46. I think Whitaker has it in the bag.
He played the role of a lifetime. Nearly impossible to beat.

Only thing I was curious about was which film Leo would be nominated for. From what I understand he did a fantastic job in both. Eventually, he'll have an Oscar-just not this year.

16. I know
Hudson has a good chance of winning. I loathed her attitude on American Idol, but good for her! Voted out of AI too early, to a Golden Globe two years later, and now an Oscar nod. And, she actually does have a hard-luck story.

I love Helen Mirren, and am so glad she's finally getting some great recognition.

45. Technically, I think it's adapted from the "Borat" character itself
Since Sasha Baron Cohen did not create Borat especially for the movie, I guess AMPAS figured "adapted" was a better fit than "original."

24. Well, I can kind of understand that.
Don't get me wrong, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were outstanding, but the movie seemed a little disjointed and thin in places to me.

It certainly didn't qualify as one of the best movies I've ever seen, although it was always entertaining.

It's really hard for a movie like that to compete against a bunch of dramas.

26. I'll predict the winners right now...
Picture: "Babel" will slightly edge out "Letters from Iwo Jima"
Director: Marten Scorcese (because he's still never won one, and they sometimes play "catch up" with longtime "bridesmaids"
Actress: Helen Mirren - a slam dunk
Actor: Forrest Whitaker, though Peter O'Toole might edge out due to the "bridesmaid" factor
Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson - another slam dunk
Supporting Actor: wide-open category, but I'll bet Eddie Murphy wins
Screenplay written directly - "Letters from Iwo Jima" because the Academy loves Clint
Screenplay adapted - "Borat" because they like to hand a consolation prize to good films that they couldn't give any other Oscar to
Cinematography - I have a hunch they will hand it to "El Laberinto del Fauno" (Pan's Labyrinth)
Art Direction, Costume Design, Music, Sound - all pretty much slam dunks for "Dreamgirls"
Animated Feature - Cars
Foreign Language film - ""El Laberinto del Fauno" (Pan's Labyrinth) but I don't know why they didn't nominate "Letters from Iwo Jima"
I have a feeling that "The Departed" and "Little Miss Sunshine" are going to go home empty-handed, though I wouldn't mind seeing Abagail Breslin win for "Little Miss Sunshine," the film wasn't really strong enough and "Dreamgirls" or "Borat" should have gotten its Best Picture slot.

28. Maybe it was because my expectations for "Little Miss Sunshine" were built up too much,
but I was disappointed in it overall. It had some good laughs, but I thought there were too many characters and too many little subplots and it strayed from its main subject too much. And the climactic scene when the girl does her number was too long and not funny enough. We laughed at "Little Miss Sunshine" but quickly forgot it afterwards. Sorry to disappoint you - it's not a bad movie and the little girl did an excellent job.

48. Disagree about Scorcese
I suspect they'll overlook him once again, thinking they can catch him at any time. He's always on their list but never gets the award because they think they'll always have another chance to give it to him.

Whitaker should have it. O'Toole does have the bridemaid factor but look at Scorcese above. And Whitaker played the role of a lifetime. If he doesn't win people will argue for years about it.

Unsure about film but I'll agree w/ Hudson and Murphy. Both have good stories behind them and some in the academy still love a good musical. Mirren is a shoe-in, no contest.

42. For your consideration...

Wanting to mount an Oscar campaign on behalf of Dern, Lynch discovered it would cost him $3 million. He was appalled. Instead, Lynch is using guerrilla PR tactics that are part Dern advocacy and part protest, such as sitting on L.A. street corners with a poster of Dern. And a cow. "It's like a David Lynch movie," laughs Dern. "It's out-there and irreverent, and yet he's saying something of pretty phenomenal value. It's fabulous, insane, and very sweet."

Lousy Oscars, haha.

therefore, I'm going with Jackie Earle Haley and Abigail Breslin to win.

I also predict that Peter O'Toole and Scorcese will get precisely what they got the previous 100 times they were nominated - jack shit.
