Rap lyrics help convict Richmond teen of two murders

A Richmond teenager convicted of a double murder may have sealed his fate with a rap song he wrote.

There was no physical evidence linking the teen to the crime, but in the end, a violent rap song he wrote from behind bars appears to have had a strong effect on the jury.

“There might not have been any DNA, but there was enough from his rap song alone,” said Kathy Rowe. “His letters, his attitude, all of that showed his guilt.”

In the song, Staton said, “I was one of the (blanks) that did it.”

The defense argued it was nothing more than artistic expression, but prosecutors disagreed.

“If you read the rap carefully and he references his rank getting up, I think Mr. Staton sees this as a notch, so to speak,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Herring. “I think he’s proud of everything, he’s proud of his words, he’s proud of his actions.”
