Thoughts On Psychic Phenemon
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 12:45 AM by Southpawkicker
I'm a skepic about them

I seem to have left some details out of this post, duh

okay, what are your thoughts on psychic phenomena?

Are they the thinking threads of paranoids?

Are they real?

Are they strung together events out of wishful thinking?

Just what are they?

13. There are a lot of things we can't explain
or prove scientifically. But we often don't like to acknowledge their existence unless we can give an explanation.

Maybe that's the wisest course. Since we can't explain it, we can't exactly call ourselves experts on such phenomena.

but to others who've experienced it, it's real & it changes your perception on many things. I had it happen when my dad died so I'm a true believer.

Don't discount it as being silly, SPK.

5. I used to be agnostic but not an atheist because of "occurrences".
All my life I have had very clear prophetic dreams that are distinct from my normal ones. I also have accurately "read" people, both good and bad. It happens so often that I've never questioned my intuition, and could not explain how I have known certain things. It's not something that I can turn on or off, but it's is a skill that has made it's self useful at many of my life's crossroads. I am a believer.

17. None of the above
referring to receiving an image that unknown to me had been a frightening experience to a good friend of mine earlier in the day.

Sort of a strange reception of an image that had no emotion attached to it for me, and I interwove it in my conversation with some patients in a group session at the hospital. Then a couple of hours later this friend is panicked and tells me a story about a "white van" that had been outside her house this morning going back and forth. Disappeared, then reappeared after she went to work and her kids called her. She found the van, got a license plate, etc. called pokey police who got there an hour later.

My image? White vans and i told a story about white vans to the patients. It just came into my head.

whacked? psychic? coincidence? what?

All I know is I was talking to the group and a chance to use an example of a story about paranoia came up and the white van story popped into my head. Hadn't thought about it for a long time. There it was.

Then there she was telling me her story about white vans.

 I don't know what it is. Nothing? Something?

30. well, a couple things simple, flat, and belief systems based...
neuro guys would point out the brain is a system of synapse just firing happily away and from time to time thoughts and patterns shift or some receptor not so much as mis-fires but conducts instead, or conveys in a indeterminate fashion and voila! or is it: Eureka! i forget; and while i think i understand what they are saying, appreciating their take on the matter...i am left somehow unsatisfied, and perhaps that is my true lot in life but then...

yogi', and buddha, and jesus et al; say we are creatures of spirit: and while on the subject it is further said that the spirit precedes the flesh...here's one for you = i think that de jevu is a recollection from your spirit having done just that; preceded your flesh so...there that is,

we are clearly in tune with many around us, well...some of us are ;), as such we are able to be likened to attenea (i.e. ants know when other ants are troubled two hills over)...but that may not even need to be a phenomena per se, that may just be the way it is :)

phenomena

phe·nom·e·non /fɪˈnɒməˌnɒn, -nən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation Pronunciation Key - Show 1. a fact, occurrence, or circumstance observed or observable: to study the phenomena of nature.
2. something that is impressive or extraordinary.
3. a remarkable or exceptional person; prodigy; wonder.
4. Philosophy. a. an appearance or immediate object of awareness in experience.
b. Kantianism. a thing as it appears to and is constructed by the mind, as distinguished from a noumenon, or thing-in-itself.

18. I'm very intuitive, but...
I don't believe in psychic phenomena.

I've taken "Psychic Development" classes. My experience was that there are certain energy areas in the body and, perhaps, surrounding the body, but I don't think it goes much beyond that. IMHO. The class even tried "Psychic Housecleaning" (of negative energy or spirits). It was pretty silly.

When it comes down to it, I don't really care much, one way or the other. It's the sort of thing that is so subjective and romantic.

31. I'm Intuitive Too
and make my living using intuition to some degree.

I also believe in the scientific world. Psychic phenomena don't register there usually for me.

I do believe in the energy field or aura. I don't know how far reaching it's influence can be or if there are conduits that allow for energy to travel with information for another aura somehow.

I do believe that the body electric is able to affect changes in it's environment by the use of mere thought.

33. "...body electric is able to effect changes.."
That has been my experience, when I've put the energy into it.

But, I don't know if that is truly a result of energy, or a mental "pep talk."

40. I never expect to be able to change others....
however, I have been able to, in a trance state, focus my energy to make very significant changes in my life. Like dominos falling in a chain reaction.

I also used to read Tarot cards and my last reading for myself (which is a "no-no") predicted my much-hoped-for first pregnancy. (Actually, I WAS pregnant, but didn't know it yet.)

And, I used to consult the I Ching and am now happy about having followed "its" advice on a number of occasions.

Still, I can't prove that there was anything supernatural about any of it. There are other explanations....

I expect these are questions I will mull over some day way off in the future, when I have a lot more time on my hands...:freak:

Now, Southpaw, I am off to bed.

45. Nor Do I
however there does seem to be an effect on others when one is "happy" that goes beyond the obvious. I suspect the unconscious mind, and possibly energy fields being affected by negative moods. I think we are likely perceptive of others energy and things they give off at an unconscious level.

Like, "be aware of your leg", and you for a moment think about your leg when you probably weren't before unless there was something bothering you. Subtle things that we are generally unaware of may be what gives off information to others.

Tarot cards a "no no", I've never been interested in them.

39. I'll tell you what happened with my Dad....
and why it was way more than intuition. If there's another explanation for it, I don't know what it would be.

I was living in LA and got a call that my Dad in Indiana had collapsed with a stroke or something... we didn't know at the time, but knew it was very serious and I knew I had to get home right away. There were no direct flights from LA to Indiana so I had an hour layover in Nashville which made it about a 6 hr trip.

A couple hours into the flight, I had an overwhelming sensation that I can't even begin to explain. I didn't "hear" him but it was like I felt him telling me he had to go and saying goodbye. There was a part of me that couldn't believe it and another part of me that just knew. I looked down at my watch to make sure I noted the time and it was 3:30. When I arrived in Nashville for my layover, I didn't even call home because I knew he was gone.

My mom was waiting for me when I got off the plane and she just shook her head, like no, you didn't make it in time and when I asked her what time, she said 3:30. I found out later that he actually died at 3:40 but, all day he'd been thrashing around and incoherent. At 3:30 he sat up and got very still, then quietly laid back down and died 10 min later.

I used to not be able to tell this story without sobbing uncontrollably but it's been 18 yrs now and I get a lot of comfort from it...knowing that he was able to tell me goodbye and we did connect. I know that in my heart and if someone chooses not to believe me, it doesn't bother me. That's why I say until you actually experience it, it's not something you can easily imagine.

24. It all depends, man
I've had some really strange experiences along those lines ... for the most part they have given me more questions than answers. To cut to the chase, I think there are "psychic phenomena" of the kind you describe above, but I am insufficiently skilled to determine which are valid and which are crap.

If you are like me, such phenomena are likely to occur at moments when major things are at stake and some positive action is required, and I am quite confused as to what the right course of action might be.

maybe it has to do with who I felt connected to, and that is where the "wishful thinking" angle comes in. Am I just wishing that I were connected to her in such a unique way? Or is there something real to this?

that question! I'm still trying to recover from the pheromonal overload I experienced this afternoon. Or whatever it was. In my current state I am prone to say "Yeah, man. It was real."

But my head is still reeling and I've had a few beers. And, anyway, it is unimportant. What is important is how you feel about her and how she feels about you. If those two things really line up, your choices narrow pretty quickly.

49. One night...
sitting near the house I grew up in, a friend turned around and stared at the house across the street. She asked me: "Who's Edith?". My friend had sensed a person named Edith connected to that house. I didn't know any Edith. I asked my mother soon after, and it turns out there was an Edith, who was the sister of the former occupant of the house across the street from my childhood home. Edith was a friend of my mother, more so than her sister. Edith had died two years before this incident.

Are you saying you are skeptical, or you rule out the possibility altogether, and don't want to hear any opinions to the contrary? I can't explain how it happened, any more than I can explain the true nature of gravity. I just know that I stick to the planet pretty well, and I know that thoughts don't need people to exist. Oh, and I remember being told that we use less than 10% of our brains. Maybe the other 90% holds the key.

Bill
