Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 06:33 PM by xultar
he got stuck in the neighbors doggie door. That cat was way to fat to hunt birds.

He has FIV, which has nothing to do with AIDS.

7. I have no problem relaxing.
I'm having a cocktail while dinner is cooking.

And those who call FIV "feline AIDS" are horribly misguided. If you'd like me to define AIDS for you, I will.

10. I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm a HIV health educator for a non-profit agency. 25 years after the first reported case of HIV, people still don't know the difference. Just offering some friendly education because there's a big difference. Your thread title is misleading, so I thought I'd help out.

15. It's the lounge. My friends who have and had the disease had a sense of humor
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 07:03 PM by xultar
about life still. Why can't I? Why can't we? Some of the best time I had dealing with my friends situation is when we sat around and LAUGHED about the whole thing. Must we always be so serious? Laughter is good medicine too.

Furthermore once people start making things a part of their everyday life they accept the fact that it is a part of society and not something that ...THOSE PEOPLE HAVE... AIDS is a part of our lives it is a part of our every day lives it is a part of our communities and I treat it as such. I joke about a lot of shit because I used to be a stand up comedian. Joking about the tough stuff helps people to deal.

I can see if I posted it in the GBLT or a Medical forum but I didn't. It's the lounge for gebus sakes.

28. Now I know where you were coming from.
I didn't at first, so instead of jumping on my ass and telling me not to respond to any of your posts, this post would have been a lot more productive.

You are very fortunate to have experienced those moments with your friends. Hopefully, over time, you will get to know me a little better and you'll see what type of humor I have as well (hint: I miss "Strangers With Candy". A lot.). I just saw the title and it just didn't sit right with me. So I responded, and not in a malicious or indignant way.

I hope we have a better understanding of where each of us is coming from.

:pals:

30. I got angry. Why do people have to be so serious 24/7. Why can't we just
have a bit of fun. It seems that people's first instinct is to jump all over stuff and put the buzz kill on it.

I don't get it. Even in places where we are supposed to be relaxed and have fun people get so effin serious.

9. I completely understand your taking offense.
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 06:44 PM by PelosiFan
The subject was sensational. No veterinarian would diagnose a cat with AIDS. They would diagnose him with FIV. Not HIV, not AIDS, maaaaaybe Feline Aids in a colloguial way, but NEVER AIDS.

Having AIDS in the title of this thread is terribly misleading as to the subject. I never would have guessed that Hercules was a cat. I was imagining that this may be some homophobic right-wing email someone received, about some guy named Hercules who had AIDS.

I'd be very surprised if he thought it wasn't going to stir up some flames.

I was just supporting someone who was offended by your title. I don't care if we're in the Lounge or GD, or Timbuktu, I would respond the same way.

I do apologize for assuming that your were intentional causing trouble. I haven't been here long and I don't know you, and I have a habit of assuming the worst. Anyway, my apologies for that.

13. Exactly what I just said. "Feline AIDS" not just "AIDS"
There is a huge difference in these titles:

"Hercules has AIDS people...he'll be fine though"

"Hercules has Feline AIDS people...he'll be fine though"

or even:

"My cat Hercules has AIDS people...he'll be fine though"

Maybe it wasn't intentional, probably not, but I understand someone being offended by it. Cats don't get AIDS. They get "Feline AIDS" or FIV. And there is a big difference.

" What is FIV and how is it transmitted?

FIV (Feline Immumodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus in the same family as the human AIDS virus, with a few significant differences. It is estimated that in the United States, 2% of cats are infected with the FIV virus. Saliva to blood (biting) is generally accepted as the primary source of spreading the virus, and it is unlikely (but not impossible) that cats will spread FIV by drinking or eating out of the same food dish, or by mutual grooming. It is not surprising that outdoor cats are particularly susceptible to the virus, and the best way to prevent infection with FIV virus is to ensure that your cat stays indoors only, which eliminates the possibility of contact with FIV cats. Another, less common means of transmission is from the mother cat (Queen) to her kittens during gestation, during birth, or by nursing. There is comfort in the fact that not all FIV queens pass the virus on to their kittens. This phenomenon is not fully understood, but all kittens from FIV mothers should be tested for the FIV antibodies after six months. "

29. I wasn't offended. I was just understanding someone else's offense.
I do understand someone taking offense, but obviously this has turned into much more than it should have. I can imagine myself having made such a mistake, with no intention at hurting anyone, but when someone responded that it offended them and explained why, I would probably have realized that I made a mistake instead of immediately responding on the defensive.

Anyway, I guess I entered the wrong fray. I do know that you didn't mean any offense. :hi:
