High Paid Athlete Haters Perpare to Puke
For any of the people who hate athletes who get played mega millions prepare to be pissed off. The L.A. Galaxy has agreed to pay soccer star David Beckham $250 million for five years. That works out to $50 million a year.

1. And that is why I don't ever watch pro sports.
The fact that these people get paid assloads of mony for a few hours for a game makes me livid. No one's athletic talent should ever be heralded to that extent. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you this has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time.

3. I don't care for the high salaries they get, BUT it's more than a full time job
for most athletes. Natural talent aside, training, practice, travel, etc. Suggesting that they get paid "for a few hours for a game" is like saying teachers shouldn't earn more because they "only work 9 months" each year.

I don't like pro sports, and I think the money they get is shameful (though many athletes do wonderful things with some of their money).

7. I understand what you are saying, but the money
really does only boil down to game time performance. Otherwise, the 3rd string benchwarmer would make the same as the starter.

The teacher argument is not comparable really. Teachers should get paid for educating children. I don't think there is anyone who will argue that a teacher gets paid too much. Athletes, on the other hand.

8. I agree completely.
My point was just that athletes "work" more than 4 hours for a game, just like teachers work more hours than just those between first and last bell.

I've always said that we should pay our teachers like our athletes, and build our schools like our stadiums.

2. Isn't that bigger than all of US Soccer's budget?
Where the hell does Galaxy get that kind of cash? Jesus, you'd think the Red Sox were signing him or something.

5. That's what I'm wondering
I mean, we're not talking about the Yankees here.

What kind of operating budget does a MLS team have anyway?

4. That's why I prefer college sports.
They're still assholes (for the most part), but they're not billion dollar assholes (not yet, anyway.)

9. The Galaxy are only paying him 3 million per year for 5 years...
...which is a bargain. His money will be made from marketing. I read somewhere here in Spain that since Becks has been with Real Madrid, they've made something like 300+ million euros just from the rights to his image. You can imagine that a player of his caliber would like to get some of that back, and he should do just fine in the States. In fact, I think more of the bigger stars, once they see the money he's making here in the States, will probably want to test the waters for themselves- which is a very good thing for MLS. They get good players, still in the prime of their careers, and don't have to break the bank to get them. If you think this is big, just wait until Ronaldinho leaves Barcelona and joins New York. THAT will be huge.
