I found this online - me, circa 1985
I'm almost embarrassed by this pic now...

Was I a geek or what?

(somebody had posted all the pics from our high school yearbook online)

same with my junior high (8th grade)

6. Isn't it funny how none of that matters any more as an adult
yet it was so important back then?

8. you mean the "superlatives"?
or the fact that I was shy? I'm still not exactly outgoing, but I have managed to sucker two otherwise intelligent and attractive women into marrying me.

But, I do still look back and wonder what would have happened if either I was not so shy, or if it was more acceptable for young women to ask men out back then (and somebody asked me out)

12. Either.
That teachers or advisers would even allow a vote on who's most shy seems like they missed an opportunity to educate students on name calling, because "shy" is not a label most people want attached to them in a yearbook.

I held a student leadership position that was an automatic ticket to the senior superlatives page in the yearbook but my photo was left off the page. It's not as if they decided to honor someone else instead -- the senior section editors deliberately left me off the page and left a blank space. I've never learned which ones were responsible or why they did it. My friends were up in arms, as were the members of the student group I lead, but I shrugged it off because I wasn't that big on the whole rah-rah high school scene any way and figured that someone was too immature to confront me. While that sounds like I had my act together, the reality was that I had a chaotic life away from school and viewed high school as a means to an end, namely getting enough scholarship money to attend college away from home. Being a 'superlative' on campus was the least of my worries.

p.s. you're probably lucky that we weren't in the same high school. I had a thing for shy boys.

I don't think you look geeky at all!

I love your moustache!

7. Wish I had known a woman who thought like you 22 years ago!
I spent most of my teens & early 20s being depressed over a lack of success with women... and, back then, it was still very unusual for a girl to ask out a guy, or for a young woman to ask a young man out.

11. The girls didn't know what they were missing
by not asking you out. :hi:

I had to ask my husband out for the first date because he was too shy to ask me. I'm so thankful I did!
And this was waaay back in 1979! We'll celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in April.

I've found that most guys won't turn down a woman if she asks him out. Well, assuming they are available, that is...

14. well, several years later...
I found out two girls in my high school did like me, but were too shy themselves to ask me out. And, one of them I would have killed to date.

And, this pic was not that long ago (i'm the one on the right)

I was just joshin you about the geeky yearbook photo.

It didn't really come off. I can't do humor on message boards. I shouldn't try.

I couldn't have grown one like that in the 9th grade if I tried. Nice job.

I'm half-Italian, so I can grow a beard pretty quickly. And, even though I'm 40 now, i still have a full head of hair (granted, with a lot of whites mixed in...)
