Serious evidence: Big Bird's nest was destroyed on 9/11. I'm not kidding--it was a serious and controversial episode, in which Gordon helped to comfort Big Bird but ultimately had to acknowledge that sometimes people do bad things.

Lighthearted evidence: In The Muppet Movie, Kermit and Fozzie pass Big Bird on the road and offer him a lift. "No thanks," he says. "I'm on my way to New York to break into Public Television." Sure, that doesn't mean that Sesame Street itself was based in NYC, but I'm not personally aware of evidence to the contrary (though there may indeed be plenty of it).
