What was your first pet?
I was three or four when I got a duckling for Easter.

It was named Donald.

We ate it the following Christmas.

I wish it hadn't had a name.

1. A springer spaniel named Boomer.
He was hit and killed by a car the night that the final "Lavern & Shirley" was aired.

2. A stray dog...
She followed my mom and I home from the grocery store when I was a toddler. Mom said she was talking with someone, and turned around to find me petting this stray dog. She was in bad shape...thin, feet cut up, fur matted. After she followed us home, we gave her some kitchen scraps to eat and took her to a vet. He said she looked like a sheltie mix. I think she may have had some papillon in her.

She was a great dog...with us for 10 years. RIP Terry...

3. I guess a mail order turtle was my first 'pet'.
It was about as big as a silver dollar.
It got lost.
Several months later I found his mummified body under the radiator.
:-(

4. Gerbils - they had babies
then they ate the babies

then they escaped in the basement

then they couldn't be found

until Mom moved the washing machine

and we found them dead from starvation

ah, sweet childhood memories

5. A German Shepard named JoJo.
That my dad had to put to sleep because our parents couldn't be bothered to train the dog and they never took him out for runs.

He took every chance to slip outside and run rampant all over the place, causing the occasional traffic accident and once bit someone.

You can't raise a dog by ignoring him. A dog needs to be outside more than just to go to the bathroom and come back inside. Dogs don't learn by telepathy.

It's a sore point with me. It was the first time I ever realized that my parents were irresponsible. :(

6. BIG Great Dane named Ben
He'd been with my family for a few years before I was born. Massive, massive example of the breed. Back in those days, the crib bars were fairly far apart. My mom tells me that he couldn't get enough sniffing of me. He'd stick most of that monstrous snout through the bars.

My big protector, he was. Damn good dog.

10. a part Siamese cat from a neighborhood litter
named Crackers. Poisoned by other neighbors when I was still small. My parents didn't understand the concept of a "house cat". Crackers was buried between the lilac bushes out in back by the monkey bars.

13. A puppy named...Puppy
we got him as a pup, and he wasn't supposed to grow much, but of course he became HUGE, much too big for our yard.

He loved to jump up and grab my tuque off my head and run into the cedar trees with it. Being still quite young, it terrified me.

My brother used to put on his 'mini-skis' and hadPuppy drag him around the neighbourhood in the winter.

I was about 5 when we gave him away to a farm couple. She wore a headscarf and I thought we were giving him to the gypsies. :silly:

14. A beagle named Rascal
Very head-strong dog. I can remember my Father calling him; Rascal would look back, put his nose in the air and trot off in another direction. We had him for about 3 years. He died after eating "poison peanuts" a neighbor had put out to kill moles.

23. Bob, a rabbit who lived to be about ten.
He found his way to our family back when I was a baby, so I can't remember not having him around until I was almost a teenager. I still miss him.
