I'm brand new here. Please help out a newbie?
I have been lurking on this board for a while and wanted to join a while ago, but I had this hairbrained idea that I could wait a little and become the 100,000th DUer. Obviously, it did not work out, but I was not far off. If not for a staff meeting today, I might have pulled it off :)

Anyway, I wanted to ask if there is a thread for newbies to understand some of the inside jokes. I have noticed that on some of the polls here there are certain themes which appear more often than I see them having a reason to, such as references to Olive Garden. Are there any pieces of advice, tidbits, trivia or other things about DU that you might give friends or family who just joined DU that you could send my way?

Many thanks in advance for any answers, and for those of you who have a long weekend (I'm not one of you) I wish you a happy one!

Eric

You didn't join DU just for the sparkling conversation, did you? GD is the heart of this site. Don't be afraid of it; just don't start any flame wars, and you'll be fine.

122. Above and beyond that, GD P is slower and a tad more thoughtful, I think.
My longer posts have been well-recieved in GD P. I tend to post my presidential primary stuff there exclusively, current events in GD. :hi: welcome to DU!

2. Welcome to DU!
Sorry I don't know of a specific thread to point you toward...but I'll tell you the basics of The Olive Garden. It all started when a DUer recommended Olive Garden as an economical place to eat in New York. A flamewar ensued. This, is..of course...a very abbreviated version.

Don't worry, you'll pick up on the inside jokes pretty quickly! :hi:

5. Welcome to the strange and wonderful DU Lounge
Where we can burst in to flamewars over the most inane topics. Olive Garden was an epic flamewar, in which someone posted asking for suggestions of places to eat in Manhattan, another member posted that she enjoyed eating at the Olive Garden in Times Square and various and sundry members piled on the person who posted about Olive Garden, telling her, in essence, how uncouth it was for her to eat at Olive Garden in New York.

7. Thank you, KitchenWitch :)
I wouldn't advise Olive Garden to anyone either, but to each his or her own. Are there similar stories about flamewars that have become legend here?

Many thanks for the answer and the welcome :hi:

10. Here are some past epic flamewar topics (from both the Lounge and GD)
Circumcision
Public Breast Feeding
Corn Flake Crusted Fried Chicken
Kirstie Alley/Fat Actress
Smoking (for the Love of Chrysler - Do NOT start a smoking thread)
Veal
Walmart and shopping at Walmart
People who bring their children to restaurants (or just out in public).

Those are all I can think of at the moment!

This is exactly what I'm looking for! Olive Garden has been explained, I can guess the gist of Walmart threads, and the rest I should be able to pick up now that I know what I'm looking for!

(I don't understand the corn flake thing at all, but with luck it will be brought up again)

I owe you one for this, thanks a millon! :)

16. Thank you, CaliforniaPeggy!
I appreciate the advice. This certainly seems like the best place to post until I feel like I have the feel of the board as a whole. Given some of the knockdown drag-outs my friends (Democrat) and I bhave on Democrat issues, I wouldn't want to be the jerk with 15-20 posts storming into the gauntlet and irritating half the board with my opinions.

Whereabouts in California?

108. Hey, thanks! I'd been looking for that.
Wanted to refer some others to it, but wasn't sure where to find it.

And Q32 - WELCOME TO DU! Hey, that rhymes! You soon may want to venture over to GD and GD-P anyway, just to savor the open combat :D but the General Discussion forum moves rawther quickly. Something may have sunk out of sight before you can get back to it. If so, you can always bookmark it - the little notations (or whatever) at the upper left corner of the top of the thread - along with "email this to a friend" and a third one. That has enabled me to find a thread I wanted to go back and review, or retrieve some information, that saved me a LOT of time. I've learned TONS here. And made some great friends. You will, too.

98. My brother and I preferred aviation...
...specifically, attaching bottle rockets to those cedar wood gliders (the ones with rubber band-driven propellers worked best)and watching them blow up into pieces. They were nineteen cents apiece back then, and bottle rockets were somewhere around seven bucks for a box of a hundred. Nowadays, do that and the cops come. I do miss my youth.

If someone posts: "My dog just farted and scared himself," then start a new thread with something dumb like, "My dog just started to bare himself." This is always more effective if you include an illustration, like this one of a dog baring his fangs:

116. "Cowbell" refers to a comedy sketch......
done on Saturday Night Live a few years back. I cannot explain it's popularity, but it has become famous on the internet. It portrays Christopher Walken as an infamous record producer, cutting a record with the 70's rock band Blue Oyster Cult, doing a song named Don't Fear the Reaper, which features a cowbell being played throughout.

Here's the video clip, if you're interested: http://tinyurl.com/y923ne

121. Welcome to DU
How did you find DU? Just curious because I found this site through a freeper website which I came upon by accident. I was looking for a good democratic forum, was unable to find it via google for some reason. Was stuck at Freeper's forum for a while which really turned my stomach, but at least I picked up what was going on until someone called "DU Soldier" came and posted something great which I fully agreed with to my delight, but when I was about to reply to his post to praise him I found him banned. The rest of freepers' posts to that DU soldier were vicious, but one of them mentioned www.democraticunderground.com I went there and found this place. Finally!!! So here I am. :hi: even though I've been here for 2 years, I read more than I post.

Naturally, it grabbed my interest. If he has a problem with the site, I should check it out! :)

Thank you for the welcome! :hi:

140. Two very important things
1. If you don't have a cat, get one, and post as many pics of it (them) as possible.

2. Do not ask A-Schwartzenegger about Oscar.

I'm kidding on the last part. If you like to have fun and have a sense of humor you'll have a blast. Be careful, though, cause the Lounge can verge on being like a crack addiction.

Cheers to many years of fun.

153. Welcome aboard, Q32!
one of the most important lessons I have learned about the lounge is that you can't make any assumptions about what will captivate its collective attention. NOTHING is predictable.

For example, I have seen really well-written threads that raise deep issues and heartfelt emotions sink like a stone and other times they stay kicked. It just depends on the timing and the general "mood" of the moment.

On the other hand, incredibly silly threads having to do with what everyone had for lunch can be kicked and flaming for hours. It's funny.

Bottom line, prepare to be endlessly amused and delighted by the sharp wits and quick minds of your fellow loungers. Yes, we're a happy bunch. :grouphug: ...and we're glad to have another join our crazy group!

:hi:

that it has been overtold and people are either tired of hearing about it or wonder why it's told here when everyone knows it?

Thank you for the welcome and the link! This is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to get when I put up the thread :)

180. Loving the Carpenters is considered very cool, Laura Branigan, OTOH,
is questionable--and the source of a legendary flame war.

If you see one of the flamewars, just enjoy it while it's there; they are the source of much amusement and not worth valuable viewing time to post in. The DU Lounge mods are extraordinarily fast, so read them while you can. Later, you too can participate in such reminisces!

Welcome to DU, and thanks for the walk down DU Lounge Lizard Memory Lane! Very enjoyable. :toast:

185. Welcome to DU Q32

I check into the Lounge every now and then when I need a good laugh. You cannot be in the Lounge and not get cheered up.

Lounge Application questions:

Do you mind being called a Lounge Lizard?

What's your favorite adult beverage?

Does it bother you if a poster capitaLizes aLL their "L's"?

Can you switch immediately from snarky copycat mode to nurturing comrade mode? And then back again?

Do you like Toby Keith? The Clash? Leonard Cohen?

What are you wearing?

;)
