Jane Eyre
I was an avid reader in my younger years, but somehow I missed this. Last night I watched 2 hours of Jane Eyre on PBS and wow! Dark, brooding, tragic stuff. I would have LOVED it as a teenager. I read a synopsis on the web today and will watch 2 more hours tonight. How did I miss this classic? Has everyone read or watched this?

1. I always thought it was dark...
and I set my DVD-R up to record and then forgot to set the channel right. Damn. I'll catch it on the repeat Saturday night. I need to be in bed by 9 so I do miss a lot. I was really looking forward to seeing this.

4. You may be right; and it may be different in different markets
I just checked and tonight on PBS is John and Abigail Adams. Well, I wish they'd run that against the State of the Union.

3. My dear undeterred!
I didn't see the PBS production......

But I loved the book, and still get it out now and then to re-read!

It is a wonderful, fully realized story, IMHO!

:hi:

5. I loved it when he asked her "Do you think I am handsome?"
And she answered No, as if it were some kind of insult to focus on physical appearance.

19. I liked it when she was asked her where good children when they die
She says Heaven. Then when they ask her where bad children go, she says Hell. Then when they ask how she will avoid going to Hell she says something along the lines of "I shall stay in good health and not die."

6. I Loved Jane Eyre
I read it in high school and again in an English lit course at university. I have never seen a film adaptation. Where are you watching it? I would be interested to see it as well.

12. Eighteen versions and counting, querelle.
At least that's what IMDB says.

http://www.imdb.com/find?s=tt&q=Jane+Eyre

The first filmed version of Jane Eyre dates from 1910. :wow:

I hope you enjoy the latest. That's Maggie Smith's son playing Mr. Rochester.

15. I read Wuthering Heights in my teens.
It was something I read for fun, not as a result of an assignment, and believe me, the story has never left me. No dramatized version has done justice to the images produced in my imagination through that book.

It's a dark story, and of course it's all related second- and third-hand (i.e., as told to or by the narrator). Very haunting, very dark, very memorable.

13. I've seen the entire thing.
It's my favorite book. Ruth Wilson is probably the best Jane I've ever seen. IMHO, it's definitely one of the better adaptions, and I've seen a lot of them.

There are some things that don't exactly jive with the book, but hey, that's TV for you. And Toby Stephens...*swoon*

16. The book is lovely, even though quite disturbing.
I breathed in Jane Eyre, after recieving for Christmas one year. It's an easy book to jump into. Poor Jane.

As an adult, I'm more concerned about the "crazy" wife than I was back then. Poor crazy wife.

18. Her name was Bertha Mason
Incidentally, have you ever seen the move "The Wide Sargasso Sea" which I believe is also a book? It's a prequel to "Jane Eyre" in that it deals with Bertha's life in Jamaica before she married Edward Rochester and how she goes insane. It's nowhere near as good as "Jane Eyre" but the locations are absolutely gorgeous.

You know Elizabeth Taylor had one of her first - if not her first - acting roles in the 1944 version of the movie. She played Jane's friend "Helen" ; it was an unbilled part.

20. It was one of my favorite novels as a young adolescent.
I've seen a number of film versions and Sunday night's was interesting. I was disappointed in the abridged version of Jane's early years since much of it was apparently based on Charlotte Bronte's own experience at school. But was part two on tonight? I watched "John and Abigail Adams". Don't we have to wait until next Sunday?

If she's a brooding, overemotional, romantic type of girl she'll probably enjoy it! :P

24. I missed the first hour last night
I love this story and all the interpretations on film. This one is great. My library should get a copy, so maybe I won't have to wait until summer to see it from the beginning.
