I broke my Sims 2!!
It starts to open, gets almost all the way there and then it dies.

I get my regular desktop screen and an error message that reads "The application The Sims 2 has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected. Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple?"

My Mac has never misbehaved before. In fact, I don't think it is misbehaving now, it seems to be the program or maybe the disc.

Worked perfectly fine the last time I used it (about a week ago).

HELLLLPP!!

1. Uninstall and Reinstall?
I used to have that problem on my laptop. No matter what people tell you. You can't play games on a laptop, at least not mine.

2. Yeah, I might have to
but then I'll lose all my Sims. That would be unfortunate.

I've never had a problem with games on my laptop before, so I'm kinda clueless.

5. You shouldn't lose your Sims.
...when you uninstall it, it'll ask if you want to delete your saved sims. I'm not sure of the exact wordage though. If you say no, after the reinstall they should still be there.

10. Like I said...
...I'm not sure of the exact wordage, but I know that you can save your sims. I've done it, but it's been a while since I did. I also know how to reset your neighborhoods without reinstalling, if you ever get tired of your current batch of sims.

9. Do you kill them off at random?
I like to create a couple, give them a kid, get the wife pregnant, then kill the dude. It's kinda fun. Or have the wife give birth then take the door off the bathroom or something. It's kinda fun. I'm sick, I know. But it's just sims. I always end up feeling guilty, so that makes it better, right?

11. You should see what I do...
...like getting a fireplace or a barbeque, put it in a room with some things that are flammable. Lure your unsuspecting sim into the room, and have him light a fire. Remove the door, and watch'em burn.

14. I gave up on them about 6 months after The Sims 1 came out
about the time I realized I had been sitting there needing to pee for the last two hours and I had let my Sims go pee maybe 20 times

My daughter does unspeakable things to her Sims though. Makes me wonder about the future.

7. Possibly a corrupted file ...

Could be nothing, could be an error on the disc ... could be a lot of things.

I'm not familiar with the Apple version of The Sims 2 or where it stores things, so you'll have to figure that out, but you can backup your neighborhoods and associated files before doing a reinstall. As noted above, the application should give you the option of saving your 'hoods when you do the uninstall, but just to be safe, I'd do a manual backup as well.

8. Try deleting the preference file.
I don't have that game so I'm not sure what it would be called. Try searching for "sim" and "plist"

It should be named something like : com.sims.plist

Deleting it might destroy any saved games you have. I doubt it, but it could.

12. Well crap.
I uninstalled, reinstalled...and it still won't work.

I'm guessing I need a new disc.

Thoughts?

Thanks all for your help!

13. Uninstalling should not remove the preference file.
If it was corrupt it still is. They do this so you keep your settings if you have to reinstall.

16. Whoo hoo!
Took a while to find it, but you were right the file was sims.plist something or another. ;)

I lost my Sims, but that's ok...I thought I was going to have to shell out $50 for another disc!

Thanks much for the assist.
