What car do you drive?
I was just wondering what car everyone drives. I'm thinking about buying a new car, maybe a small SUV.

84. My mom has one
That I borrowed for about 5 months.

If you have dogs or frequently haul bulky, dirty items, they're indispensible. The back seats can fold up or come out entirely, turning the whole back area into a big cargo space. Also the interior is basically rubber/plastic, so if you get the inside dirty you can wipe it out with a sponge.

I have slept in it, moved across the state in it, gone camping in it, fit two big sky kennels in it, fit 12 8 foot 2x6 boards in it, fit about 2 cubic yards of soil in it, and driven up shitty dirt roads in it.

Good times. :D

149. We've got an xB
Lots of room for passengers (how many cars can seat four 6'4" folks with head room and leg room for all?)

Cheap to buy, operate, maintain & insure.

It's a Toyota.

The ugliness will wear off, and the looks will start to grow on you.

You'll find yourself waving at other xB owners.

You'll find yourself amazed that a toaster on wheels can get 35 MPG.

163. No problems here
You've got to be willing to step on the gas and get the revs up, but it keeps up on the highway just fine.

Handles great, too. You can throw it into a corner with confidence.

The stock wheels are 15 inch, bigger than the ones on our old Toyota Previa, bigger than the ones on our 99 Honda civic. You can put 17s on with little problem, changing your tires to 205/45-17 from the stock 185/60-15s

141. Another Subaru Forester vote.
SUV ground clearance, all wheel drive, gas mileage not quite even with a car, but WAAAYYYY better than any SUV. Just stay away from the turbo model, no matter how nice that extra power may feel. Not only will it kill your mileage, but it can ONLY run premium gasoline. The sales guys won't tell you that (I was going to buy a turbo, and bailed at the last minute when I found that out. I own a normally aspirated Forester today and it has plenty of power for everything including driving offroad).

FWIW, the registration on my Forester says it's a station wagon. It's just a tall one. The SUV thing is really just to make the marketing guys happy. Oh, and if you sit in a Forester with a sunroof you will NEVER want to own any other vehicle. It's huge, and really opens up the view...important if you like driving to scenic places.

The Outback is another excellent choice if you don't need the extra room in the Forester. One of my co-workers just bought an '07 Outback and absolutely loves it.

13. I have a Saturn SW1
Saturns are pretty cool- I got mine super cheap because everybody in CA wants Japanese cars and you can't give a used American car away, and I've beat the hell out of it with no reliability issues to speak of. Since they have the plastic body panels, they hide their age well- no little parking lots dings, etc to give it away. Mine is ten years old now and could pass for half that easily, better if I actually washed the thing once in a while.

If I were in the market for a small SUV, I'd take a look at the VUE, also the L200 wagon if you just need the crap hauling versatility but not AWD.

30. 2003 Suzuki XL-7
With four kids, the third row seating is a necessity. We bought the XL-7 new in 2003 and we've put 82,000 miles on it in less than four years. We love that thing. Leather, 4WD, everything and they are very reasonably priced. City and highway combined, you'll get about 18 mpg. When gas went up so high last year I got a VW Beetle to drive for work (I'm in outside sales so I drive a lot) and now my husband drives the XL-7 on his regular 36 mile commute. All in all, I could not be happier with that truck. We drove all four kids from Detroit to Orlando in it three years ago and it was great.

31. And we wonder why we have no manufacturing or unions...
<sigh>

Volkswagon. Audi. BMW. Subaru. Honda.

All foreign owned, so that's where the profits go.

And they are either made by foreign labor, or in the US of non-union labor IIRC.

I drive a 1989 Olds Regency 98, made by the UAW.

Yeah, it's a piece of shit now, being 18 years old with a 170,000 miles on it and modest maintenence, and I won't be sorry to get rid of it. The car is mechanically sound, though. Solid as a rock, starts right up, smooth-running, and about as much power as when it left the factory. Just the interior has kind of gone to hell due to a windshield leak, and other bits and pieces just don't work particulary well. Body flex, for example. Wind noise (probably because I've had to break into it twice), that kind of thing.

Plus, let's face it, it's an old person's car. The almost-Caddy. Real soft suspension, etc. Being about have the age of the average Regency buyer, I'm ready for something more modern and sporty.

I'll have a chance to pick up a 2004 Subaru Forrester with a 5-speed stick in a few months. Family deal, no interst long-term financing, so I can't afford to turn it down, but if I was buying new I'd be getting a Ford Escape (which comes in a hybrid) or an all-wheel-drive Ford Fusion.

If/when I finally meet Miss Right and pop out another kid or two, I can getting something bigger than a Forrester. If I was buying new, maybe a Ford Edge or Five Hundred with AWD. Something in that size. Medium-sized car-based SUV (aka 'crossover') or large sedan. Maybe one of those new Jeep midsize ones, Compass or that other one. You get the idea.

34. I know, I know
Being from an auto industry family, I had a hard time when I bought my Suzuki XL-7. But at the time, there were no small American-made SUVs with seven passenger seating available. The closest I could find was a Dodge Durango and it got half the gas mileage and cost $15,000 more. The car I had before the XL-7 was a Chrysler PT Cruiser--great American car, made in Mexico. And before that I was married into a Ford family and drove one piece of crap after another: Escort, Aerostar, Mystique. I swore I've never own another car that even started with the letter "F".

38. I have a Mazda
Ford owns 33.4% of Mazda (which gives them controlling interest according to Japanese law). My Mazda 3 was built in Japan but most Mazda 6's are built in the US. So is it a foreign car or some kind of wierd international hybrid? It's hard to tell these days. Do you base it on the ownership of the company or where it is built? Or if the majority of its parts are foreign or domestic?

I buy vehicles based on what I am looking for at the time. I have owned one American car in my life and that was a Saturn. A decent car; not spectacular but had some nice features (like dent-resistant doors) that I wish other carmakers would adopt. Plus a no pressure sales policy that was refreshing. The last time I went into that dealership they were just as high pressure as all the rest, although the sticker price is still what you pay; you don't have to deal with dickering there.

39. Mazda makes good cars
I don't really have a problem with people buying imports, (I kinda want a Toyota Sienna if I ever need more room than the wagon affords- I'm not so impressed by it's American competitors) I just think it's a good idea to consider domestic makes first and not to rule them out entirely, as many buyers seem to do, at least out here in California.

49. Yeah, I had an '89 Mercury Tracer
Mercury nameplate, made by Mazda. That little car was indestructible. My ex-husband totaled it, then drove it for another year. It looked like hell, but just kept running. Until I bought the Suzuki I had never bought a foreign car. As I said, at the time, no American car company was making the vehicle I was looking for. Suzuki has also partnered with GM on a lot of vehicles. Like alarimer said, it's hard to determine what is foreign or domestic today. I buy what I like. I would love to buy American (I live in Detroit for god's sake), but the car companies have to build what people want to buy.

51. True.
As I said, if I ever work, my way up from my wagon to a minivan or something, I'd almost certainly go with an import as the american models lack the safety features and reliability I want once they're used enough I wouldn't cry over the price.

72. I drove a few American cars
I wanted something fun that could transport a kayak, in this case with a roof rack. Now you can put a rack on any vehicle so I bought the one I just fell in love with when I drove it. And a Consumer Reports best buy. The only similar American car they tested in that group was the Dodge Caliber which got very poor ratings. I have had enough bad experiences with Dodges to know that the quality just isn't there.

35. Jeep's a Daimler Chrysler brand.
So if you want to buy a real American brand and not just "American" that's not it. They don't have a real good quality or reliability record anyhow, and even the real German makes are going downhill in terms of quality and reliability (while they still cost a mint to repair.)

Like I said above: Check out Saturn. They're great UAW made, reliable cars. And finally they make nearly a full lineup: sporty cars, family cars, wagons, mini-SUVs, a minivan, every common sort of car but a truck or a bigass SUV.

57. Chrysler 300
I'm surprised at Daimler's struggle because I've heard that Chrysler was very profitable, but that was because they relied so much on suv's and vans which are more profitable.

my family had a 2 voyagers and they were great cars. Does anyone know how the Chrsyler 300 drives? It looks great.

So, don't depend on my silly family for a report on the Chrysler 300.

54. GM
Its very interesting to see what the big 3 are up to and i think they are really trying to make good cars to jumpstart their sales. GM- Saturn have really nice cars coming out. Ford is developing this crazy new mini-van that looks like its out of the Jetsons. Chrsyler's in trouble, but they have the mercedes brand.

My brother drives a VW and they also have a new SUV and that is selling well and its build on the same platform as the Porshe SUV, which I've been seeing a lot of, it seems like wealthy people really love Porshe and its more expensive than Mercedes or BMW, so there's a lot of prestige in owning a Porshe SUV Cayanne which runs around 90K, even though it looks a bit bland.

142. Why bigger than a Forrester for kids?
Just curious, because my '06 Forester seats my 3 kids, including the little one in the booster seat, without complaints. It has a very roomy backseat...bigger than anything Jeep has out. It's even got a hitch and pulls my 1 horse trailer around with ease.

Oh, and I blame the American car companies more than the American consumer. Americans buy foreign cars because the foreign car companies are building what we want. I LOOKED at American cars FIRST. My requirements were simple...I wanted better than 30MPG highway, 4WD was a requirement (I'm frequently in the Sierras), it had to have some towing capacity, and it had to be comfortable enough to pack all three kids into the backseat for our bi-annual 1200 mile roadtrip to see the relatives in Oregon. Not one American car met those requirements.

It doesn't look like much but it cost me less than $10,000, it has an amazing amount of head and leg room in both front and back seats, I can fit tons of stuff in it, the rear seats fold down and it gets close to 35 mpg highway and anywhere from 28 to 30 city.

I bought it in Vermont, drove it home to California, last summer took it across country for over 8000 miles and have never had a moment's trouble with it.

4 cylinder EX-L. Very nice and reliable, with all the little luxuries. It's quick, handles well, is very safe (one of the few cars with a 5-star NCAP rating in every category) and only one mpg less fuel efficient than the Accord hybrid.

It's also nice and anonymous (so much so that I often find it hard to pick it out in the supermarket lot), so you can bomb along the highways without triggering the cops' "fast car" meter.

Heavily modified. 300 hp. 25 mpg city. Emissions better than federal standards. Tire shredding power, decent mileage, and as clean as a Honda. And damn fun to drive, I might add.

But ... an acquaintance of mine reports witnessing an electric car beat a Ferrari in the quarter mile. That's really amazing. The reciprocating internal combustion engine is obsolete ... it no longer meets society's needs for cleanliness.

The Caravans have held up much better than the Nissan we had prior to that. The Nissan was good for the first three or so years but after that it was costing us big time to keep it running.

Having said that, I'd love, love, love to have a Honda Element.

You read that right, a 1988 Chevy Nova. It needs a new headliner and a little Bondo for rust, but it beats making another car payment.

My wife bought it new before she met me. I've been driving it for the last 4+ years -- after I bought her a 2002 Ford Taurus for hauling the kids. If it keeps running (it will soon turn 100,000 miles -- about half of which I've put on the car in 4+ years), it'll be our older daughter's first car. She turns 16 next month.

I've owned it for a year and a half and have only invested in a new set of tires and a few oil changes...Nissans are solid automobiles

It is rusted on one side only otherwise it is great. Everytime I drive it I think of all the american cars I have been upside down on with $ wise and smile. I am actually driving a car that has been payed off for 5 years oh what a feeling.

132. 1984 Ford Bronco II
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 01:59 PM by RadFemFL
Bought it for $500 off Craigslist in July. The only thing I had to do to it was get a new clutch and rear u-joint, plus regular maintenance. I live way up in the mountains, and it's a great vehicle for the snowy mountain roads.

Edit to add photo:

159. I drive a 2002 Malibu
It's a very boring car. But it's reliable and was manufactured and assembled entirely in my home state of Michigan by union labor which is very important to me.

And I only have 48,000 miles on it so it will last quite a few more years. That is if I don't smack into my porch steps again and have to replace another knuckle...

My dream car is a Subaru or Volvo. But I don't feel right about buying either with the state of Michigan's economy due to unfair trade practices.

160. '03 Chevy silverado 6 cylinder, manual transmission.
I require a pick-up truck. No trash pick-up so I make dump runs. Taking my six dogs to the vet and the kennel. (three get carsick) Also handy for my many home improvement projects, its hard to carry plywood or lumber in a sedan.

I wish they would come out with a viable hybrid pick-up. Chevy has one but it gets 1mpg more than my truck- whats the point?
