Happy 90th birthday, Ernest Borgnine
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 06:45 PM by faygokid
On Wednesday, Ernest Borgnine turns 90, and he is a tremendously underrated actor, even given his Oscar for "Marty." I remember him for so many roles, but "Ice Station Zebra" stands out (On my top 10 guy movies; think "Guns of Navarone," "Magnificent Seven"). Anyway, he is apparently (Mc)hale and hearty, and bless him for all he has brought to us through the years.

2. I think he was also the very first actor to swear in a Disney movie
He said 'Damn' in "The Black Hole", IIRC.

3. Thanks!
Hard to imagine that he's ninety . . .

Marty was such a fabulous movie--one of the very best ever made. May have been the last Oscar movie in black and white . . .

9. Please do see "The Apartment." One of the all-time best.
A young Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon, and another truly great performance by Fred MacMurray, one of the most underrated actors of the 20th century.

5. "The Catered Affair" with Bette Davis...
...you can catch this once in a while on TCM. Borgnine holds his own opposite the grande diva Lady Bette.

7. Great actor, but he wasn't in Magnificent Seven.
At least I don't remember him in it. Maybe you're thinking of The Wild Bunch. My favorite roles are as the conductor in Emperor of the North Pole, and of course as "Fatso" in From Here to Eternity. I always thought of him as a nice guy who is great at evil rolls.

10. No, I know that, I just cited it as an example of a "guy movie."
Watch Borgnine in "Bad Day at Black Rock" with Spencer Tracy. Wow!

13. I saw him once in 1968
There was a hardware store right next to Los Angeles Valley College, where I went (Neiman Reid's Lumber City for all you LA locals) He was buying a bag of nails, grinning and waving at everyone who was waving at him. Seemed like a really nice guy. I've seen Marty a million times and still love it.

My hairdresser has an English Bulldog named Borgnine, in Ernest's honor.

Let's not blacklist the man
Yes, it is unfortunate that he, along with so many others, may have bet on the wrong horse.
But let's give the man his props - he's a terrific actor. God Bless! (oh,oh, now I'm in trouble!)

22. Ouch! I thought, given his hardscrabble beginnings, he was a Dem. Happy birthday anyway.
Thanks for sharing this, but maybe he's changed his mind, like so many others. He's still a fine actor, and I'm glad to have had him in my life as such.

23. The Borgnines are multi-millionaires...
...so this should not be too much of a surprise. He did however always make the working stiff look good in his films.
