adorable doggy alert
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7750030

should I?

50 acres, home all day and night, I say "Yes!" When I'm not home, the dog or possible dogs. go with me.
I have to have another dog to entertain my Golden. I think it would be a perfect match.

3. CUUUUTE! I love bluetick hounds!
You do know that scenthounds can be challenging in ways that retrievers are not, right? I mean ALL FOOD--and anything they might mistake for food--must be out of reach. Once you're clear on that, they're the best dogs in the world!

Critters
now on her second scenthound--not likely her last

5. Thanks for the info!
Just as a matter of habit, I don't keep anything dog level. Maybe a trait left over from having kids. Trash cans are covered, no cleaning products where they can get to them, dirty clothes in the hamper. I've got to get another dog to keep my Golden occupied.

6. I love the scenhounds for lots of reasons--
they're loving and almost never aggressive, they are deeply loyal to their owners (to the degree that they can sometimes suffer from separation anxiety as my first beagle had, but that can be dealt with), great with kids and seniors. But they have strong prey drives, and will follow a scent no matter where it takes 'em. And they're ALWAYS hungry.

My advice to those considering getting a dog is read up on the breed. Every breed is special, and wonderful in their own way, but it helps to know what "their own way" might be.

Btw, my grandfather bred blueticks and treeing Walker hounds, so I have a soft place in my heart for the coonhounds. My beagle is taler and leaner than most, and I know that one of the things that attracted me to her is that she looked like a miniature coonhound!

Now---GO GET THAT PUPPY!

10. Thanks for the info!
I am in a unique position in that both of us, me and the mister, are always home. I like needy dogs cause the kids are all grown up and we like the minute by minute interaction.

15. Scenthounds have a special smell
A beagle list I'm on had a debate at one point as to what they smell most like. The consensus was that they smell like "Fritos". Scenthounds' coat has a kind of mild lanolin-like oil that keeps them from being weighed down by rain water or heavy dew when they're hunting. It builds up over time, and has this smell to it. Because it's the smell of my beloved beags, I actually like it, but it can become a bit strong over time. The beag needs a bath about once a month to keep the oiliness and the smell under control. Because their skin is "built" to need that oil, too much bathing dries out their skin and can lead to problems.

But trust me, the scent of a scenthound is a special aroma!

16. Fritos is low on the progression of dog stink.

:)

Roses --> Shampoo --> Cologne --> Neutral --> Fritos --> Spoiled Fish --> Smelly Feet --> Wet Garbage --> Litterbox --> Misc.
