What I like about the new season of 24....
is that the guy who plays a nerdy mathematician on Numbers is a Constitution-trashing, blood n' guts adviser to the President and also, the kid who played Kumar in "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" is a terrorist who shot his neighbor and held his other neighbors hostage by gunpoint. Good times. :)

1. Yeah, and the constitution trashing adviser
was also that stuttering partner in "Ally McBeal". And (I believe) that the mother, whose family was being held hostage, was one of the hookers on "Deadwood".

2. LOL Kumar the terrorist
You keep thinking he's goin to ask the neighbors to get some whitecastle for him or something....

"Get me those burgers or else..."

All in all, an interesting start for the season, but not as good, but didn't compare in any way with season 5's two night premiere. I wish they had done more with the Chinese, but maybe they're saving that for later this season.

But I'm looking forward to this season just to see Jack take on the bluetooth gang, namely that guy Graham.

20. It's the mirror image of the season 5 premier. Everything happened in th
last five minutes instead of the first five minutes. WOW.

On Numb3rs, Peter MacNicol plays a physics professor specializing in cosmology.

Great cast on that show.

Yeah I wasn't sure exactly what it was, I just started watching it a few months ago.

Oh yeah, love the cast. On both shows actually.

7. Wetzelbill, did you know that 24 is right wing propaganda?!
Edited on Mon Jan-15-07 10:34 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
GD is freaking out tonight about it. Apparently we're not allowed to like it because Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh like it too.

10. LOL...
I don't actually think it's propaganda. And you're right...it is like crack. Kiefer Sutherland is the man. I am not usually attracted to smokers in an "I want to jump their bones" kind of way, but oh my god. I'd love to jump his bones.

He has...something...

15. I like your post on that one thread
People just see what they want to see in these shows, because they are made for the masses. If you want you can see a RW fantasy or you can identify with things like the Prez's sister fighting for civil liberties. Some people always have to think everything is some kind of conspiracy. :)

But Kiefer is a good looking guy, with that bad boy thing going on, so I see how the girls dig him. I say that as a man with an unblemished record of heterosexuality too. :) I sometimes smoke to look tough. Like Clinton though, I do not inhale. :)

13. If you really take a look at the characters
Edited on Mon Jan-15-07 11:14 PM by GenDem
The lefties are the good guys. The president is pragmatic and is a minority, his adviser Karen Hayes (that's awfully close to Karen Hughes) is also pragmatic. The presidents sister is fighting for the constitution. On the other side -- Thomas Lennox is taking the role as the antagonist of the administration. He is portrayed as the constitution ripping, xenophobic, neo-con.

The right wing probably loves it, because they think that it's reality. I enjoy it because it's over the top, action packed fantasy.

22. I agree. Peter McNichol's character comes off like a fucking asshole and he's the
most RW of the bunch. The President's leftie sister comes off looking like a strong, heroic woman. So to me it's kinda surprising the RW are eating this up.

17. it does its job...
of exposing us to a growing police state. It shows torture for the good of the country, and this season is supposed to show concentration camps in the US. It comes from Faux broadcasting so I take it to be thinly veiled propagada meant to expose us to the coming reality so that we will not freak out when we hear about camps opening up. We will then assume that good ole Jack is simply sending the hundreds of brown skinned Al-Kada and the other moslim terrists to camps in order to save Amorika from the godless heathens.

It's all to desensitize us to see that the chimp is fighting an enemy that is on tv, so they must be real.

18. yeah but it doesn't show that stuff in a good light
The heroes aren't the ones trying to put people in concentration camps or anything like that. Usually the biggest rats who end up getting their comeuppance do that shit. Last year the president who was trying to start a preemptive strike on a Muslim country so he could fan out into a broader war on terror was disgraced and booted out of office. The Black Dem president was always shown as the strong leader too. Lots of stuff like that. So I think you're way off base.

24. I agree, Wetzelbill
I wandered over to GD last night and found it pretty hostile.:scared: This morning I can't even find the thread. Could it have been locked?

I have only seen seasons 1, 2, and am now in about the 5th hour of 3. In the 2 1/2 seasons that I've watched -- the bad guys have always been portrayed as the righties. If anything it gives a look, albeit fictional, into the danger of hegemony and the saber rattling that leads to policy makers rushing to judgment. Sound familiar?

Seeing internment camps in the current season doesn't put complacency in my psyche. No, on the contrary, it shows me that we have to do everything we can to keep these xenophobe, racist, neo-cons out of public policy positions so that we never get to that point. I'm loving the side story with the presidents sister. Maybe the righties view it differently when they watch.

And what always has to be kept in mind is -- it is a work of fiction. Just entertainment. When I see people on GD writing phrases like - "don't watch it" -- that bothers me. Maybe because I don't like to be told what to do, what to watch, or what to say - by anyone. I guess these same people could be easily saying don't read books like -- "The Handmaids Tale" or "1984". These books show a more clear cut danger of conservatives running amok than "24" does...but still. saying not to watch something is condoning a kind of censorship, isn't it?

Why do I watch it? It's entertaining. For an hour you can sit on the edge of your seat and try to guess who the bad guy at CTU is going to be, watch Jack wiggle his way out of countless predicaments, and watch all of the minor characters interacting.

25. It also reminds me of those fundies who boycott films without even knowing
anything about it. They just hear that Jesus was portrayed by a man who was 34 instead of 33 or had blue eyes instead of brown and call it heresy.

23. Oh good lord. Sometimes entertainment is just entertainment. But for what it's
worth the last response is correct. Dem/Lefties are often the good guys and the neo-cons are often the total asswipes. I find myself wondering why RWers like it so much, but figure they're just too stoopid to see past the explosions and gunplay.
