20. Trying to read Dylan is risky, but....
it just occurs to me that the way he looks at someone off to his right with that grin, is he dissing Donovan here? There's definitely something more going on, and the lyrics of the song would fit, as well.

I'm thinking maybe before Donovan showed up, Dylan was saying to whoever he's grinning at in this scene, something like... "Do I really have to spend time with this guy Donovan? Who is he anyway?"

23. In the film, Donovan had just sung a relatively wanky composition
of his own to the folks in Dylan's hotel suite. Dylan is most definitely dissing Donovan by following up with a couple verses from "Baby Blue."

If you haven't seen it yet, please rent or buy DA Pennebaker's documentary "Don't Look Back." You of all people, with your Dylan roots, should see it. It's fantastic.

25. Yeah, I gotta own it, much less see it.
I've seen a lot of clips from it and I know Dylan doesn't like it at all.

I also saw a hilarious out take from it, with Dylan playing word games with some street signs in London. It's in this exhibit that's traveling around the country:

http://www.weisman.umn.edu/exhibits/upcoming.html

I recommend it highly. I think it will be in Los Angeles later in early 2008. Here's more info...

http://www.emplive.org/exhibits/index.asp?categoryID=21&ccID=83

Have you been to EMP in Seattle? I'm thinking of visiting when I come out to Portland.

I wish there were a video for "Nietzsche" from the same album:

not play dead

I guess they had to repent for that Jesus song from "Come Down."

and their version of AC/DC's Hell's Bell's is also Burt bacharac-esque. Swag, you NAILED it with that comparison. i couldnt "pinpoint" that sound and you did.

the dandy's are my quilty pleasure band. i saw them for the first time in november of 2005 at webster hall in nyc. it was memorable for me tho most people I know scratch their heads in confustion because i like them. they satisfy the sugary psuedo psychodelic naval gazer pop thing i have. i like brian jonestown massacre also...besides those two bands i pretty much like more brutal stuff.

I also saw the Wolstoncroft/Burns dual drummer line-up, albeit 12 years later in Portland, Oregon.

I had telephone-interviewed Brix for an article for a terrible now-thankfully-defunct local music rag (but I got the cover story!), Brix who had rejoined the band for a brief stint for the tour of Middle Class Revolt and the recording of Cerebral Caustic, and was happy to finally see one of my favorite bands. The evening they played Portland was the autumnal equinox of that year. Their set began on the very minute that the fall began on the west coast that year.

Funny now watching that "Telephone Thing" video. I could swear that the blonde in it is Brix, even though she was famously out of the band then.

I met her when she was doing The Adult Net and was floored by her, she was so devastating.

The Fall were great that night; they played in The Pop Shop, which was a "college rock" basement club underneath The Agora. Mark talked a little about Pere Ubu and how much he liked how bleak Cleveland looked; that got a knowing laugh from the crowd..

65. Wow, that Hazel video takes me back to my first years in Portland.
I was walking downtown one day and came across Hazel on the back of a flatbed truck in the middle of 14th Ave playing a benefit show for "Outside/In" which aids all the homeless kids here. Good show.

Don't know what Brady the bassist is up to, but I saw Fred (the dancer) at the Team Dresch reunion show (where Jodi was really rocking hard on the bass and guitar.

And I accidentally saw Pete, the guitarist, at one of the first shows of the Stolen Sweets at a wine shop a few blocks down the road. They play Django Reinhart style jazz, really great stuff. The place was so crowded, I was forced to stand practically right next to Pete's music stand, two feet away from the whole band. Great musicians, all of 'em.

Thanks for posting that.

They were one of the bands I saw a lot in my first Portland years, as well (I was there from '93 to '99). Those were great times for PDX music. Fred was crazy fun on stage. Did you ever see Hitting Birth? That's another band I recall fondly from those days, along with The Spinanes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIodcvaclvg).

73. Golly, you were prime time.
Never saw Hitting Birth, but remember them being prominent and ubiquitous. I have some spectacular minutes of them on video somewhere.

I met Rebecca Gates briefly at a friend's art opening, and had reviewed the Spinanes 45 "Halloween Candy" for some local publication, and I don't know if that factored into it but she Rebecca very friendly. Never met Scott Plough, the drummer.

In my early 30s, I wasn't into going out much since I had gone out to see bands so much before. Little did I know that when I hit my late 30s and early-mid 40s, I would be again going out all the time to see musical performances.

Do you remember the noise artist Daniel Menche, who was also active back then? I'm going to see him two Sundays from now at a close-in East Burnside place called Doug Fir.

61. "Billy, Milley and the Rock Camp" by Music Mania
Edited on Sat Jan-13-07 06:36 PM by swag
Crappy video (I shot it from the balcony), but the song is so great that it doesn't matter. If you want a good video of this performance, by the way, you can order the 2006 Session 2 DVD/CD set from http://www.girlsrockcamp.org/ , a great non-profit to support.

8 and 9 year old members of Music Mania perform a very Velvet Undergroundish original composition at the 08/12/2006 showcase of the Rock & Roll Camp for Girls, Bagdad Theater, Portland, OR.

Amelia Wall Babson - keys
Caitlin Gast - vocals
