30. Agree on the facemask. Two feet down was irrelevant because of the push out.
You can't push a man out of bounds while he's coming down with the ball. That was a fair call. It doesn't matter anyway. The Pats defense looks done.

32. You CAN push him out...
There's no penalty for pushing him out. The issue is whether, in the judgement of the officials, he would have come down with the ball in possession in bounds if he wasn't pushed. They said yes. I think that was questionable, but not really a bad call. Just one of those things where the Pats got the benefit of the doubt.

after being pushed out. Only one replay angle clearly showed that he did. The refs got it right.

A team with that type of halftime lead very seldom loses in the NFL, even if the other team comes back and ties it up or takes the lead.

49. These teams are flawed as hell
Two straight possessions with one pass carrying deep in opposing territory. That may look cute and be entertaining but it's not close to the caliber of teams we had in the pre-salary cap era.

Now the Colts are down by 3 and relying on their defense to get the ball back. Good luck. The Colts special teams have been horrendous today.

56. I'm glad Peyton got the ball back
Give him a chance to decide it. It would have been a tame disappointing ending if New England had converted that 3rd down to all but end the game since the Colts have only one time out left.

Sheesh, Harrison tried to fumble the game away. He and Reggie Wayne have been anything but surehanded today.

Repeating, it's ridiculous how both of these teams allow one massive pass play to carve deep into their territory, during the 4th quarter.

Now it will be interesting to see how the Colts play this. Do they try to score the TD quickly, or get cute and juice the clock with conservative plays to leave Brady with no time. You're supposed to go for the TD, regardless of how quickly it comes.

Not that he needs it, but on the road needing a TD would be a capper.

Manning will get plenty of credit regardless, executing a comeback like this.

Now let's see if the Colts can manage competent kickoff coverage.

trying to see how far we can get this branch to stick out!

No, I never thought of Manning as a choker. But others have. There are comments upthread claiming so. (And no I don't think of Brady as a choker, either. The comment was sarcasm, or juxtaposition, or some such thing.)

90. The key play of the game was the 3rd and 4 at 2:30 remaining
I was very surprised Brady didn't convert there. Give credit to Bob Sanders for cutting in front and nearly making the INT.

If New England had made that first down the clock runs to the 2 minute warning and Indy could stop the clock only once. Essentially, game over.

But I agree the clock management was strange at the end of the game. They should have called time out after the first completion of the last drive.

104. Colts are favored by 7 in the Super Bowl
Over/under is 49, making a projection of roughly 28-21.

This is the second straight year a lower seeded AFC team is favored by more than a field goal over the top seeded NFC team.

108. Interesting game with plenty of contrasts
Grossman is obviously a potential liability but one way to boost a shaky QB is a physical and effective running game. Chicago could control the line of scrimmage. For some reason the Patriots got away from the running game today after it burned Indy early.

Here's one interesting stat: For the past three years the Colts have lost in the playoffs to a team with a decided edge in defensive yards per pass attempt, about a half yard or more every time. Indy's pass defense was significantly improved this year, and only one team in the playoffs had that half yard+ edge, the Chicago Bears.

112. They'll lose if the Bears win the game outright
The money always shows up on the underdog to win the game. But the oddsmakers know that so they put up a much lower money line than typical based on the pointspread. Sometimes it's a joke, the money line (odds to win straight up) maybe half of what it would be in the regular season.

Chicago fans should be aware of that. It's almost guaranteed you'll have far better value taking the 7 points than the money line. Sometimes I hear novice bettors at Super Bowl time talking brazenly about taking the odds to win the game and not the points. That sounds great but if you're taking the underdog it's basically stupid, no threat of value. It would be like picking a presidential hopeful for 2008 and receiving half the odds you're supposed to get, based on true probability.

At +7, for example, I would never take less than +250. Right now the typical money line on this game is roughly -250 on the Colts and +210 on Chicago. That means bet 25 to win 10, or bet 10 to win 21. It's MUCH better value for Colts bettors. I have a value chart on money lines based on decades of research. My "give" number on a 7 point favorite is -240, which is basically where this money line is. Normally the available number is not close to the range, but in the Super Bowl, as I indicated, the linesmakers slash it due to the known tendency of wagerers to prefer the underdog regardless of value.

The money on the spread itself is typically balanced, which of course is the basic idea.

115. I had to automate it, and rely on a grind
It's not as ego-rewarding to bet hundreds of games based on mathematical systems and just try to hit 55-58%. But I found out it's by far the best solution for me. Not as time consuming, for one thing. Instead of keeping track of every injury and every rumor I just bet what the situational and statistical angles tell me. No second guessing that way. Today I lost both games in the first half but my system was 6-0 in the playoff first halves before today.

I just become a bit mentally lazy when I'm in Vegas - I only go there on small vacations a couple times a year, and I tend to shut down the thinking side of my brain.

Just looking at the odds on the big boards in the sports bars makes me dizzy, as I don't understand any of the terminology, and whatever I once did, I've forgotten long ago.

With blackjack, there are only a few easy rules to follow. The rest is pure luck. With multiple-deck shoes, there isn't much point in even trying to count cards. So I don't.

There are only certain machines I play, and I do play them in a disciplined way, but it doesn't involve much thinking. Just enough, however, to come back with plenty of the casino's money most of the time. :)

107. Wow - that was a great game
I don't really like the Colts or Manning, but it is nice for Dungy. And it's a milestone to have two black coaches in the Super Bowl. Who will win the Super Bowl? I lean towards the Bears, only because their defense looked so good again. But the Colts have more weapons than the Saints. The Saints rely on the run a lot, and the Eagles had a bad run defense.
