Bill opens bars to dogs -- but some pooh-pooh lawmaker's idea
Monday, January 29, 2007

By MELISSA SANTOS
P-I REPORTER

OLYMPIA -- Having man's best friend join you for a drink may no longer be a health violation if one canine-loving legislator has anything to do with it.

Sen. Ken Jacobsen, D-Seattle, has introduced a bill that would allow dogs in bars.

Dan DeLong / P-I
Frank and Elicia Tamburine of Leschi enjoy dinner with their dog Trader Pup, a 10-month-old American Eskimo dog, at a restaurant that allows dogs.

The dogs would have to be well-behaved and on a leash, but the bill places no other restrictions on them appearing at local watering holes.

Jacobsen said many people already bring their dogs to bars, and it makes for a more pleasant social environment.

"When I'm having a beer, I like seeing other people's dogs," he said. "I laugh when I say this, but having dogs in the bar and the pub as far as I'm concerned makes it a more human place."

The state Department of Health does not allow live animals, besides service animals, to enter establishments that serve food. Neither does any other health department in the nation.

5. You've got to be kidding.
Some dogs smell and their owners are oblivious. In fact I've never met a dog that didn't smell; it's just a matter of degree. Why don't we let cats and chickens roam the restaurants too? Geez. Back to the middle ages.

9. Can't argue with that.
But I'm a cat person. Still, I don't want to see them in restaurants... my cat will hop on the table and eat from people's plates if he's not stopped (he is). He did this as a youngster when he had worms, too. :puke:

the place - in Sweden and Germany. Despite what somebody posted above, I did not find what you say to be true. Maybe the exceptions are Munich and Stockholm? I do recall very distinctly walking on the streets of Paris during my honeymoon seventeen years ago, and vowing never to return because there was SO MUCH dogshit everywhere you looked. I've been told that this problem has since been corrected. I'll tell you where there ara lot of dogs: in the Yucatan. The small, short-haired, good-natured beasts are running everywhere on the streets and there appears to be no attempt on the part of owners to keep them inside their tiny cinderclock homes. However I never found myself in the presence of a dog while eating at a restaurant. The dogs are shy.

I fully understand that dog lovers might find my position on this question to be offensive. Oh well.

dogs in bars there were pretty common. As long as they were on a leash and under control, no problem.

I did see the occasional patron "asked" to leave when their dog became noisy, but it was usually no big deal.

19. I'm not exactly opposed to this law, but
I can see the potential for this to be an absolute nightmare. I'm not sure most places would just start allowing pets anyway due to liability issues. If everyone with dogs were responsible, I would think it was pretty cool. It's the irresponsible assholes who ruin it for everyone else. The ones who think their Max is special and doesn't need a leash like other dogs because he wouldn't hurt a fly, for example. Or the ones who won't clean up after their dogs. Yeah, cleanup in isle six is going to be real fun for the employees, if someone hasn't already slipped and broke their neck first.

25. I'd be happy if they'd just allow them in the public park
At a time when more and more parks and beaches are outlawing dogs, they're trying to pass a bill to let them inside bars?

Maybe some dogs prefer bars to the outdoors but all mine liked to play outside and it's getting very difficult to find places where they can.

Backwards. Nothing against dogs - I don't care if they're in bars or not. I just wish people would make up their minds.

29. I would never go to a bar that allowed dogs.
But, they certainly have the right to have a dog-fan-dedicated bar. I see no problem with it. Sounds gross and disgusting to me, but then, I'm not a dog fan so I'm biased.

But why not? I think for the dog owners it would be pretty cool. And what they should do is put in a dog kennel/pen area for the dogs to play with each other and run around in - that could make "Honey, I'm taking the dog out for a walk" into a whole new direction. :-)

30. There are several bars here that I go to where dogs
hang out (not necessarily legally, not sure about the law). They are always very well behaved and everyone is happy to see them. I love bar dogs. You don't like dogs? Go find another bar, there's millions of 'em. 'Side's which, the bars where I have seen dogs seem to have a select crowd where none of the people mind having a dog around (since they all have dogs anyway). It's not like people are going to walk into a bar and be in the middle of a dog show for gawd's sake. Most likely there will be 1 or 2 dogs. I've never heard of European bars or cafes being inundated with dogs. A bar is also a far cry from walking into a 4 star french restaurant (or even a Bob Evans or Hooter's).

I avoid the type of bar and restaurant where the women and men tend to wear cologne's and perfumes (think bars that cater to wealthy young professionals, 40+ middle to upper class, nightclubby type establishments, etc) because I'm allergic to them. I don't ask them to change themselves to accommodate my modest restrictions, that would be assinine.

34. Seeing-eye dogs, maybe...
But why? People go to bars to pick up other people for sexual liaisons. How the hell can a dog help? Bark once for 'no' and twice for 'oh yeah!'?!

How about people allergic to dogs; will they like this idiot scheme to turn bars into zoos to go through?

Some people are morbidly terrified of dogs. Forgive me if I call the guy who introduced this bill a glib, generalizing cretin for thinking that. May as well allow smoking in bars too while we're at it...

What if some guys want to pick the dog up for a liaison instead? :scared:

38. Dogs
Dogs are allowed in restaurants in France. I like dogs. I like cats. I love animals.

...and what kind of weird-o pervert, inhibited nut-case would complain about breastfeeding?

I live in Austin. It's one of the only cities in the US where women can legally go topless. Google it if you don't believe me. We even have a nude beach at one of our lakes. The human body is a nice thing and so is the naked human body.

Babies breastfeeding is natural and wonderful and part of being alive on the earth. Anyone who would complain about that needs some shrink time.

I don't mind kids in restaurants as long as they are somewhat behaved.

The only thing on the list that bothers me are cell phones. I have decided that people who talk on those all the time need someone constantly reassuring them that they really exist.

45. I would have no problem with this as long as the dogs were well
behaved and leashed. I would really enjoy something like this because I'm single but don't like to go out alone. Being able to take my dog with me to a bar would probably improve my social life. We could stop in for a drink when we go for a walk. I don't think I'd like to see them at a dining establishment, but it wouldn't bother me to see them at a bar as long as they weren't being a nuisance.
