I heard it 24/7 for about six months after it came out, because I lived in a college town where such music was perceived as deep or meaningful. No fault of Ms. Osborne's, of course, but it's left a years-long bad taste in my mouth.

but Spiderweb, St. Theresa and Righthand Man are so, so good. That whole album is just amazing.

Despite having heard most of the album endless times, I still really like most of the songs.

That album used to be my favorite album so many good songs, but that "god-b.s.' song is ridiculously bad. It really doesn't fit with the sound or flow of the rest of the tracks. I was so excited about her follow up, but was ultimately so disappointed with it.

The reason it's different is it's the "rock" song of the CD, and a very good one. It's kind of blues-rock and still fits IMO.

Joan is very talented.

and the sad thing is, that album is just about flawless. It's one of the most solid albums I've ever heard...so many great songs. I despise that 'god' song with every ounce of my being because I love the rest of that album so much. Btw, they did the same thing to L7 on the Bricks are Heavy album by making them release 'Pretend We're Dead' as a single when it was bubble-gum pop, just to appeal to the masses. That song sucked equally bad but at least it was satire.

I really believe if "One of Us" had been left off of that album Joan would still be around and would be a lot more famous than she is now. And respected.

"Relish" is one of the finest debut albums you will EVER hear by a female artist though.

The only important female voice in mainstream rock I can think of is Sarah McLachlan, who is a Goddess In Her Own Right.

Tracy Bonham, Dido, Fiona Apple, Beth Orton, k.d. lang, Tori Amos - important voices, but not mainstream.

Dear Mr. President (of course!), Stupid Girls, Who Knew, Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely), U & Ur Hand, and there's an untitled track at the very end, where Pink is singing with her father, and they are singing a song that she dedicates to veterans called 'I Have Seen The Rain'. Its a war protest song.

Kelly Clarkson, Pink, and Sarah McLachlan. I also love The Veronicas, but I'm not sure they went mainstream here. I'm a Regina Spektor fan, and she's broken through on the charts. KT Tunstall's also pretty good. Not much else in the top 40 at least.

27. In my job as a music journalist, I do the usual year-end Top 10 of the year...

for 2006, my number one album was Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

My boss, who was the paper's music columnist for eight years before I took the job, disagreed slightly. He put Neko on his Top 10, but Album of the Year went to Cat Power.

So, I guess my response to your question would be, where are all the good male voices in rock?

Admittedly, both of the people I mentioned aren't terribly mainstream, but both those albums went gold, so you can't say they're terribly underground, either.

Love it. LOVE IT! Star Witness is one of the flat-out fines songs I've ever heard over the airwaves.

But does Case have a lot of influence, outside of indy and college stations? I would be glad to hear that she does.
