Here in the East with much mild winter weather we have been blessed.

Global warming has caused a great debate.
This mild winter makes it seem just great.

On this Groundhog Day we think of one thing.
Will we have winter or will we have spring?

On Gobbler's Knob I see no shadow today.
I predict that early spring is on the way.

Groundhog Day was first declared and recognized in Punxsutawney, PA in 1886. In the summer of 1899 a half dozen Punxsutawney citizens, the nucleus of the "Groundhog Club" first gathered on a nearby mountain and ate groundhog. In succeeding years thousands flocked to the "Home of the Groundhog" to participate in this end-of-summer feast. The accompanying publicity propelled the Groundhog Club to national prominence. The Club made their annual Feb. 2nd treks to Gobblers Knob starting in 1906.
