What are your thoughts on the BCS?
Is is legit or is it BS?

Anyways, while on the internet, I was watching at the Sugar Bowl. Many of these people defend the system but I know many people on this forum who think that it is a bunch of bullshit. One thing beef I have is that in many cases another team who does not win the BCS game can whine their way into sharing the title of national champion. 6 years ago, Michigan won the Rose Bowl and became the national champions and Nebraska whined their way into sharing the title. 2 years ago, my school, CU, was a long shot contender along with Oregon, and Nebraska. Someone was saying that if Oregon got a slot in the Rose Bowl it would make the BCS look bad and he almost thought it would be nice to see that happen. Anyways we (CU) won the Big 12 after beating Nebraska decisively and beating Oklahoma in a division playoff for the division title. Nebraska went to the Rose Bowl and we went to the Fiesta Bowl. The arrangement was that if we won the Fiesta Bowl and Nebraska won the Rose Bowl, we would share the title. Of course we both got killed in our respective games. I am just discussing my confusion over the BCS and the possibility that it is Bullshit.

1. It's the system we have, and all the major conferences have agreed to it.
Therefore, LSU is the National Champion, no matter how the AP votes. It's the system that we have. (And, no, USC fans, I'm not saying you don't have a claim to the MNC. It's just not the official MNC.)

That being said, I don't like it. I suppose it's better than before, but I can come up with dozens of scenarios in which the BCS doesn't work, and I don't think there's any way to fix it so that I can't come up with dozens of scenarios where it doesn't work.

We need a playoff, but that will never happen ($$$$$).

3. How does the BCS work exactly?
I heard it is based on something called strength of schedule.

How could we have a playoff? Out of 117 division 1-A teams it would be a little difficult.

4. Four components to the BCS.
It's a combination of number of losses, human polls (AP and Coaches averaged), computer rankings (I think they use seven of them, and average them), a primative strength of schedule formula, and a quality win deduction for beating a team in the top ten of the BCS. The QW is not available for all teams, obviously.

You don't have to invite all 117 teams to a playoff, you know. Take the top eight, and number nine gets the shaft. Now, number three gets the shaft. A playoff is better.

2. A playoff would be better...
I know the arguments.. Supposedly the student atheletes are pushed to play more games and are distracted from their studies. I live in a town with a I-AA school and it seems to work just fine. Did I mention they had a national champion 3 weeks before the Sugar Bowl?

6. You mean the Diebold Bowl?
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 01:04 AM by mouse7
This is the 2nd time in three years the Big-12 runner-up has played in the National Chamionship.

How the Diebold BCS series can claim they have a legitimate national championship game with conference runner-ups playing for the title makes as much sense as... well... let's just say it seeems like Karl Rove is running the BCS, too.

Every college football team in the country has gotten screwed by the BCS system, because it turns the whole college football national championship process into a sell-to-the-highest bidder free-for-all. These kids are being taught what happens on the field doesn't matter. Only the money matters. How dare they threaten to throw players out of college sports for signing with agents? They are the ones holding the tutorials on actual results being meaningless compared to almighty draw of the dollar. So, Chris Webber took a wad of cash while he was at Michigan, huh? Good for Chris!

10. The BCS is a Bush/Cheney conspiracy
And Haliburton was chosen to write the BSC software favor the "red" states, obviously. USC was clearly bettern than OU, yet the team from the red state gets the shot at the championship.
