Is anyone else creeped out by the Burger King?
I especially hate the commercial where the guy wakes up and finds the King hovering over his bed. I'm not going to eat at a place that gives me nightmares.

57. Burger King killed by homeowner
Sioux Falls, SD (AP)- The King is Dead.

The Sioux Falls Police Department is investigating the shooting death of the character "The King" from the Burger King fast-food franchise early yesterday morning. Initial reports state that The King was shot while trespassing in a home in the 3200 block of South Phillips Avenue early this morning.

According to police, Sarah Tschetter, 32, a single mother of two, awoke to find The King squatting next to her bed and staring at her at approximately six o'clock in the morning. Tschetter threw her blanket over her intruder and quickly retrieved a .357 Magnum revolver from a fast-opening gun safe. As the intruder disentagled himself from the blanket, Tschetter aimed the gun at him and demanded he freeze.

According to police, The King then reached behind his back and started to withdraw something, at which point Tschetter fired two rounds, striking The King in the chest. She then fled the bedroom and gathered up her youngest daugher. Together they proceeded to barricade themselves in the oldest daughter's room and called the police.

Patrol units and paramedics responded immediately to the 911 call. The King was pronounced dead on the scene.

The object The King was reaching for was in fact a breakfast sandwich. It was found scattered on the floor beside the body.

The Sioux Falls Police Department immediately initiated an ivestigation. When reached for comment, Minnehaha County Attorney Erik Johnson said it was too soon in the process to decided on what, if any, charges would be filed, but it appeared to be a clear-cut case of self-defense.

Tschetter has refrained from public comment and is seeking counseling for the incident, her family stated in a press release.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader contributed to this report. Copyright ©2007 by the Associated Press

9. Why don' t they just bring back the live-action Burger King from the 70's?
Back then, BK was trying to outdo McDonald's with their Mcdonaldland characters; Grimace, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese and so on. BK created a similar gang with the Burger King, the Duke Of Doubt and some others. Pretty stupid stuff, but on the whole, less creepy than the plastic Burger King.

has adopted(?) the king. Starting last season, one of the students came to the games dressed as BK and would get up and dance to start the second half of basketball games. He graduated, but other students have picked up the baton and are BK this season. They don't do the dance with the same flair as the kid from last season, but it's still pretty funny. This not withstanding, the commercial spots give me the creeps.

As creepy as the BK is, he's always doing funny or benign things, like playing football or offering people food. They even made a video game where you (as the BK) sneak up on people in scary situations (at night/jogging alone/etc.) and give them Whoppers and bacon-and-cheese biscuits.

I think the ad campaign is ingenious. It's obviously working, because people like you not only remember the ads but also the product that's being sold, and that's a tough combo to work out in the advertising world.
