I guess i won't be buying a car from Roy
So i'm looking for a VW Beetle convertible and i drive over to the local dealer and they don't have what i'm looking for, i have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice, the common denominator is that all 3 must have a manual transmission, thats it. So i tell Roy (salesperson) the choices and tell him to call me when he has one or all of the 3 because i will buy one. "No problem, will do, you'll be hearing from me." Ok great. In the past 10 days Roy has called me 3 times, last time was this morning, "Hey Kim i have a great deal on the car you want except---it's an automanual transmission" "Hey Roy you're right that is a great deal for someone who wants an automatic but since i specifically told you i wanted a manual it's not a great deal for me"

So then he says "We don't sell manual transmissions to women"

"What, is that a vw policy or something, does VW think women are incapable of driving a car with a manual transmission?"

ok i know what Roy meant, he meant not many women buy cars with manual transmissions from him--i thinks thats what he meant.

"Oh no thats not a policy as far as i know it's just that automatics are easier to drive"

"Ok ROY so what are you trying to say"

"No you have me all wrong, most women don't feel like fiddling with a manual, thats all"

"Ok ROY thanks for clearing that up for me"

"No problem Kim, so are you interested in the car?"

"No ROY i'm not"

"So how about an EOS, have you seen them, nice, 6 speed automatic tranmission with overdrive!"

"Roy, gotta go now, buh-bye"

1. Roy's an asshole
The "great secret" of our family was that our ma could drive the manual Jeep better than our dad. :D She was very gracious about her abilities.

I taught my husband how to drive a manual and his friends were shocked, husbands friends also tend to be asshats from time to time.

3. Did you call Roy's boss yet?
Definitely let them know that this idiot is costing them money. They need to know that.

and see it for himself to believe it

AND in the U.K. they even drive manual on the wrong side!!! That will probably blow his mind though, not sure we can risk that

5. That's weird - my wife drives my stick all the time
She even makes engine noises when she 'shifts'.

Also, she owned a manual transmission automobile for years, and drove it just fine...

12. Car dealers will say absolutely anything to make a sale
They'll lie and claim that certain features, colors, models, etc. don't exist or are being discontinued or cost more, etc. All they want to do is sell the car that's on the lot. I bet if Roy had had a manual in stock, he would have sold it to you without a whimper. What a jerk...

9. I'm a woman who drives a manual - always have
My sister has always driven a manual. My friend Lea drives a manual. My friend Charron drives a manual. My daughter drives a manual. My cousin Meri drives a manual. My landlady drives a manual. My (female) doctor drives a manual.

What is there about driving a manual that Roy thinks is so difficult for a woman to master? What is it that makes it somehow easier for men (since that seems to be what he's implying)?

Oh, and by the way, my boyfriend drives an automatic.

13. This is why I buy my cars in Vermont
Though I live in California. I have a friend in Vermont who is a car salesman. In over 20 years of buying cars from him, he's never screwed me over. In addition, he's a good liberal who was probably in DC over the weekend and a great guy. I will travel 3000 miles to give him a sale because I trust him.

14. The opposite happened to a friend of mine.
Some years ago, she was trying to buy a particular make of car. The idiot salesman kept trying to sell her a manual. My friend protested that she didn't know how to drive manual, and that she wanted automatic. The guy said he'd teach her to drive stick if she'd just buy the car.

She went to a different dealership and got the car she wanted. You should do the same thing.

Good luck!

16. A lot of the bullshit has to do with selling what they have too much of on the lot
But still, this bullshit is particularly offensive.

17. That is very true.
The first dealership that my friend visited is renowned for its extremely hard-sell tactics, but it was the closest to where she lived. She got what she wanted when she went a little further afield.

It is offensive, and especially so because (I did say it was some time ago) my friend was in her early 20s at the time. Maybe the high-pressure sales guy thought she was young and dumb enough to go for it. She wasn't.

:)

15. Not a woman, but won't touch an automatic
ROY deserves a position more to his skill level. Perhaps cleaning up after the elephants at a circus.

22. Sounds like a former co-worker.
I was showing off the small truck I had just got when he the following conversation ensued:

Him: So, did you get the stick shift to keep your wife from driving it?
Me: What are you talking about?
Him: You know, women can't drive a stick.
Me: Dude, I don't know where you get your info but my mom and my sisters all drive sticks and my wife drives a stock car in competition. I think she can handle this truck.
Him: Wow, I guess I'm an idiot.
Me: No argument from me.

To make this even funnier, about a week later another MALE co-worker's car was in the shop and he needed to run an errand. I offered my truck and handed him the keys. He came back a couple of minutes later, returned the keys and said, "Thanks, but I can't drive a stick".

Tell Roy to get bent.
