets make her dizzy. She's never done any drugs that weren't prescribed for her. She is the ultimate codependent, however.

30. Considering the way my parents freaked out at a neighbor's "pot party"
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 04:19 PM by Strawman
Umm. No. I'm certain they never tried any recreational drugs.

It was a neighbor down the street's party and someone lit up a joint. Suddenly it became the infamous "pot party" in family lore. My parents left immediately in fear and horror lest they succumb to reefer madness.

My parent's aren't generally uptight like that, but when it comes to drugs, they have ideas right out of a 1950's high school film strip.

But honestly, personally, I don't even like the idea of adult kids smoking pot with adult parents. I had a gf like that. Too often those parents seem too worried about being cool and being the kid's buddy and not good parents. At least that's how it seems to me. I'm sure that's not always the case, but as a matter or personal taste, I like my parents a little on the dorky side.
