Poll question: Best Woody Allen Movie?
I know I'm going to catch a lot of crap from fans of Love and Death, Bananas, Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Bullets over Broadway, Scoop, Take the Money and Run, Interiors, Everyone Says I Love You and maybe even Sweet and Lowdown, but tough, DU only gives me 10 spots to fill. And as for the rest of you, you're way off anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

3. I see two votes for Crimes and Misdemeanors
I thought it was awful. He was trying to copy Bergman and it didn't work. My favorite was Annie Hall. It has a real plot, the characters were believable and the lines were hysterical.

6. Husbands and Wives
The most effectively filmed two hours' worth of hideous interpersonal discomfort in the history of cinema.

Judy Davis is magnificent. Sydney Pollack is magnificent. Mia Farrow is magnificent. Woody Allen is... Well, he's Woody Allen, but it works in this role.

Annie Hall is also an excellent film.

16. My vote as well. Favorite line: "I'm cold"
When Juliette Lewis's ex confronts them outside her building, while Lewis's character is arguing with him and macho Woody is making the case to go inside.

23. The scene where Judy Davis heaves her stuff into the cab is fantastic
I've never seen that kind of sick, panicked discomfort evoked so well onscreen.

But "I'm cold" is very good, too! So many great lines/moments in that film.

34. Absolutely, without a doubt, his funniest film EVER!
"If we kill more Frenchmen, we win. If they kill more Russians, they win!"

"Uh, what do we win?"

"What do we win, private? Imagine your loved ones conquered by Napoleon and forced to live under French rule! Do you want them to eat those rich foods and heavy sauces?"

"No!"

"Do you want them to eat souffle every meal and croissant?"

"No!"

37. Yes, but I'm a militant coward.
Sonja: Violence is justified in the service of mankind.
Boris: Who said that?
Sonja: Attila the Hun.
Boris: You're quoting a Hun to me?

Sonja: What are you suggesting, passive resistance?
Boris: No, I'm suggesting active fleeing.

Sonja: Boris, you can't be serious, you're talking about Mother Russia.
Boris: She's not my mother. My mother's standing right here, and she's not gonna let her youngest baby get shrapnel in his gums.

Mother: He'll go and he'll fight, and I hope they will put him in the front lines.
Boris: Thanks a lot, Mom. My mother, folks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drill Sergeant: You want a dishonorable discharge?
Boris: Yes sir, either that or a furlough.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drill Sergeant: One, two. One, two. One, two.
Boris: Three is next, if you're having any trouble.

Boris: The question is have I learned anything about life. Only that human being are divided into mind and body. The mind embraces all the nobler aspirations, like poetry and philosophy, but the body has all the fun. The important thing, I think, is not to be bitter... if it turns out that there IS a God, I don't think that He's evil. I think that the worst you can say about Him is that basically He's an underachiever. After all, there are worse things in life than death. If you've ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman, you know what I'm talking about. The key is, to not think of death as an end, but as more of a very effective way to cut down on your expenses. Regarding love, heh, what can you say? It's not the quantity of your sexual relations that counts. It's the quality. On the other hand if the quantity drops below once every eight months, I would definitely look into. Well, that's about it for me folks. Goodbye.

38. "...all men are Socrates, that means all men are homosexual.
Well, I'm not a homosexual. OK, once some Cossacks whistled at me; I have the kind of body that excites both persuasions. But, some men are heterosexual, and some men are bisexual, and some men don't think about sex at all - they become lawyers."

27. Well, I don't know if it was his "best!"
But for me, his most aproachable film was "Hannah and Her Sisters."

I don't really remember the plot now, but I do remember the feeling of family, and a lot of connectedness........

I enjoyed it bunches!

28. Never really been a fan but voted for
Play It Again, Sam because I have very fond memories of seeing it a couple of times when I was a kid.

I say I'm not really a fan, but when I watch his films I usually enjoy them...get the feeling he's overrated, though. I've enver even seen Annie Hall (or, if I did, I forgot that I did), but remember all the Oscars hoopla over it back when it came out.

I just recently watched Broadway Danny Rose and Mighty Aphrodite for the first time.

I especially liked the latter, maybe partly 'cos Mira Sorvino looked almost exactly like my working-girl friend I had here (before she left Vegas), right down to the hair, the body (including her height -- the same, at 5'10") and very, very closely matching her face. It was good to see my special little friend again... :D

Dianne Wiest was simply amazing.

Other than Bullets, I don't really like any of Woody's movies.

Annie Hall is a close second mainly because of Keaton.

46. Or when
they're walking down the street and Diane Keaton's character asks Mariel Hemingway what she does and she responds, "I go to high school."

also Diane Keaton's explanation for her dislike of Bergman, etc. in which she cites that she's from Philadelphia, and hence believes in God, causing Woody to ask what the hell she's talking about.
