On Africam--Building visible in background
I just went to Africam and saw a herd of deer-like animals grazing and in the background, a building; pretty good-size. It really ruins the illusion of jungle "wilderness". I'm so disappointed. Anybody know anything about the authenticity of this site?

1. Well, I don't watch it, but I went to the site once, and saw that the cam is provided by

a lodge, and that the lodge is within range of the camera. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. For all I know though, there are links to more than one here on DU, and we're thinking of different places.

2. But doesn't that mean...

That the animals are rather "tame"? If they're used to seeing people and they're still going to the watering hole, it seems more like the "San Diego Zoo Cam".

11. The animals are used to having people around sometimes, but still
are wild animals. Like when the lions killed a gnu a couple wks ago. Here is a link to Africamforum:

4. It's the lodge that sponsors the cam.

I don't think it makes the animals tame at all. The animals are still wild, in fact one day three lions kept all the other animals at bay while they lazily munched on a cape buffalo they'd brought down by the hole.

5. Its a game preserve. If those rangers were not there, neither would the critters
Eco-tourism is the only thing protecting those hides. Poaching is a huge, huge problem, even on the preserves.

Drought is another big problem. That watering hole is very important

9. That's disappointing.
I know that a vehicle filled with tourists goes by every once in awhile, but I had no idea the lodge was so close and tacky.
