38. We were there last fall...

I loved Arkansas. I just didn't like the lady at the tourism center on the Arkansas side on I-something. We got on it in Springdale and took it all the way to Tulsa. No idea which interstate it was. Anyway, the people were mostly nice, and Harrison scared the crap out of me. We went into the walmart there for propane and we got stared at. It was freaky.

I know that when I lived in Oklahoma, and I am fond of Oklahoma and would really call it more my "home" if I have such a place anymore- we always laughed at "Arkansas" and when I moved here to go to grad school it was a serious fear that I was moving to the outer limits!

I have no idea really about Harrison, I've only been there passing through. It isn't far from Eureka Springs which is a lovely place and can be a lot of fun to wander around the stores, etc.

It's beautiful country up in that part of the state for sure. It is a different world than where I live in Ft. Smith. I seriously live a few miles from the border of Arkansas/Oklahoma, but it is apparently a part of Oklahoma that Oklahoma barely claims as its own. (A town called Moffet in particular which was known for its reputation as a gambling place, and a hangout of outlaws back in the 40's and 50's, and maybe beyond that?)

I lived in Stillwater, which was where I called home until my parents moved away from there. I have no family in Stillwater, no real connection there, but I still think of it as "home"?

I have family in other parts of the state, especially around Tulsa and south of there. I have some relatives in the OKC area and used to have some in Norman, but I'm pretty sure they are all deceased and their kids don't live there. I remember my great aunt used to live next door to James Garner when he was a kid and she talked about him "shooting birds with a bb gun". I remember little else about her except that story as she died when I was pretty young.

This post is way longer and probably tells way too much about me for a DU post. Oh well.

I was actually the photographer at the event she was speaking at. A friend, towards the end of the say-hello-to-Jane session, told me to trade places and she would take a picture of us together.

I was surprised during her presentation by her obvious faith... I had just assumed she would be an atheist. As I was just freshly out of a fundamentalist cult, I asked her "I grew up in a religion that says that the only hope for the a better world is for Jehovah to wipe out all the "bad" people (which in my fundy cult, meant most everyone but us) and...." As I was saying this, Jane was shaking her head and out came "oh no, God helps those who help themselves", which, while I'd certainly heard before (though it is decidedly not a phrase used by the church I came from), I'd never put in that context.

I asked her what she thought the earth's prognosis was 50 years hence, and she said that she thought we'd either be much, much improved, or we'd be in total chaos. It seemed a tossup to her.

She told me I should get her book "A Reason for Hope". I finally did get it, and read it, and it was refreshing and eye-opening to see someone be scientific and have faith at the same time. I don't quite reconcile that for myself, I've pretty much ditched all faith and feel no need for it, but her faith is beautiful in its inclusiveness.

You may be crazy :D, but she's quite stalk worthy ;)
