I'm so afraid the new Ghost Rider movie will suck big ones.
If ever a comic book hero was tailor made for a movie, it's Ghost Rider - I just saw a TV teaser for the new movie, and I have to say, while the graphics for the Ghost Rider look totally fucking cool, the movie itself looks very much like it might suck rubber donkey lungs.

And that makes me very sad. This is a comic book hero that should be done perfectly - because he's the kind of character that if he doesn't perfectly will come across like a fucking laughable awful joke.

Always one of my favorite comic books, and I hope to God that this is a really, really good movie like it's supposed to be.

1. Ghost Rider was bar none my favourite comic growing up,
but I've seen the preview for the movie a few times now, and other than Nic Cage's laugh line "I feel like my skull's on fire!" I'm not sure it'll have much to offer.

2. You might want to consider...
...that it's being handled by the same writer/director as the Daredevil movie. Dunno how you felt about that one, but it strikes me as an important indicator...

3. Well, that just ruined my night.
Still, better to get the truth now than to find out while watching the fucking thing, like that last movie about the chick, starring the woman from Fifth Element. What a piece of shit that was, and especially disappointing since I hadn't heard beforehand that it sucked so much.

5. Nicholas Cage couldn't act his way out of a nutsack
Of course, given a second string comic book character like Ghost Rider, what's he supposed to do?

I don't understand Marvel AT ALL. They have a stable of great characters, but keep sending out the minor leaguers. Ghost Rider. Electra. The Punisher. Wha't next? Man Thing?

6. Aunt May as Galactus' herald! I want to see a movie of that!
I fear that the Silver Surfer will be a movie in the next couple years, and it will be made by the same jackoffs that gave us Howard the Duck, Dick Tracey, and Superman Returns.

8. I'm deeply sorry to tell you this.
The Silver Surfer (another personal fave) will be in a movie this summer.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486576/

The only upside to this is that he's being played by the guy who plays both Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. For what that's worth.

9. You didn't like Dick Tracy?
Good. Damn, that was a horrible film. What the hell was with all that pastel food? I couldn't eat for a week after that.

10. It was pure shit. I was so disappointed.
As to the pastel food, in defense of the movie makers, the idea was to make it look like a four-color comic, which effect they pulled off marvelously.

It was the story that was fucking awful. And the acting. And the directing.

11. Just because they pulled off a four-color effect
didn't make the color scheme work on film. It added to the trainwreck, to me. In fact, the story and acting and directing were forgettable, but the feel of that film lingers on.

14. I didn't like the feel of the coloring, either. I admit they pulled it off,
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 11:30 PM by Rabrrrrrr
but yes, it was a stupid idea and made the movie - at least for me, and apparently for you - an uncomfortable experience.

It's bad enough when a movie just sucks because of story and directing and acting.

It's worse when it also sucks because the color scheme makes you feel like you're trapped in a small ugly box with no doors and the heat keeps rising and the anxiety makes you wonder if you shouldn't maybe cut yourself until you bleed to death.

13. Surely you recall Aunt May's brief stint as "Golden Oldie"
How could you forget Marvel Team-Up #137, during The Night of the Assistant Editors?!?

And she practically saved the universe while she was at it.

16. That was a good one
I liked the Daredevil Dirk McGirk issue, too. I can't remember many others, outside of The Thing, but they made me laugh at the time, that's for darned sure.

Nice to see that I'm not alone in my unbridled geekery.

But I'll be stunned if it doesn't suck. I'm guessing it'll be on DVD by my birthday, in March.

brother, have faith...the trailer looks awesome, and I just noticed that the toys for the movie have hit the racks...they look pretty sweet, I gotta pick a few up...

And a side note, FF featuring Norrin Radd looks pretty damn good :)

22. I saw the trailer a few weeks ago.
Actually, I thought it looked incredible. I'm a GR fan from way back - loved the original series in the early 80's (though the really old issues were abysmally bad!), not so fond of the 90's revival, so I was happy to see they're trying to be true to the original storyline. The only thing that bugs me a little is that Johnny Blaze is blonde - so how much trouble would it have been to dye the actor's hair? If they're trying to be true to the original, that's a little detail they should have considered. Other than that, it looks amazing, and I can't wait for it.

28. I hope you're right - Ghost Rider is a character that if not done well,
the movie won't just be bad, it'll be laughably awful, MSTK worthy, and a complete embarrassment.

35. Maybe, but...
...I intend to enjoy it. Been waiting for it for years, so I'm going to try not to go too much into geek-girl fannish nit-picker mode. :)

(Of course I might come back here and bitch about it relentlessly once I actually see it. Time will tell.)

30. One question
Saw the commercial for it online (was besieged with it, actually, while watching shows on NBC.com) and I was wondering why Nicholas Cage is doing his Elvis voice. I'm not a comic book fan, so I don't know if that's part of the character or if Cage is just being a dumbass Johnny One Note (Elvis One Note?) again. What's the deal with that? When I heard the Elvis voice come out of him (again), I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a comedy or not. (Besides the "My skull's on fire" line, he also did it with the line to himself "You deserve a second chance".)

31. The only reason Nicholas Cage gets acting roles
is that his uncle is Francis Ford Coppola. I swear Cage used his uncle's money to buy his first acting roles.
I don't know who he's blackmailing to keep getting roles. :puke:

32. Don't be afraid, just accept it. It's gonna suck big ones. Really big ones.
Look at the factors:

* Motion picture based on a comic book: Hmmmmm, where do you start here? The version of "The Punisher" that starred Dolph Lundgren? How about the "Captain America" movie that starred Dolph Lundgren? Or "Hellboy?" "Constantine?" "Daredevil?" For every good comic book to motion picture transition, there are big pile o'turds.

* Nicolas Cage: Wow, ever since he got an Oscar, the Coppolla Who Dare Not Speak His Name has made so many bombs, the UN reads his scripts for him.

Put'em together and what have you got?
