Very Fat Cat Gets Stuck In Doggie Door

POSTED: 10:31 am EST January 11, 2007
UPDATED: 3:04 pm EST January 11, 2007

The Oregon Humane Society recovered a 20.2-pound stray cat that was found halfway stuck in a doggie door Wednesday in Gresham, Ore.

The Humane Society said the cat was trying to steal food from a home that had put out food for its own cats.

"I heard quite a ruckus when I went into my garage," said Jadwiga Drozdek, who cares for six cats at her Gresham home. "It was hilarious to see this big cat struggling to get in. I helped him out of the door and gave him a plate of food on the patio."

The cat was described as "unusually large" by the Humane Society and was nicknamed "Goliath."

The Humane Society had planned to put the cat up for adoption, but a neighbor of the owner who saw the report on TV has claimed the cat and said he had been missing for six months. The neighbor was to pick up the cat on Thursday.

"He will sure warm your lap this winter," said Sharon Harmon, OHS executive director, when she thought he was going to be put up for adoption. "People with a king-size bed would be a good fit for this cat."

3. He HAS to be bigger than 20lbs!
May cat weighs over 20 and the cat in that pic looks about twice his size!
Very cute though!

4. I thought the same thing. I have a 18lb cat and another who is growing
(both of them are large males - semi heavy, but just really REALLY large framed - like they can reach the kitchen counter just by stretching on 2 legs...) and they are nowhere near as big as that one!

Or maybe the woman holding it is really small?

27. 'zackly what I was thinking!
:wow:
One of my owners kitties is a 15 pounder...
and she's a pretty big girl. He's more than TWICE her size!

Wonder what his breed is...some Maine Coon in there I'd bet...

48. HAHAHAHAHAH he is a great cat, adopted last year, 10 years old
His owner passed away. He bounced around shelters and foster homes till I found him (I did a thread in the pets forum on him).

He is one of the smartest and most vocal cats I have ever shared my home with, and he sits next to me on his part of the desk every day.

5. The HEAD on that cat...
is GINOROUS! :wow:

I have never seen anything like it! I have had two 20 pound cats and this guy looks much bigger than they every did. At first I was wondering just how a cat could get stuck in a dog door -- even a small one - but now I know.

Jeez, so much for the stereotypical skinny stray. Poor guy. I'm glad he does have a home, but I wish the owners would get his weight under control a bit.

He's adorable. :loveya:

23. They did find his owner.
His owner was away getting a lung transplant, and the house sitter apparently lost the cat. His real name is Hercules.

The humane society noted today that the cat does have FIV.

37. I have a friend who has FIV cats. One just died at about 19 years old
Her others have all lived long lives.

They can live a long life if the owner takes good enough care of them and the vet is careful.
