OK, I'm going to start another hamburger controversy: The best burger chain.
Yes, I've eaten at Sonic, In & Out, Whataburger, Carl's Junior, and really liked every one of them.

But there's one based in Montreal, with branches all around Quebec, that puts all of them to shame.

Harvey's. Fresh ground, hand-made burgers. Each one made and topped by hand, to order, right in front of you where you can watch. Don't waste your time picking out toppings, just go "all-dressed." Trust me.

I've been PLEADING with their management for YEARS to expand into New England (because we don't have a good regional chain like Sonic), but they won't listen.

Dammit.

Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 03:19 AM by regnaD kciN
...because, back in the 1980s, Carl's Jr. was a heavy donor to right-wing causes. It's one reason why I've never eaten there, when I lived back in L.A.

Ironically, they're putting one in right down the road at a former Dairy Queen in southeast King County -- the first one I've ever seen in the Northwest. I thought they'd decided against expanding to this part of the country. Now, if we could only get Del Taco (are they still around?) to move up here as well...

the Oklahoma Onion burger style, where they mash the burger down onto a real thin slice or four of onion?

I've got 3 and a half boxes of Grillers Prime in my freezer right now and I'm getting three more tonight before the store special ends and my discount coupon is still valid.

I load the veggie burgers with onion, ketchup and relish on a wheat bun and it's great. Especially post-holidays when I'm trying to lose weight. This year it was +14 pounds.

46. Absolutely Culver's. Hot, fresh, made to order. Juicy. The lettuce stays crisp.
The pickles are what they should be. Fried onions if you want. And they lightly butter the bun and then slightly toast it. The result is a bun that is crispy yet soft.

The food of the devil is Culver's.

Absolutely the best I've ever had.

Wonderful food, excellent ice cream (or yogurt or whatever the hell it is).

Pricey for fast food, but then, it's not quite fast food, since they DO make just about everything to order, so it's fresh and hot and tasty wonderful goodness.

I just wish it were possible to eat there for less than $8.

200. Good Food and Decent Management
I point out to my Republican acquaintances who are opposed to the minimum wage that Culver's CEO Chet Culver is a longtime advocate of a higher minimum wage and that, when the new minimum wage is enacted, it will still be less than the average wage of a Culver's employee. And that "higher minimum wage stifles economic growth" argument? Culver's is one of the fastest-growing restaurant chains in the country.

I have a personal lifetime goal of eating everything on the Culver's menu -- at one sitting, if possible.

221. Near the end of my mom's life, she got a real sweettooth
probably something to do with chemo or drugs or something. She just craved ice cream. So my dad would pick her up at the nursing home every afternoon, and they'd drive a couple blocks to Culver's and have the flavor of the day--whatever it was. When I'm near a Culver's, I always stop and have the flavor of the day, in memory of my mom.

I have yet to receive what I ordered, to the point where I now sort of look forward to the surprise. It doesn't matter if I'm in the drive-thru or standing right in front of the server. I may as well be speaking Welsh.

I went there for a Six-Dollar burger a few months back and the guy handed me six of their basic hamburgers. The burgers aren't called dollar burgers, so I have no idea how he could have confused the two, particularly when he must get asked for Six-Dollar Burgers (their signature sandwich) ten thousand times a day.

My favorite, though, was asking for a burger, some of those battered chicken fragments, fries and a Coke, and I got a chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese, onion rings, a salad and a Dr. Pepper. It was late at night and there was nobody else in the place, so how the holy hell they could have got every single thing wrong is beyond me.

30. In-N-Out is the best burger chain in America! Unfortunately, I don't live
in the west - California, Nevada, Arizona are the only states where they're located. In the upper Midwest, I have to go with Steak-n-Shake, followed by Culver's. Everything else is crap!

Canadian burgers always seemed weird to me, like they were steamed or something. I grew up near the border at Niagara Falls and we used spend lots of time there...

Okay, I've added to my list of things to do before I die...

I'm becoming more discriminating in my old age. I ate at a McDonald's a few weeks back as a last resort kind of thing, and was immediately regretting my decision with the first bite... :puke:

35. It's FRESH
it hasn't been sitting under a lamp for hours.

The burgers are far better than any other chain...and instead of a couple strings of lettuce or a wilted tomato slice, all the toppings are fresh, too. Whichever toppings you want, how much you want. And their pickles...are to die for...

If you like poutine, theirs is the best you can get at a fast food restaurant.

79. Harvey's is good, but. . .
I get tired of them. The ones that are paired with Swiss Chalet are the best, you can eat off their menu without having to tip.

Peters' Drive In in Calgary is very famous, it's OK as far as I'm concerned, but I know some people who would kill for their stuff. The family sold it recently and it has hit the skids. That's corporations for you.

I'm spoiled now, though, because Fatburger has come to town. Ironflange-girl and I go there sometimes, and it really is the best ever, though Burger Inn, a local chain, is fairly close. Fatburger is consistently good, tho, BI can be spotty. Next time you're passing thru, do yourself a favor and try it. It's in Deerfoot Meadows, near Ikea, right on the road to Fernie. A bit pricey, prolly not good for my arteries, but once in a while can't hurt. . . right?

Fast food is a rare indulgence for me, which is probably why I never get tired of Harvey's. I think the last time I ate there was about a month ago, because of Christmas shopping and the rush. If I have fast food once every 6-8 weeks, that's about it.

I don't know if we have a Fatburger in Edmonton...

Buffalo Burger is a "chain" with "head office" in Wainwright, named, as many things in Wainwright are, after the fleeting presence of bison on the base in the early 1900's. That was prior to the bison's move to Elk Island National Park.

27. My favorite, honestly, is...
Krystal's. Saying this seems to cause feelings of disgust in a lot of people, but what can I say? There's just something about those soggy, onion-soaked little burgers. I like White Castle, too, though I've only had the freezer-section, microwaveable variety of theirs as the chain doesn't seem to have made it to the south. I do like Whataburger, though; they are my favorites of the fast food burgers I grew up with. (I haven't had burgers from several of the places mentioned in the thread, though, so maybe I'm just a burger-eating novice!)

47. Fair enough - I've never been there
I am usually in the middle of nowhere when I go to Canada.

The other thing about Culver's (beside never frozen meat and fresh toppings) is the frozen custard. Amazing. Real ice cream milkshakes. They have good crinkle fries (usually not my favorite but the best chain fries). Also, you can get real mashed potatoes and gravy instead of fries - beleive it or not it is the healthier alternative.

If I lived within a mile of Culver's I would weigh 400 pounds.

78. Every time I watch the Rose Parade on tv, I think of
how sore all of the marching participants' feet must be. That is one long parade route. It's no wonder the tv cameras are near the beginning of the route when everyone is still fresh. It must be hell down at the other end.

One year long ago I went to see the floats on display the day after the parade and was surprised to see that the Rose Queen and her court were sitting on the most uncomfortable looking bicycle seats. I guess it's better than massive blisters on the feet, but I would imagine they were in pain for days, too!

As for the burger chain, I agree. In N Out is delicious - and reasonably priced.

59. Tom Wahl's is the best!
It is a burger joint that started in the 50's. They make fresh, hand formed, ground steak burgers grilled to perfection. Their famous burger is called the "Wahlburger". Maybe Barenakedlady or morningglow have been...if they have, they will vouch for me. It is a local phenomenon with maybe three or four outlets outside of the original diner. The atmosphere is retro and besides the best hamburgers in the world they make their own root beer served in a frosted mug. It is a gem that you will only find a little south of Rochester, NY. If anyone gets out this way, go. You won't be disappointed.

66. I'll stick with the Whopper
I grew up in Miami, home of Burger King, and still nothing tops them. I've tried everything listed in this thread so far but give me a basic Whopper and you guys can have the fancy crap. I love thin burgers, no threat of juice ruining the experience.

Plus, Burger King in 30+ years has never screwed up and put cheese on my burgers. That alone is priority one in my book, trumping everything else. I despise hideous cheese. Wendy's, as I've mentioned many times in this forum, is the alltime lowlife in terms of ruining my burgers with despicable cheese, no matter how I try to prevent it. I had another episode in December. Unbelievable. They seem to think it's a bonus if you scream no cheese but they slap it on anyway.

Tommy's was a post-midnight highlight in college in LA, two double burgers and leaning on the wall of the building at Beverly and Rampart. I could go for that right now. Lately I've stopped a few times at Tommys in Barstow on the way back to Las Vegas.

But as someone already mentioned, be ready for a system-shock if you eat at Tommys. That chili taste will overwhelm everything else in your stomach or taste buds for about four days.

191. Update: Burgerville to use cage-free egg products
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/metro_north_news/116900610958400.xml&coll=7

"While many grocery stores and food service providers are acknowledging the inherent cruelty in a caged egg product," said Paul Shapiro, the humane society's factory farming campaign director, "Burgerville is the first fast-food restaurant to take this step."

Burgerville will purchase about 600,000 eggs a year from Stiebrs Farms of Yelm, Wash. Previously, the chain bought its eggs through Sysco Corp., which received its eggs from a variety of producers.

Burgerville expects to pay slightly more for its cage-free eggs. The increase likely will be tacked onto the cost of breakfast biscuits, bagels and platters when the chain does its annual price review.

Although they don't expect customers to notice a change in flavor, company officials already have gotten a taste of customer reaction. About 300 Portland-area residents, tipped off to Burgerville's move by the national humane society, sent e-mails over the weekend praising the move.

Burgerville customers get partial credit for guiding the 39-restaurant chain to Tuesday's decision, said Tara Wefers, a company spokeswoman.

Burgerville has carved a niche in the sustainable food practices world, choosing not only ingredients produced by area suppliers but also those made with a dash of ethos. For example, the chain buys its free-range beef from Oregon Country Beef, and its free-range turkey meat from Diestel Family Turkey Ranch in Sonora, Calif.

195. Burgerville, you beat me to it
Today I read in the newspaper that Burgerville is canceling the use of eggs from caged chickens and will use only "free-range" eggs in its products. That's pretty amazing.

And they use Tillamook cheese. And they serve seasonal items like sweet onion rings and fresh strawberry shakes, and sweet potato fries too.

76. Do not, by any means, forget Dairy Queen
Another Minnesota-based chain, but it has a special place in the hearts of Texans everywhere. You must try their burgers, especially with one of their shakes. Mmmmmmmm.

And if you eat at the DQ in Dublin, TX, they will serve you your meal on china. Complete with actual silverware instead of that plastic stuff. And you can get your Dr. Pepper made with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar instead of that corn syrup everyone else uses.

There's one in my hometown but the nearest one to where I'm at now is about 3 hours north...and that's a long way to go even for Braum's ice cream.

The good news is that 3 of my agency's institutions are in cities with a Braum's in them...so I get them sometimes when I travel for work. And my parents and oldest nephew always take me to the one back home when I visit. :)

It's mainly the memory of sitting up all night doing a little wiretapping and having Sergeant Smith come back with bags and bags of those little gut bombs...but I think they taste pretty good.

Now! If you're in Raleigh, NC, there's a place called Char-Grill. As I remember, Char-Grill makes these oblong burgers served on hoagie rolls. And there's no seating and no counter staff to speak of. You take a slip, fill out what you want on it, give them the slip and your money, and eventually your food shows up.

They are on just about every street corner in my hometown, and nothing beats a Number 2, cheese tots, and a Route 44 cherry vanilla diet coke. I moved to Columbus, where they have plenty of Sonic commercials that tell me all about their tasty treats with no Sonic for over 100 miles. It's evil and wrong, but if I'm near a Sonic I'm stopping for a Route 44 at least.

I think they make a darn fine fast food burger. Made when you order it, not a second sooner. It's a little trying when it's 2am and you want something to soak up the booze, but it's a good burger.

Culver's is good, but the one here doesn't melt their cheese enough. Their crinkle fries are very good though.

Sonic is a good choice. The burgers are good, but the tater tots rock!

For a local joint, it's Hut's all the way.

It's damn good. Could be iguana meat for all I care.

The one in up here in Madison closed after a year or two.

I've never tried one, curious about it. Went inside one once, but I wasn't aware it was a waited-on place and I wasn't in the mood at that time. Closest I've been to trying them.

Beautiful cheeseburgers--they FRY the cheese so you have a place to put your ketchup, mustard, relish & onions. The cheese forms a golden crown on the outside of the bun. Add their onion rings or cole slaw & homemade ice cream for dessert & you've got nirvana on a plate.

206. Char-Grill in Raleigh, NC
Absolutely fantastic. A poster upthread described it well; you fill out an order form and drop it in a slot. The place is basically a kitchen surrounded by glass. The health ratings in them are always insanely high. The burgers are char-grilled (surprise, surprise) and can be served on a small hoagie roll (the Steak Junior) or a large round roll (steak sandwich). Can't get any fresher. Big thick fries, while not usually my favorite style, are incredibly tasty.

Their web site says "no visit to Raleigh is complete without a visit", and hundreds of thousands of locals would heartily agree--they win "best burger in the Triangle" year in and year out, for good reason.

http://chargrill-nc.com

That's it--I'm asking my wife to go by there when she runs errands here in a little while.

Another second for Five Guys, which arrived in Raleigh about a year ago--and there was much rejoicing. We also recently got a Steak and Shake to open; haven't tried them yet. Cheeburger Cheeburger is also fairly decent.

I would LOVE to try an In 'n Out one day!! If I ever make it to the west coast, that's destination number one, without a doubt.

225. Kidd Valley in Seattle...
Burgers made the way I remember them as a kid in L.A., before everything became a corporate-owned chain. Combine them with batter-fried mushrooms (which only sound weird as a fries alternative until you try one) and a mocha shake (hey, what do you expect -- it's Seattle!) and you've got a experience of what "fast food" used to be like in America's glory days. ;-)

Fatburger comes in a close second.

Red Robin is pretty good, but I don't think a hamburger, to be true to its nature, should cost as much as a full meal in a "standard" non-budget restaurant.

251. I'll say Runza, too, since nobody has mentioned them yet
They aren't primarily a burger joint--the main thing on their menu is the runza, which is ground beef, cabbage, onions, and seasonings cooked inside bread--but they have several burgers on their menu. I haven't eaten there in several years, but they certainly used to make some of the best burgers around. You can find them all over Nebraska, but they also have a few in Iowa and Colorado, and maybe some other states nearby ...

255. Harvey's History ..... Ontario based
http://www.harveys.ca/eng/index.php

Harvey's and Swiss Chalet Chicken .. yummmmmmy.

History

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey's_(restaurant_chain)

Harvey's was founded by Richard Mauran in 1959 with its first location on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, Ontario. In the next few years it began franchising restaurants throughout southern Ontario, later expanding throughout Canada. The first franchised location was at 238 Bloor Street West in Toronto, which remained there until early 2006, when a new condo project, the Bedford needed its site. Harvey's introduced an interesting concept, in which customers could customize their burgers with a wide array of toppings, organized much like a salad bar. This was later discontinued due to overuse of certain toppings. In the early days Harvey's had a wider selection of toppings than it does now.

Many names were considered by Mauran who was looking for a simple name. "Humphrey's" was one contender. While reading the Toronto Telegram on July 11, 1959 under the heading "Bargains at 2300 Danforth" Mauran found the name "Harvey's" - an auto dealer near Danforth and Woodbine, in East Toronto. The current best selling restaurant is located in Port Colborne, Ontario.

In mid-December of 2006 the Harvey's location in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario caught fire, there was extensive damage to the inside of the building.
